Where It's From

Appellation / Cotes du Rhone

View more wines from Cotes du Rhone

Cotes du Rhone is the official name of the Rhone Valley. If you see it on a bottle of wine, that typically means it comes from the southern half of the Rhone Valley (since most Northern Rhones are classified as "Cru" and sold at higher prices under the names of their villages). The Cotes du Rhone appellation is best suited to red wines, and that's where a bulk of the area's wine production lies.

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

The smallest production cuvée and almost all Grenache from the sandy parts of la Crau, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale gives up a huge nose of cassis, orange peel, spring flowers, and spice. It’s full-bodied, incredibly pure, elegant, and silky, with no hard edges and remarkable purity. It’s a killer wine and unquestionably one of the gems in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
From a parcel of Grenache in la Crau (ouest)’s sandy soils, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Speciale is the pick of the T-L CdP lineup. Yes, there’s hallmark cedar and vanilla touches, but once past those, there’s incredible raspberry and kirsch flavors. Full-bodied, supple and creamy across the palate, it ends silky and long, with intense fruit coming through on the finish.
VN93+93–94 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2019
Deep bright-rimmed violet. Deep-pitched red berry preserve, candied licorice and exotic spice aromas are lifted by a smoky mineral note that gains strength as the wine opens up. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering bitter cherry, black raspberry and fruitcake flavors and a touch of spicy white pepper. In a distinctly ample style but not at all lacking for energy. The impressively long, gently tannic finish shows no rough edges and leaves a sappy cherry liqueur note behind.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2020
Dark currant, fig and blackberry paste flavors are melded together, carried by a graphite spine and infused with red tea, anise and sweet tobacco notes on the finish. Solidly built. Best from 2021 through 2035. 625 cases made, 20 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Classic notes of quince, crushed stone, honeysuckle, toasted bread, marzipan, and white flowers emerge from the 2019 Hermitage Blanc, a rich, full-bodied white with a dense mid-palate, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is head-turning stuff that has some up-front approachability, yet its tight, backward, concentrated core of fruit suggests that 2–3 years of bottle age are warranted, and it’s going to keep for 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2022
A rich and showy wine, with singed brioche and salted butter notes leading off, followed by creamed yellow apple, mirabelle plum, melon and mango notes all mixed together. The finish features a buttery hint, with an echo of macadamia nut. One for the hedonist crowd. Marsanne and Roussanne. Drink now through 2024. 400 cases made, 5 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Forward and heady, with nice range to the sappy cherry and raspberry puree flavors, which are infused with red tea, chalky mineral, cinnamon and clove notes. Builds in power toward the finish, with crushed iron and a beam of acidity bringing freshness. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made, 250 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The 2021 Cairanne Vieilles Vignes shows the fresher, more medium-bodied style of the vintage and has pretty floral, violet, and peppery notes, soft tannins, and an up-front, charming style that will unquestionably offer pleasure in its youth. (Jeb Dunnuck)

WE9696 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2021
Rocky tones of granite and earth are lifted by a hint of violet florals in this sleek, stately Hermitage. It’s a gorgeous, linear wine in youth but offers beautifully concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors edged by firm, penetrating tannins. Hold till 2024 at least — it’s likely to develop and expand beautifully well past 2038.
JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
The 2018 Hermitage shows lots of Le Méal-like character in its ripe, sexy bouquet of black raspberries, melted licorice, roasted meat, and smoky, barbecue-like aromas and flavors. This full-bodied, powerful wine has a wealth of fruit, ripe, sweet tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
Showing more fragrance and less oak than the 2017 version, Tardieu’s 2018 Hermitage boasts perfumed notes of fennel, cracked pepper and red raspberries, plus hints of smoked meat and mocha. Medium to full-bodied, it’s richly textured on the palate, finishing long and velvety. Like all of the Tardieu-Laurent Northern Rhône from 2018, it’s approachable now, yet this one could age for a decade or so.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 24, 2021
Ripe and refined, with a sleek edge to the mix of cassis and cherry reduction notes, while licorice, alder and red tea accents fill in throughout. A subtle mineral note hangs amid the fruit on the polished finish. Drink now through 2034. 450 cases made, 5 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Bright and elegant, with pretty cherry, floral and graphite shavings on the firm, medium-weight palate. Subtle hints of vanilla and smoke add a touch of roundness to the somewhat austere profile. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2025. 5,000 cases made, 1,400 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Looking at the 2021s, the 2021 Côtes Du Rhône Les Becs Fins has outstanding potential, with solid aromatics of dark, almost blue fruits as well as peppery herbs and some minerality. It’s medium-bodied, and has a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Expressive nose of dark berries, roasted meat, smoke, and dried leaves with baking spices and cold fire-pit undertones. It’s full-bodied with finely grained tannins. Textured with a suave character. Elegant Hermitage here with controlled power at all stages. Focused and concentrated yet it has this brightness of fruit at the center with succulent cherries and wild currants providing freshness and verve. Superb. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is a true “wow” wine if there ever was one. I believe all from La Crau and mostly Grenache, it has incredible purity in its blue fruits, peppery herbs, violets, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. Deep, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, with ripe tannins and a great mid-palate, this absolutely brilliant 2020 needs just 2–3 years of bottle age and I suspect will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Bravo! (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2023
Enticing, with a mix of boysenberry and mulberry compote flavors cruising through, this is scored with a prominent graphite note and backed by mesquite, sweet tobacco and violet accents on the finish. Grippy and well-structured too, with a late tug of warm earth. Grenache and Mourvedre. Best from 2024 through 2040. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Another killer wine, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes reveals a dense purple color to go with loads of red and blue fruits, bacon fat, cured meat, and spring flowers. Offering classic Saint-Joseph minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, and plenty of both acidity and tannins, it’s going to shine for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
