Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

This throws off a robust and zesty mix of loganberry, açaí and red and black cherry compote flavors, mixed with mouthwatering olive, sweet bay leaf and savory notes. Features nice charcoal streaks that add to the finish. Solidly built. Best from 2024 through 2036. 275 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Notes of mulberries, plums, purple flowers, rosemary and minerals. Full-bodied with firm tannins. Perfumed and structured with a plush, flavorful center-palate. Chalky, concentrated and rich, with cocoa and walnut notes on the finish. Try from 2023.

Rocky tones of granite and earth are lifted by a hint of violet florals in this sleek, stately Hermitage. It’s a gorgeous, linear wine in youth but offers beautifully concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors edged by firm, penetrating tannins. Hold till 2024 at least — it’s likely to develop and expand beautifully well past 2038.
JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/16/2019
The 2018 Hermitage shows lots of Le Méal-like character in its ripe, sexy bouquet of black raspberries, melted licorice, roasted meat, and smoky, barbecue-like aromas and flavors. This full-bodied, powerful wine has a wealth of fruit, ripe, sweet tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
Showing more fragrance and less oak than the 2017 version, Tardieu’s 2018 Hermitage boasts perfumed notes of fennel, cracked pepper and red raspberries, plus hints of smoked meat and mocha. Medium to full-bodied, it’s richly textured on the palate, finishing long and velvety. Like all of the Tardieu-Laurent Northern Rhône from 2018, it’s approachable now, yet this one could age for a decade or so.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2021
Ripe and refined, with a sleek edge to the mix of cassis and cherry reduction notes, while licorice, alder and red tea accents fill in throughout. A subtle mineral note hangs amid the fruit on the polished finish. Drink now through 2034. 450 cases made, 5 cases imported.

An up-front, pretty version of this cuvée that leads with its fruit, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes Blanc offers lots of honeyed pineapple, white flowers, quince, and subtle toasty notes to go with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It shows some classic bitter almond and minerality with time in the glass and has a great texture, good overall freshness, and a great finish. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
There’s a flashy shortbread aromatic leading off here, but this stays bright and lively thanks to well-defined yellow apple and mirabelle notes. Verbena and quinine underscore the finish, adding focus and length. Delicious. Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul. Drink now through 2022. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Mouthfilling, with a delicious gush of warmed blackberry and boysenberry compote flavors backed by licorice, bramble and sweet tapenade notes, which contrast with the fruit nicely. Features a nice buried iron spine on the finish. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 25 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD93+93–95+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/5/2021
The 2019 Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes offers slightly more dark fruit and minerality as well as a more concentrated yet backward style on the palate. Full-bodied and structured, with terrific purity, it’s going to require more bottle age than the base and, but it should have two-plus decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Based on 50% Viognier, 25% Grenache, 20% Roussanne, and 5% Clairette, the light gold-hued 2022 Côtes du Rhône Les Becs Fins has a terrific, dare I say, Condrieu-like perfume of ripe orange blossom, apricots, honeyed flowers, and white peach. Nicely textured, medium-bodied, and concentrated, with good acidity, it’s a beautiful, layered, versatile white perfect for enjoying over the coming year or two. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Juicy, with a core of blackberry, raspberry and black currant compote flavors that bristles with energy, thanks to sweet tapenade, licorice root and singed mesquite notes mixed in. The finish is fine-grained and harnesses everything together nicely. Shows serious juice. Best from 2024 through 2038. 175 cases made, 15 cases imported.
JD92+92–94 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 3/5/2021
More smoked game, bouquet garni, bacon fat, violets, and red and blue fruits emerge from the 2019 Cornas. It’s full-bodied, concentrated, and impressive on the palate, with both richness and freshness as well as building tannins. It’s going to need bottle age, but it’s impressive. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Dark and a bit reticent still, showing a very deep well of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry puree flavors scored by roasted apple wood and licorice root notes. Features serious drive on the finish, with a tannic spine that easily shoulders the load of fruit, while a subtle mineral note peeks through. This is built for the cellar. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)
JD95+95–97 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 12/14/2020
The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is similarly deep purple hued and has a ripe, sexy style that’s very much in the vintage. Loads of black raspberries, Asian spices, candied flowers, and peppery garrigue give way to a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful wine with terrific balance, plenty of ripe and polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a ripe, opulent wine that stays graceful and beautifully balanced. My money is on it benefiting from 4–5 years of bottle age, and it should have two decades of longevity. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Fleshy and lush, with green pear, quince and lychee wrapped around a core of salty mineral. Elegant floral notes highlight the broad yet focused palate, which is offset by refreshing quinine bitterness. Drink now through 2030. 250 cases made, 25 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Alluring mesquite, steeped cherry and warmed plum notes flow together, with a hint of mulling spice filling in on the finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2021. 750 cases made.
JD90+90–92 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/28/2018
The inky colored 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre) should be outstanding. Classic notes of ripe black cherries, graphite, and scorched earth all flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, and silky 2017 that has more elegance and purity than most Rasteau out there. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP89+89–91 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Élevage for the 2017 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes consisted of a year in barrel, followed by six months in foudres, so the wine was still in wood during my June visit. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, it offers plentiful notes of cinnamon and clove, hints of vanilla and spice cake, plus raspberries and plums. It’s full-bodied, velvety and lush, probably best consumed over the next 5–6 years.
