Where It's From

District / Marlborough

View more wines from Marlborough

Marlborough is undoubtedly New Zealand's most famous wine region, producing many of the crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blancs that put New Zealand on the wine map.

Located on the northeastern corner of South Island, this region is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and towering mountains to the north and south. This spectacularly beautiful setting has the ideal climate and soil composition for Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

Region / South Island

View more wines from South Island

The picturesque South Island of New Zealand is home to five renowned wine regions, each with a number of quality producers. Marlborough is famous for producing some of New Zealand's crisp and zesty Sauvignon Blancs, while Central Otago is home to some terrific Pinot Noirs. You'll also find great wines in the other regions: Canterbury, Nelson, and Waipara Valley.

Country / New Zealand

View more wines from New Zealand

From the crisp acidity of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the bold complexity of Central Otago’s Pinot Noirs, New Zealand wine is as unmistakable as it is unapologetic. Still a relative newcomer to the wine industry after making a splash in the global market in the late 1970’s, New Zealand has wasted no time in carving out a name for themselves and their distinctive wines.

Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s crown jewel, and thus, the most exported wine. The ferocious acidity and stark notes of grapefruit, gooseberry, and cut grass lead to an unforgettable wine drinking experience.

Other grapes of note in New Zealand include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also being grown for Bordeaux-style blends in the Hawke’s Bay region as well.

Very aromatic with loads of passion fruit and cement, as well as some grassy character. It’s medium-bodied with lots of fruit and a slightly off-dry sense to it, but it’s crisp and delicious. Tangy at the end. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

Clean and crisp with grapefruit, green melon and lemon character. Hints of stones. Medium body. Lovely acidity and a delicious finish. Some phenolic tension here. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap. (James Suckling)

Still very young, this could use another year in the bottle before it’s cracked open. If drinking now, leave time for aeration in the glass or decanter for the struck match reductive notes to blow off and be replaced by white grapefruit, lime, passion fruit and dried herbs. Its complexity really lies in the palate, which is poised with lovely texture, crystalline acidity and a long, tangy citrus fruit finish. (Christina Pickard)

Intensely fruity on the nose (think ripe peach, lemon and pineapple), the zingy acidity saves the day on the rounded palate, making this an easy summer tipple. (Christina Pickard)
