Marlborough is undoubtedly New Zealand's most famous wine region, producing many of the crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blancs that put New Zealand on the wine map.
Located on the northeastern corner of South Island, this region is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and towering mountains to the north and south. This spectacularly beautiful setting has the ideal climate and soil composition for Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

From the crisp acidity of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the bold complexity of Central Otago’s Pinot Noirs, New Zealand wine is as unmistakable as it is unapologetic. Still a relative newcomer to the wine industry after making a splash in the global market in the late 1970’s, New Zealand has wasted no time in carving out a name for themselves and their distinctive wines.
Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s crown jewel, and thus, the most exported wine. The ferocious acidity and stark notes of grapefruit, gooseberry, and cut grass lead to an unforgettable wine drinking experience.
Other grapes of note in New Zealand include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also being grown for Bordeaux-style blends in the Hawke’s Bay region as well.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Black Label is a well-judged style with attractive fruit. It is nicely textured, almost chewy, with some decent substance through its bright, firm core. It has attractive flavors of gooseberry, elderflower and passion fruit that combine well. Five months on lees rounds out its edges and also lends some flesh to the light-bodied palate. Intensely fruity on the nose (think ripe peach, lemon and pineapple), the zingy acidity saves the day on the rounded palate, making this an easy summer tipple. (Christina Pickard)
