Where It's From
District / Napa Valley
View more wines from Napa Valley
Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.
Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Impressively submitted for review in the same year that it was made, this bottling is, not surprisingly, superfresh, but it’s also just a great Sauvignon Blanc. Lively aromas of lime peel, chopped grass, kiwi and rainy concrete decorate the nose, while the palate is boosted by a zesty, citrus-powered acidity and a stony grip, with grass clippings most prevalent. Hillview Vineyard
2020 / 750 ml.
This white wine from an estate property is bright in lemon and tangerine, with a tasty accompianment of biscotti and anise. Well-integrated oak gives it structure and weight without being intrusive. A touch of pie dough and nutmeg coats the finish. (Virginie Boone)
A succulent, round chardonnay with nectarines, mangoes, dried jasmine, apple pie and vanilla custard on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with a creamy palate. Sweet peach notes to close. Drink now.
This has terrific focus to the juicy lemon curd, tangerine and peach flavors at the core, with a hint of peppery white flowers and salted butterscotch lingering on the long, expressive finish. Drink now. 5,700 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

2015 / 750 ml.
This shows real interest on the nose with fresh blackcurrants, ivy, tea leaf, vanilla, cloves and peppermint. Freshness comes through aplenty on the palate, which is full-bodied with structured if chewy tannins, some pretty acidity and a driven finish. Blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot. Drink in 2020.
Groth’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, hearty wine with good depth and density, but very much in the classic, mid-weight Groth style. Dark cherry, pomegranate, smoke, tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried flowers are nicely delineated in this attractive, expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Give the 2015 a few years in bottle for the tannin to soften.
Blended with 15% Merlot, this has a classic character of Old World savoriness, opening in a burst of cassis before becoming more well defined in cedar, clove and crayon wax. The firm tannins never distract, instead supporting a core of full-bodied roundness and plush texture.

2019 / 750 ml.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a tasty, easygoing Cabernet Sauvignon to drink row and over the next 10–15 years. Bright red/purplish berry fruit, spice and lifted floral notes lend freshness to this attractive, vibrant, mid-weight Cabernet. The 2019 is very nicely done, and is also one of the most approachable wines of the year, ever though there is plenty of grip. (Antonio Galloni)
Classic Napa Cabernet notes of red and black currants, ripe tobacco, violets, and cedary oak emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville, a medium-bodied, elegant, balanced, outstanding 2019 that’s perfect for drinking over the coming 10–12 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Mulberries, dark plums, dried herbs, cedar, coffee and cloves on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins. Fruity and crunchy. Drink from 2023. (James Suckling)
Juicy and fresh, with a good racy edge to the mix of raspberry and red currant coulis, with hints of anise, red tea and sassafras. Shows nice energy and focus throughout. Drink now through 2030. 24,000 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Hillview Vineyard
2016 / 750 ml.
Fleshy and full bodied, this wine shows a pronounced toasted-oak character, with swirls of pineapple and caramel contributing additional richness. Still, it retains enough acidity to offer a juicy core and lasting freshness amidst the fruit.

2014 / 750 ml.
Muted at first, this reserve wine shows a deft hand. A red currant tone is met by a mild grip of tannins and a soft midpalate that is lightly rich in coconut shavings and mocha. Supple and balanced in richness, it offers classic flavors of cassis and cherry wrapped in supportive oak.
Aromas of dark berry, fresh-cut herbs, cedary oak and gravelly earth are tight and well-centered. Still raw and edgy, but nothing a year or two won’t resolve. Patience required. Best from 2020 through 2033. 4,000 cases made.

2017 / 750 ml.
This has a mineral nose with aromas of blackcurrants, dried herbs, graphite and iodine. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins. A little short, but nicely done. Give it time to open. Drink or hold.
The 2017 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville) is a gorgeous wine. Pliant and racy in the glass with striking depth, it offers terrific richness and intensity. The 2017 benefits from some lots that might have otherwise gone into the Reserve. Super-ripe dark red cherry, pomegranate, mint, cinnamon and rose petal all add nuance, but it is the wine’s balance and overall sense of harmony that stand out the most. This flamboyant Cabernet is a real overachiever.
Showing a firm structure and rounded tannins, this impressive wine is balanced by plush red plum and cherry flavors. It is elegant and restrained, with accents of clove and cedar.
