Alpha Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2022 / 750 ml.

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is unoaked and dry and comes in at 13.1% alcohol. Like the other 2022s in this report, this has a crisp and wonderfully fresh feel. It is tightly wound and not quite as vegetal as some but always leaning to freshness. There is plenty of zing and zest on the finish and it makes this work. For all that freshness and elegance, it has reasonably good concentration and feels substantial in its youth (in bottle only about 60 days when tasted). This is a beauty in its style and on its own terms. It’s another success. It will drink great this summer, perhaps improve throughout the year and then hold on for several more. I do like to drink them on the younger side for safety, but I won’t be surprised if this one does a little better than anticipated. Not that there is any real point to holding it a long time. A bright, light- to medium-bodied white, with hints of flint and chive blossoms accenting ripe green pear and melon fruit. Well-knit, with a minerally finish. Drink now through 2026. 19,700 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world, with evidence of wine production dating back to 6,500 years ago. With that said, Greece has been largely overshadowed by many of its Mediterranean counterparts when it comes to Old World wine production. There are, however, some fantastic, critically-acclaimed wines coming from Greece. Many of these hail from the Aegean Islands and Peloponnese appellations.

The 2020 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard was aged for 12 months in 50% new French barriques (the rest second use). It comes in at 14.03% alcohol. Alpha’s Xinomavaro often leans to the silky in texture given the good acidity. The barriques change that a little and add some cream, but this is still classic for the most part, light in color, good in acidity and a little nervy overall. Alpha does tend to tame these, though, especially at this level, so that they are rarely astringent and they are approachable young. This drinks pretty well now, but it does have some chance to improve over the next few years. In the meanwhile, it is a perfect food wine, bright and elegant, plus reasonably priced (especially important if you’re in a restaurant). (Mark Squires)
