Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 95139

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is fascinatingly pure, bright, refined and flinty on the nose that reveals very fine Riesling, slate and iron aromas. Pure, fresh and filigreed on the palate, this is a crystalline, fresh and piquant, crisp and crystalline JSU Spätlese in the acidity-accentuated MFR style. The finish is pure and salty, piquant and concise and makes this an exciting wine to try again in 20 years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

I love the beautifully ripe but delicate yellow-fruit aromas of this Spätlese, ranging from mirabelle to peach and just a hint of honeysuckle. A noble wine that remains restrained and slowly reveals its treasures to the patient. Discreet grape sweetness adds a touch of creaminess to the mid-palate, but the very mineral finish is totally clean. Drink or hold.

Where It's From

Region / Mosel

View more wines from Mosel

Mosel is home to some of Germany's finest white wines, a majority of which are Rieslings. The region surrounds the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer rivers, and the soils in the region (full of Devonian Slate) make it perfect for growing Riesling grapes. The resulting wines are known for their aromatic floral bouquets and pronounced minerality.

Country / Germany

View more wines from Germany

The German wine-making tradition is long and illustrious, dating back to as early as AD 800. And for a country just slightly smaller than Montana, Germany produces and consumes a great deal of wine (it's the seventh-largest producer and sixth-highest consumer).

Germany is situated at the most northerly latitude at which grapes can ripen; the winters are cold and the growing season short, all of which, incidentally, are nearly identical to the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Most of its wine regions are situated in central and southwestern Germany. The most significant are the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Franken and Baden.

The Riesling grape is king in Germany, even though it represents only 20% of total plantings: Müller-Thurgau (a Riesling-silvaner cross) has the most, followed by the red grapes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder. In good years and in the care of master winemakers, Riesling makes one of the greatest white wines in the world, with a perfect balance of sugar and acid, exquisite fruit and fragrance and with considerable potential for aging.

The 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is bright, precise and elegant on the complex, refined, beautifully clear and flinty nose. Lush, refined and salty-piquant on the palate, this is a salty, crunchy and stimulating Kabinett with a long and intense finish. Bottled with 9.5% alcohol and 60 grams of residual sugar. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

So juicy, yet so fine, this is a “light” wine with very good ripeness, but more importantly a lot of finesse, the long finish brilliant and filigree. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Hang on to your hat. With its enormous ripeness and brilliant acidity, this monumental wine defies the limits of the Spätlese category. None of the exotic fruit that’s so typical for 2019, rather you’re in the kingdom of the peach here ! Decades of aging potential. Drink or hold.

Planned to be a Kabinett that finally got too ripe (100° Oechsle), the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and intense on the nose. Juicy and quite rich on the palate, this is a piquant and acidity-driven Spätlese with an enormously piquant and salty finish. Picked in the first week of October, it has laser sharp acidity that cuts through the rich texture that is based on 15% to 18% botrytis fruit. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) opens with an immediately attractive bouquet, with perfectly ripe peach aromas intermingled with very fine crunchy and flinty slate notes. Lush and intense yet weightless, with an enormously salty, finessed and elegant but also generously fruity palate lifted by crystalline and mouth-salivating acidity, this is a filigreed, transparent and immaculate Auslese of mind-blowing finesse and elegance and the sexiest expression of complexity. Tasted in May 2021. (Stephan Reinhardt)

The 2019 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5 is clear and coolish on the flinty nose that represents perfectly ripe and precise fruit with some minty notes. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a pure, tight, refreshing, stimulatingly piquant and salty and finessed Spätlese with a lot of grip and expression. Tasted from AP 5 20 in June 2020.

The 2019 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is very clear and concentrated on the dense and lime-fresh nose that is attractive in its precision, concentration and possibly also its cereal-tinged, crisp fruit aromas. Sweet and concentrated on the palate, this is a rich and very precise, tightly structured and persistent Spätlese with laser-sharp acidity that is imbedded into the dense, elegant and persistently salty Spätlese fruit. This is a great terroir wine—in 20 years—and I don’t see much sense in opening it a moment sooner. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. (Stephan Reinhardt)

Elisenberg sits on the south side of the Mosel, set well back from the river, behind the town of Mülheim. The cooler climate and combination of slate and quartz in the soils gives the wine a unique character — in the case of this 2019, one that’s herbal and sagey, with layers of lemony flavor — zest, pith, pulp and lemon verbena. The bright acidity gives it a vivacity that’s mouthwatering, ready to slice through a savory bread pudding.

The 2019 Elisenberger Riesling Kabinett is very clear, fresh and coolish on the still reductive yet pure and stony nose. Lush and piquant on the palate this is a concentrated, lean and laser-sharp Riesling with juicy fruit and concise acidity. The finish goes straight, which makes this a Riesling for Japanese knife fans. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2018 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett is deep but bright and refined on the flinty nose that offers perfectly ripe Riesling and crunchy slate aromas with a warm iron touch. On the palate, this is a lush, refined, salty-piquant, even racy Riesling with generous fruit and a very long, salty-piquant and crystalline finish. This is a highly complex Riesling in the most delicate expression. It’s one of the wines you just have to buy — there won’t be any regrets, not today or in 30 years. Since this Brauneberger has slightly more sulfur compared to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which still hasn’t been filtered and was tasted from the lees, I will retaste the wines early next year, as I am convinced a Mosel Riesling needs two winters to unmask itself. Tasted in March 2019.

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 26th Dec 2004
Smoky, dusty aromas of white pepper and caramelized minerals can be detected in the nose of the 2003 Riesling Eiswein Mulheimer Helenenkloster. A dense, syrupy offering, it offers jammy red fruit flavors that are intermingled with molasses and butterscotch. Thick, deep, and powerful, this is an expressive wine that is armed with an extremely long, sweet finish. While it will undoubtedly last for decades, I recommend drinking it before it becomes completely dominated by burnt sugar flavors. Anticipated maturity: now–2012.
