Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.
The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.
Region / New York
Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

The 2020 Riesling Ice Wine was picked on January 20, 2020, at 15 degrees, and bottled in June 2020. It comes in with 11.8% alcohol, 198 grams of sugar and 9.7 of total acidity. This, the winery is proud to point out, is a “true” ice wine — frozen on the vine, not in a freezer. Keeping its sugar under control, this aromatic ice wine offers freshness, not just cloying fruit. It does have a somewhat darker flavor profile, perhaps even a hint of reduction. That should get better. All the while, it seems remarkably concentrated in mouthfeel. This is both delicious and beautifully structured. There’s a long finish, full of flavor and surprisingly refreshing, relatively speaking. It should age quite well, probably better than indicated, but I am always conservative in such things. The price references a half bottle, from which this was tasted. There were 650 six-packs produced.
Apricot and tangerine notes burst forth in this orange zest-laced dessert wine, finishing with a flash of honeycomb. Nicely done. Drink now through 2026. 325 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Fleshy, rounded aromas of Mandarin, lemon oil and yellow apple are met with a brisk crushed stone element on the nose. This dry Riesling is juicy in feel, driven by a mix of pome and citrus flavors balanced by a gentle grip of white tea. Pert, refreshing acidity lends all the lift needed to make this a great choice as an aperitif. (Alexander Peartree)
Alluring, with creamed Jonagold apple, peach and lemon curd notes allied to a sleek, racy spine. Delivers a mouthwatering feel. Drink now through 2024. 425 cases made. (James Molesworth)

The ripe mirabelle, plum and melon aromas pour from the glass, but they remain delicate rather than lush. Quite powerful and succulent, but the crisp acidity structure keeps it on track on the very clean and subtly mineral finish, where the apricot note expands as it rolls off into the distance. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
A stunner year over year, this single-vineyard Riesling delves into earthy aromas of fennel pollen and sunbaked field flowers, with a solid core of yellow apple, and white peach. It’s rounded and full in feel, filling out by broad pome- and stone-fruit flavors underscored by white tea and blossoms. A gentle honeycomb-wax note lends delightful grip to the dry finish. (Alexander Peartree)
Juicy and engaging, with peach, pear and mirabelle plum notes bouncing playfully off each other, while honeysuckle and anise hints peek in. Long, zingy finish. Drink now through 2030. 800 cases made. (James Molesworth)
The 2020 Magdalena is in its infancy, showing a cool aromatic profile of spiced apple, lemon and a hint of orange peel. It’s expansive on the palate, with plenty of body but also plenty of acidity and phenolic structure to frame the weighty entry.
The 2020 Riesling Magdalena Vineyard comes in with seven grams of residual sugar and 12.4% alcohol. A little lighter and brighter, this doesn’t have the concentrated mouthfeel of, say, the Riesling Reserve in this report, but it is more transparent, more expressive and just seems sunnier. I could make an argument that this is the best of the group, at least today. That conclusion does require that you appreciate elegance more than concentration, but this shows beautifully. The upper-level submissions in this report all perform well, are pretty close qualitatively and may flip places as they age, but for the moment, this has some pretty good bragging points. Then, I retasted the Riesling Reserve and the HJW and started arguing with myself again. Perhaps in the end it is more a question of being different than better, with this being the most different of the three. So it goes with young Riesling. Let’s come back in five years and see what they look like with a little age. For the moment, they are all pretty fine and reasonable minds might differ. (Mark Squires)

This is a distinctive Riesling with lemony freshness, a minty, mushroomy undertone and a touch of volatile acidity. It’s tart, crisp and, yes, bone-dry, with some softly slippery texture, muted flavor and lifted, crunchy acidity. (Christina Pickard)

The 2020 Dry Riesling Argetsinger Vineyard has just three grams of sugar, plus 8.2 grams of total acidity and 13.4% alcohol. This is another $14 per bottle over the regular Dry Riesling, but it is the better wine. It is deeper, more intense and more likely to age well. It also has the expression of fruit that the regular Dry Riesling lacks. Despite the different balance between sugar and acidity, this remains nicely balanced too, not shrill at all. Right now, this looks like one of the best I’ve seen in the brand. It drinks nicely today, but it should easily last for another 10 years, probably more. It’s a beauty right now. Let’s also hope it improves and gains anticipated nuance over the next couple of years. I’m leaning up on it today. (Mark Squires)

Brimming with melon, citrus and fresh mint, this is effusive and vibrant with whiplash acidity that absorbs the touch of natural grape sweetness in this barely off-dry wine. Long, zesty finish. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

An excellent dry cabernet franc rosé with red berries and a touch of fresh red chili. Medium-bodied with good mid-palate generosity, then a gentle touch of tannin supporting the long finish.
