Where It's From

Region / Mosel

View more wines from Mosel

Mosel is home to some of Germany's finest white wines, a majority of which are Rieslings. The region surrounds the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer rivers, and the soils in the region (full of Devonian Slate) make it perfect for growing Riesling grapes. The resulting wines are known for their aromatic floral bouquets and pronounced minerality.

Country / Germany

View more wines from Germany

The German wine-making tradition is long and illustrious, dating back to as early as AD 800. And for a country just slightly smaller than Montana, Germany produces and consumes a great deal of wine (it's the seventh-largest producer and sixth-highest consumer).

Germany is situated at the most northerly latitude at which grapes can ripen; the winters are cold and the growing season short, all of which, incidentally, are nearly identical to the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Most of its wine regions are situated in central and southwestern Germany. The most significant are the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Franken and Baden.

The Riesling grape is king in Germany, even though it represents only 20% of total plantings: Müller-Thurgau (a Riesling-silvaner cross) has the most, followed by the red grapes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder. In good years and in the care of master winemakers, Riesling makes one of the greatest white wines in the world, with a perfect balance of sugar and acid, exquisite fruit and fragrance and with considerable potential for aging.

This Spatlese beams you up to Cloud 9, from where you have a wonderful view over the beautiful Mosel Valley. In spite of the considerable concentration, this is super-delicate and precise on the barely medium-bodied palate. Enormously long finish, where you barely feel the natural grape sweetness. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP95+95+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is pure, clear and flinty on the concentrated nose that is reminiscent of a fresh fruit salad served on a slate plate on an early summer morning. Light, lush and highly finessed but seriously structured on the palate, this is a savory, very clear and elegant Sonnenuhr Spätlese with great precision and finesse and highly stimulating salinity and mouth-watering grip on the finish. The acidity is crystalline and very delicate, making this another great Mosel Spätlese from the 2020 vintage. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 37 21 in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2022
An energetic, well-built wine, with juicy peach, fleshy lychee and guava flavors set against fine mineral and racy acidity. Delivers a flash of ginger, which adds nice warmth to the zesty finish. Drink now through 2040. 160 cases imported. (Bruce Sanderson)

The 2020 Zeltinger Schlossberg Auslese shows a pure, fresh and flinty bouquet of weathered slate with intense lemon aromas. Lush and generous on the palate, this is a highly refined and elegant Auslese with super stimulating salinity on the finish. It’s absolutely gorgeous due to its balance and finesse and very, very stimulating. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

Do yourself a favor and sit down with this very sensual riesling! A stunning Mosel Auslese that proves these wines can be really stunning drunk young and have great aging potential. Very long, cool and crisp finish. Drink or hold.

Spring-blossom, honeysuckle and gardenia aromas pour from the glass of this Spätlese, which effortlessly marries mangosteen and passion-fruit ripeness with serious concentration and great finesse. Racy acidity drives the very long, precise finish. Drink or hold.

Simultaneously juicy, very lively and elegant. Spot-on balance and brimming with white-fruit and lemon (fruit and blossom) aromas. Very clean and straight finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Very youthful, cool and pristine, this is an extremely elegant sleek and focused Kabinett. Although analytically there must be quite a bit of unfermented grape sweetness here, you barely feel it, so uplifting is the mineral freshness that drives this joyful Saar riesling. Very long finish. Drink or hold.

A juicy and immediately appealing riesling that’s dry enough for the dinner table, but is mostly about uncomplicated drinking pleasure. Plenty of apple, white peach and some honeysuckle. Starts very juicy and ends rather dry, with typical Mosel stoniness. Drink now. Screw cap.

Focused and pure, with inviting elderflower, white peach and chamomile, pithy grapefruit acidity and stony minerals that drive the lithe palate. Drink now. 2,360 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

Lemon-lime notes distinguish this intense, tightly wound Riesling, along with notes of lanolin and lilac, with vivid acidity matching the rich finish. Best from 2024 through 2039. 500 cases imported.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese is fine and subtle on the pure, herbal and crunchy/stony nose. Classy on the first palate, this is a sweet, piquant, racy and stimulatingly salty Würzgarten Spätlese that is still terribly young and needs some years to soften and gain finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

I love the mandarin-orange, bergamot, spice and curry-leaf aromas that pour from the glass. So much succulence, but also so much drive make this a very exciting Spätlese. Very bright and clean finish that extends a long way out.

Rich and giving, with intense acidity cutting through the fat. This is full of passion fruit, pineapple and mineral flavors, concentrated by a touch of cream. A crunch in the texture elevates the whole experience. The finish comes back in a wave of tropical fruit and mineral elements. Best from 2021 through 2032. 500 cases imported.

Whiffs of sun-burnt slate lend contrast to bright nectarine and citrus peel flavors in this clingy, textured Kabinett. Bristling acidity balances delicate swathes of honey- and nectar-like sweetness that linger on the finish. It’s delightfully refreshing, with complexity to linger over.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett is clear and flinty on the nose and delivers the typical ripe, lush and sensual fruit aromas of this famous grand cru. Piquant and racy, but also lush and juicy on the palate, this is a pure, fine and elegant but pretty sweet Kabinett. However, the wine is very attractive, but probably not as concentrated or complex as the corresponding Würzgarten.

A revolutionary style of Mosel Kabinett! A tornado of herbal and spicy aromas with stacks of dried orange peel and smoke. So much energy on the palate that is analytically sleek, but bold and very harmonious. The interplay of restrained tannins and juicy fruit, crisp acidity and spicy character is spectacular. So much structure at the powerful and compact finish! Drink or hold. Screw cap. (Stuart Pigott)

VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2018
This product of November 30 and December 5 pickings at multiple sites (Erdener Herrenberg prominent among them) delivers a slightly sweet-sour meld of green apple and apple candy with glazed pineapple. It displays prominent glycerol and considerable sense of stuffing to help buffer its blazing, penetrating, tangy brightness, and finishes with penetrating if edgy and only moderately complex persistence. I would permit it a year or two to settle itself, but given Eiswein’s caprices, I wouldn’t lose track of any bottles I cellared.

Veins of crushed slate and spice lend complexity to this spine-tingling wine. Fresh, sweet tangerine and stone-fruit flavors are concentrated yet pristine, bolstered by streaks of lemon and grapefruit acidity. The finish meanders long, nuanced by hints of bramble and earth.
RP89+89+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a pretty clear, fresh and intense Riesling bouquet with smoky and lemon-like, crushed stone, as well as some botrytis aromas. Sweet, lush and piquant on the palate, this Riesling has good purity, finesse and racy piquancy. This is a charming Spätlese with good grip and an aromatic finish. Still young, though.

Sun-drenched yellow-cherry and apricot notes extend from nose to palate in this deeply concentrated yet fresh-fruited spätlese. Zippy and spry, it pulsates with rich, ripe peach and tangerine flavors as well as a smoky, lingering finish. This decadent medium-sweet wine is drinking beautifully now but should hold through 2030.
