Dr. Konstantin Frank Eugenia Dry Riesling 2020 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97098
This youthful dry riesling has a slew of floral and herbal nuances, together with delicate stone-fruit and wild-berry notes. So elegant, in spite of the full, juicy fruit on the palate. The long, wet-stone finish is racy and pristine. Made with grapes from the estate vineyard on Keuka Lake. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
The 2020 Dry Riesling Eugenia comes in with three grams of residual sugar against 6.9 of total acidity and 12.9% alcohol. This is a single-vineyard selection from 1968 vines on soils with high slate content. The winery calls it their best Riesling plot. This is a surprisingly friendly wine this year, perhaps typical of the vintage. Maybe one day it will close down, but not today. It is splendid, showing off fine depth, a fruity demeanor and respectable power. As fruity as it is, it shows off a little tension on the finish too. This is very accessible this year, but it’s still likely to improve in the cellar. The winery is a strong proponent of the 2020 vintage (and they aren’t the only ones), but as impressive as this is, and granting that both are not here together, I’d take the 2019 just now. That may be slower-developing, but in a few years, a comparison will be intriguing. They are both very fine.

Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.
The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.
Region / New York
Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

The 2020 Riesling HJW Vineyard comes in with six grams of residual sugar and 12.5% alcohol. This was sourced from HJW vines planted in 1977. This takes the Flower Day Riesling, which is sourced from the younger 2009 vines at HJW, and adds concentration, plus a more unctuous texture while retaining a fairly crisp demeanor relative to what I’m seeing in this group of 2020s. The mouthfeel suggests depth and there are hints of complexity to come. This might be the most nuanced of Wiemer’s wines in this report. Plus, some six hours later, it did a better job of pulling in its parts and showing off its structure. It began to look a bit more like the 2019 and also like one of the nicest winners for Wiemer in 2020, with an excellent chance of improving over the next several years. It will not even be released until the summer of 2022. (Mark Squires)
Delicious from the start, with a burst of meringue, lemon gelée and Jonagold apple flavors backed by jasmine and honeysuckle accents through the long, pure finish. Drink now through 2032. 800 cases made. (James Molesworth)
Coiled aromas of yuzu, limestone and white blossoms give this dry Riesling an air of pent-up energy on a nose that’s waiting to explode. The medium-bodied palate delivers tense flavors of citrus peels and crushed stone matched by heady field blossoms, all while juicy apple and peach accents peak out their heads. A gentle grip of white tea, along with well-honed acidity, lend structure and length to it all. (Alexander Peartree)

A spectacular value, this riesling has the concentration and elegance of wines three times the price. It leads with tree-fruit scents—pear, lime and lime leaf, apple—and carries a caramelly accent throughout. Its flavors are focused, concentrated, effortless, with a sweetness that one never notices, that rounds the wine, keeping it balanced and on point for a sumptuous meal, like a crown roast of pork.
A very juicy and citrusy off-dry riesling that has plenty of peach character on the well-structured palate. Striking oyster-shell character at the crisp and vibrant finish that leaps and bounds over the palate. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
Rounded aromas of yellow apple and white peach meet dried field flowers and sun-baked clay in this semidry Riesling that deftly balanced fruit and earth elements. The palate shows a pleasing textural creaminess that is further filled out by ripe apple and peach flavors, with plenty of fresh acidity to lend ample balance. (Alexander Peartree)
A nice fresh, crunchy style, which keeps the off-dry edge honest, this sports lime, fennel and pippin apple notes, with a honeysuckle-infused finish. Drink now through 2023. 2,472 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Enveloping nose of mandarin oranges, apricots and summer flowers. Very succulent with a cornucopia of ripe fruit, the power beautifully underplayed. I love the way the juiciness and the lively acidity are intertwined at the long finish. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
The 2020 Dry Riesling Margrit comes in with 11.1 grams of residual sugar and 6.3 of total acidity, plus 12% alcohol. This is sourced from a single vineyard on Seneca Lake, owned by the winery, that was planted in 2008. Typically more on the sugary side than the Eugenia, relatively speaking, this is even a bit more elevated in sugar in this big year while the acidity is a little less. It still is balanced, quite delicious and relatively transparent. It’s the one that will make everyone swoon today. Calling it a crowd-pleaser may be an understatement. Great Riesling, though, acquires that “great,” by aging effortlessly and becoming something more. It will be interesting to see how much “more” this can acquire. If I had a quibble, the wine opens with some tension, but it loses some precision and power fairly quickly as it airs and warms. It has enough acidity so it will never be flabby and enough sugar and fruit so it will always be delicious, but I’d still give the nod to the Eugenia in this report. It also left me with some doubts as to how much it might improve. It can develop, for sure, but how much is the open question. I think it is at least a step behind the 2020 Eugenia and the 2019 Margrit (not here in this report). You sure won’t regret drinking it, though. (Mark Squires)
Aromas of apricot, yellow apple and honeycomb wax drive the nose of this Riesling sourced from the winery’s Seneca Lake vineyard. It’s pleasantly soft and supple on the palate yet lifted by bright acidity, creating a cohesive experience of peach, papaya and apple flavors that ends pert and lively. (Alexander Peartree)

The 2019 Dry Riesling “Margrit” comes in with 7.39 grams of residual sugar and 9.7 of total acidity, plus 12.8% alcohol. That is dry. This is sourced from a single vineyard on Seneca Lake, owned by the winery, that was planted in 2008. The winery says the site is somewhat warmer than their Keuka Lake properties, producing a riper wine. A big step up over the last I saw, this has power but also a juicy finish that displays fine fruit. As powerful as it is, it not just an acid-freak wine. That long finish is gripping and tense. The aromatics are powerful too, while the mid-palate is simply solid. This food-wine Riesling shows every sign of improving over the next decade. It may have layers yet to reveal. Giving it a year or so of cellar time would be a good idea.
Sourced from a vineyard on Seneca Lake, this wine offers a stony, earthy core surrounded by citrus and apple tones on the nose. The palate is broad and juicy yet dry in style, with honed lemon, pome fruit and crushed stone elements zipping along. (Alexander Peartree)

This light and fresh gewurz has so much rose-water character and a touch of candied angelica. Discreet tannins, but lively acidity. Very well crafted, but a bit simple at the finish. Drink now. Screw cap.
