The 2021 Semi-Sweet Riesling comes in with 34 grams of residual sugar, 7.5 of total acidity and 8.3% alcohol. You won’t mistake this for the Semi-Dry, since this comes with a blue-tinted bottle. This has good acidity to go with its sugar, but it is certainly well off dry, if you’re wondering. It’s easily the friendliest of the regular Rieslings from the winery this year (including the Dry and Semi-Dry), showing a touch of sugar around the edges to go with a fresh demeanor. This is a nice performance at this level for this vintage. It might be a step short of distinguished, but in the price category, there is plenty of bang for the buck. It should hold well throughout most of this decade. (Mark Squires)

Beautifully integrated aromas of lime zest and lavender, with a hint of white peach, lead to a racy, bone-dry palate that is laser-focused with a sturdy backbone and tingly citrus drive. Drink now and over the next decade. (Christina Pickard)

Very youthful nose with pronounced blackcurrant and Amalfi lemon aromas that need aeration to open up. Plenty of wet stone character on the sleek and tightly wound palate. Long, pointed finish with stony austerity and some lime zest character. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Screw cap. (Stuart Pigott)
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 04/23
Lean and lively, with scents of peach blossoms and scallion ribbons, this has a green austerity and lively acidity, to pair with a leek tart.

Very sleek, but graceful, with lovely delicacy. Lemon and lime-zest freshness, as well as nice apricot fruit and delicate floral notes. Long, filigree finish with moderate acidity in the 2021 context. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)

The 2021 Riesling HJW Vineyard comes in with six grams of residual sugar and 12.4% alcohol. A small (12%) part of the juice was aged for seven months in new, large-format Austrian foudres (2,000 liters). This was sourced from HJW vines planted in 1977 and 1978. It is the only one of the single vineyards bottled in this rainy vintage where the others were declassified. I expected that this would show well since it was the only one here of the typical single-vineyard wines from older vines. It will not be a monument to greatness in the winery’s long history, but it is very good and hardly a slacker. Moderately expressive and mostly open, even in its youth, it has a fresh feel and a friendly finish. It’s not particularly intense, but it lingers nicely and tastes great in a relatively dry-but-not-lean presentation. With aeration, the structure comes out to play and proves that this does also have some support for the fruit. It will age relatively well. (Mark Squires)

The aroma is likable if confected. Notes of green apple candy and white peach set to a backdrop of grapefruit, flower blossoms and baker’s yeast. Pinched acidity and what feels like a hefty dose of sulfur muffle the fruit. Apple and blossom flavors fight their way through to a short finish. (Christina Pickard)

A plump, easygoing style, with lime gelee and McIntosh apple notes mixed with a hint of anise. Drink now. (James Molesworth)

Subtle notes of candied citrus and stone fruit and honey lead to a palate that’s off-dry, with more honeyed fruit notes, but with a welcome lift of crisp acidity for freshness and drinkability. Drink with spicy chili pepper-heavy dishes. (Christina Pickard)

The 2021 Riesling Late Harvest comes in with 47 grams of residual sugar and 9% alcohol. Sugar becomes the keynote here, but this is hardly all that sweet. It’s just young and lush. The sugar on the finish makes the overall presentation a bit nicer, perhaps, than on the other wines in the lineup since it covers up any missing expression of fruit in this rainy vintage. The price is nice too, but you will have to like that sugary edge. There’s not a lot of intensity, but this still has a shot at holding pretty well. If I had a quibble, it did seem to get a little funky in aromatics as it aired out. It still showed well overall, though, so let’s lean up for the moment. There were 1,099 cases produced. Honeycomb, pear, orange peel and orchard blossom aromas lead to a dry, succulent palate that’s light on its feet, with tangy stone and citrus fruit and mouthwatering acidity that makes it easy to take another sip. (Christina Pickard)
