Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Elegant, with an appealing, creamy nappe to the texture as it carries notes of ripe pear, peach skin, blood orange peel, green almond and orchard blossoms. A tangy streak of salinity and lively acidity focus and refresh the finely woven flavors and nicely spicy finish. Drink now through 2029. 8,400 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The 2018 Alto Adige Terlano Chardonnay Kreuth opens to a pretty medley of Meyer lemon and sweet almonds, with some distant cinnamon or vanilla spice at the back. There are tangy layers of rosemary or lavender essence and even a touch of savory laurel leaf. This cool-climate Chardonnay is rich, creamy and beautifully textured with soft and lasting intensity. This is a terrific medium-bodied choice for baked codfish or spicy chili crab. The wine’s texture is enhanced by sur lie aging in both wooden barrel and stainless steel. Production is an ample 65,000 bottles.

Hints of lime blossom and star anise are a fragrant entry for this vibrant, medium-bodied white, accenting the palate’s ripe and creamy nectarine and star fruit flavors. Finely-knit, shows a backbone of zesty acidity and a tang of salinity creating a mouthwatering impression on the racy finish. Drink now through 2028. 5,416 cases made, 450 cases imported.
VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
Here I find a sweet and alluring display of ripe peach and subtle spice offset by airy spring flowers and a hint of citrus-tinged white smoke. On the palate, the 2018 Chardonnay Kreuth makes itself known with creamy, almost-oily textures, carried across the senses over a core of salty minerals with a brisk acid twang. The finish is long and slightly smoky, resonating on inner florals and hints of spiced apple. This is showing very well already, yet a few years in a cold cellar may bring some more depth to the picture.

A mouthwatering white, with vivacious acidity buoying flavors of pineapple, pink grapefruit granita and hints of fresh tarragon, fleur de sel and almond blossoms. Well-knit and stylish, with the flavor range persisting on the long finish. Drink now through 2028. 30,833 cases made, 1,200 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The Winkl Sauvignon Blanc shines out of the glass with scents of magnolia, passion fruit, lime leaf and mixed citrus. Very bright on the palate with a lifted nature that pops with ripe grapefruit flavors topped with crunchy sea salt on the electric and nervy finish. (Jeff Porter)

A fragrant version, with an expressive note of steeped boysenberry, plus a warm mix of baked cherry, fig cake, dried sage and cocoa powder. Fine, chalky tannins firm the savory finish, with hints of olive, smoke and milled pepper. Best from 2026 through 2031. 5,250 cases made, 125 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 4/1/2024
Big, bold and beautiful, this wine states its case plainly with forward aromas of blackberry, violets, licorice and crushed stone. Seemingly hedonistic, the wine restrains itself on the palate with gamy and savory flavors that draw the attention deeper into the wine as it continues to develop with each minute in the glass finishing with a firm stamp of tannins on the finish. Incredibly intense yet subtle damson-plum and forest-berry nose with delicate, spicy overtones. Then, a densely concentrated but very precise palate that’s powerful, crisp and mineral all at once, the acidity lifting the super long finish beautifully. Great aging potential! Drink or hold.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Sep 2021
Pouring from the bottle with an inky black and impenetrable appearance, the 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Porphyr paints a classic portrait of this indigenous northern Italian grape with its characteristic chiaroscuro delivery, with rich black fruit contrasted against raw primary intensity with tangy cherry and blackberry. Some 22,000 bottles were made. A 14% alcohol expression, enjoy it on its own or serve it with a warm slice of mincemeat pie.

This well-knit red delivers generous notes of blackberry preserves and crème de cassis layered with supple tannins and accents of star anise, Mediterranean herbs, loamy earth and cocoa powder. Lasting finish. Drink now through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 2,000 cases made, 100 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - May 2023
The 2020 Lagrein Riserva Porphyr opens with a mentholated freshness, as wild herbs and sweet smoke nuances accentuate crushed blackberries. This is silky and elegant on the palate, displaying polished red and black fruits complicated by a sour citrus hint. The Riserva Porphyr finishes structured and long, leaving a bitter twang of wild berries and fine-grained tannins that adds youthful tension. (Eric Guido)

A rare example of a Northeast Italian Pinot Grigio that combines full pear and melon fruit with excellent freshness, plus generous depth with a lightness of touch. Impressive length for this category, thanks to the positive tannins that underline it. Drink now.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 8th Dec 2022
Always a delightful wine to drink, the well-priced Cantina Terlano 2021 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Tradition reveals a light gold color and characteristic aromas of lemon peel, dried hay, wild sage and crushed limestone. Only seeing stainless steel, the wine hits that intersection between crisp fruit and minimality. This is the secret of its massive drinking appeal. This versatile wine (with 170,000 bottles released) could pair with fish tacos, Thai salads, Mediterranean fish, and the list goes on. (Monica Larner)
