Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.
The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.
Region / New York
Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

There’s a slightly synthetic, sour grape and yeast note atop this wine that distracts from the variety’s more pleasant floral and fruit aromas. The palate is bone dry with searing acidity, a slippery texture and subtle citrus and tropical fruits and blossom notes to the finish. Lots of winemaking here. (Christina Pickard)

This has a youthful nose of yellow grapefruit zest and yellow roses. Medium-bodied, quite creamy palate, but there’s a slight touch of bitterness at the finish. Good depth and this clearly needs some time in bottle to open up. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Aromas of fresh tropical fruits, thyme and an array of colored flowers. Medium-bodied with a silky texture. Not as flamboyant on the palate as the nose leads you to believe, but fruity all the same. A bit short. Drink now.

Making a cabernet franc of this quality in the 2023 vintage is a major achievement. The fine tannins form a compact core, which gives this warmth, drive and energy. Plenty of licorice, tobacco leaf and spice at the long, surprisingly plush finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. (Stuart Pigott)

Complex nose of herbs, savory notes and redcurrants. Quite a crisp palate, but with plenty of red and black currants. Good depth and healthy tannins are packed into the rather sleek body, together with lively acidity. Drink now.
Cohesive aromas of black cherry, black plum and tilled earth are lifted by savory accents of dewy herbs and crushed red pepper flakes in this well balanced Cabernet Franc. It shows smooth tannins on the palate that support the juicy berry and plum flavors, with a polish and poise to it all that makes it a delight to drink. (Alexander Peartree)

Give this time in the glass to aerate. Then, delicate aromas of white peach, citrus and florals appear. The palate is, unsurprisingly, quite sweet, but with enough mouthwatering acidity to buoy it. Sip well-chilled with a salty blue cheese. (Christina Pickard)

The ripe mirabelle, plum and melon aromas pour from the glass, but they remain delicate rather than lush. Quite powerful and succulent, but the crisp acidity structure keeps it on track on the very clean and subtly mineral finish, where the apricot note expands as it rolls off into the distance. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
A stunner year over year, this single-vineyard Riesling delves into earthy aromas of fennel pollen and sunbaked field flowers, with a solid core of yellow apple, and white peach. It’s rounded and full in feel, filling out by broad pome- and stone-fruit flavors underscored by white tea and blossoms. A gentle honeycomb-wax note lends delightful grip to the dry finish. (Alexander Peartree)
Juicy and engaging, with peach, pear and mirabelle plum notes bouncing playfully off each other, while honeysuckle and anise hints peek in. Long, zingy finish. Drink now through 2030. 800 cases made. (James Molesworth)
The 2020 Magdalena is in its infancy, showing a cool aromatic profile of spiced apple, lemon and a hint of orange peel. It’s expansive on the palate, with plenty of body but also plenty of acidity and phenolic structure to frame the weighty entry.
The 2020 Riesling Magdalena Vineyard comes in with seven grams of residual sugar and 12.4% alcohol. A little lighter and brighter, this doesn’t have the concentrated mouthfeel of, say, the Riesling Reserve in this report, but it is more transparent, more expressive and just seems sunnier. I could make an argument that this is the best of the group, at least today. That conclusion does require that you appreciate elegance more than concentration, but this shows beautifully. The upper-level submissions in this report all perform well, are pretty close qualitatively and may flip places as they age, but for the moment, this has some pretty good bragging points. Then, I retasted the Riesling Reserve and the HJW and started arguing with myself again. Perhaps in the end it is more a question of being different than better, with this being the most different of the three. So it goes with young Riesling. Let’s come back in five years and see what they look like with a little age. For the moment, they are all pretty fine and reasonable minds might differ. (Mark Squires)

Very sleek, but graceful, with lovely delicacy. Lemon and lime-zest freshness, as well as nice apricot fruit and delicate floral notes. Long, filigree finish with moderate acidity in the 2021 context. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
The 2021 Riesling HJW Vineyard comes in with six grams of residual sugar and 12.4% alcohol. A small (12%) part of the juice was aged for seven months in new, large-format Austrian foudres (2,000 liters). This was sourced from HJW vines planted in 1977 and 1978. It is the only one of the single vineyards bottled in this rainy vintage where the others were declassified. I expected that this would show well since it was the only one here of the typical single-vineyard wines from older vines. It will not be a monument to greatness in the winery’s long history, but it is very good and hardly a slacker. Moderately expressive and mostly open, even in its youth, it has a fresh feel and a friendly finish. It’s not particularly intense, but it lingers nicely and tastes great in a relatively dry-but-not-lean presentation. With aeration, the structure comes out to play and proves that this does also have some support for the fruit. It will age relatively well. (Mark Squires)
