Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.
Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

2021 / 750 ml.
Ripe nose, full of spiced lemon, pineapple and a savory, leesy undertone. Bright and full-bodied for a chardonnay, showing some elegant citrus flavors in the mid-palate, with fine lees and a subtle, grippy finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
The 2021 Estate Grown Chardonnay Mitsuko’s Vineyard kicks off fermentation in tank before being transferred into barrels for the second half of the primary fermentation (and malolactic fermentation). Featuring scents of tangerine, sweet corn and vanilla (30% new French oak is employed), it’s a bit eccentric but flavorful and reasonably intense. It’s medium to full-bodied, plump and generous on the palate, with an appealing touch of baking spices on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2021 Chardonnay Calesa Vineyard, matured in 35% new French oak, features intense lemon jelly and nectarine aromas on the nose with wafts of chalk and beeswax. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully satiny and concentrated, its ripe fruit complemented by energetic acidity and well-integrated oak spices, and it boasts a lengthy, mouth-coating finish with soaring citrus flavors. 1,210 cases were made. This is a reliably tropical spin on Chardonnay each vintage, and this bottling shows ample restraint, starting with tight aromas of jasmine, melon and pineapple cream. The palate is clean and crisp though still quite tropical, showing pineapple, mangosteen and light tuberose flavors. (Matt Kettmann)

The entry point into Sterling’s Cabernet lineup is the 2020 Heritage Collection Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak, it’s a plump, easygoing effort, medium-bodied and loaded with black cherries. Soft, supple and easy to drink, it’s surprisingly clean (seemingly smoke-free) and juicy; just a good, solid drink that finishes with some gentle tannins. (Joe Czerwinski)
