Dense, ripe fruit flavors pack a big punch in this full-bodied, generous and complex wine. Toasted oak meets vivid lemon, pear and apple notes braced by tangy acidity that keeps it refreshing. Great both before and with dinner. (Jim Gordon)

Where It's From
District / Sonoma County
View more wines from Sonoma County
Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Pretty citrus, melon, honeysuckle, and floral notes emerge from the 2022 Chardonnay Santa Barbara County, a pretty, medium-bodied, lively and impeccably made Chardonnay with tons of character. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Lean aromas of lemon pith and plaster of paris are tight on the nose of this countywide cuvée. Wet-clay aromas are cut by lemon peel on the brisk palate. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2022 Chardonnay Luminus is a rich, dynamic white. Orchard fruit, white flowers, mint and a kiss of French oak are front and center. There’s terrific texture and depth. Lifted floral overtones add character to the finish. (Antonio Galloni)

This wine is rich, opulent with aromas of ripe green apple, peach, mulled spice, toasty vanilla cream and orange zest on the nose. The flavors on the palate are yellow apple, allspice and white grapefruit that transform into orange sherbet, mineral and a long, silky finish. Pair with weekday meals. (Tonya Pitts)

Very focused and broad on the nose that displays sliced golden apples, orange zest and chamomile tea leaves with subtle toasty notes and baking spices. Medium-bodied, soft yet bright acidity. Glossy and harmonious. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
Scents of stone fruit and crème brûlée appear on the nose of the 2022 Post & Beam Chardonnay from Far Niente. Plump, well rounded and full-bodied in the mouth, it’s a fine, if somewhat stereotypical Napa Chardonnay, generous and verging on slightly warm, with a rich, custardy feel and just enough acidity to retain a semblance of balance. Drink it over the next few years. (Joe Czerwinski)

This bottling, formerly from a historic site in Santa Barbara County but now 75% from Monterey County, brings a lot to the table for a favorable price. Aromas of citrus sorbet and wet stone lead from the nose into a palate offering brisk apple, more citrus and high acidity. (Matt Kettmann)
