Both agile and relaxed, this well-balanced, vibrant and concentrated wine carries layers of crisp apple, pastry crust and lemon curd on snappy acidity that complements a fairly rich texture and medium body. Its creamy-tangy finish lingers a long time. (Jim Gordon)
This powerful version offers mouthwatering lemon curd, lime blossom and mandarin orange flavors that show notes of fresh-grated ginger and lemon verbena. Sea salt minerality gains momentum on the finish, where grace notes of toasted green tea, citrus zest and white pepper linger. Drink now through 2030. 7,176 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

From a site in the heart of the appellation farmed by the Martinelli family, from cuttings that can be traced back to Hyde Vineyard, this white dazzles in salty sea air, oyster shell and hay, with subdued richness and layers of Gravenstein apple and pear. The acidity drives it into a fresh array of tension and texture.
The 2018 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard was aged 20 months in 25% new French oak. It’s a lovely, mineral-driven style, with scents that segue from iodine and dashi to spiced apples and quince. The palate is silky, featherweight and minerally, finishing very long and lifted. 540 cases were made.
Crisp and zesty, with a lively mix of green apple, Key lime and fresh-crushed savory spice flavors that are backed by vibrant acidity. Shows light buttery nuances on the intensely spicy finish. Best from 2022 through 2027. 540 cases made.

Features a dense core of cherry paste and plum fruit, laced with a range of blood orange, plum pit, grilled savory and chalk notes. Tightly focused, with the fruit remerging steadily through the finish. Will cellar well. Best from 2021 through 2034. 7,177 cases made.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 7% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep ruby, it has an incredible nose of licorice, dried flowers and mint chocolate over black berries and black cherries, cedar shavings and pencil lead, plus spicy clove and star anise touches. Medium to full-bodied, it floods the mouth with plush flavor layers wrapped in chocolate-textured, pixelated tannins and great freshness to counter, finishing long and luscious. 7,177 cases produced.
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a hot, sunny vintage yet has a pure, classy character. Notes of crème de cassis, tobacco, leafy herbs, and spring flowers are just some of the aromatics and it’s medium-bodied, elegant, and incredibly polished on the palate. It’s another wine from Ramey that’s nicely balanced, with terrific purity and loads of class. (Jeb Dunnuck)
David Ramey’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is racy and inviting, with all of its natural exuberance on display. Another year in bottle has really helped the 2015 come together. Pretty red fruit and floral notes add a kick of brightness to balance the natural exuberance of the growing season.

Deep ruby-purple, the 2018 Claret is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot. It features blackcurrant aromas with accents of peppercorn, bacon, cedar, thyme and lavender. Full-bodied, its powerful, concentrated fruits are supported by finely grained tannins, and it has a long, still youthfully coiled finish. It will continue to unfold for several more years in bottle. 2,432 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)
The 2018 Claret is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Syrah, and the rest Petit Verdot. It is fresh with aromas of graphitic earth and red plum, and the palate reveals fine tannins and the juicy, youthful appeal of red apple and crushed roses. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of ripe black berries, crushed black currants, pencil lead and dried herbs with hints of dark chocolate and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with a great intensity and harmony, it has a solid backbone of firm grainy tannins and great length. Still very youthful and primary, give it another 2–3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years.
From Oakville, the 2013 Pedregal Vineyard is usually the top Cabernet Sauvignon. A classic nose of cedar wood, forest floor, blackcurrants and loamy earth notes is followed by a wine of stunning intensity, full-bodied potency, beautiful purity and length. There is plenty of tannin, but the extravagant richness seems to cover it up extremely well.
This wine was co-fermented with 15% Petit Verdot from the same rocky, hillside site. The two varieties marry seamlessly in the glass, exuding a distinct perfume of forest mushroom and violet. Though pronounced in structure the wine is also soft and round, with a dotting of dried herb and a considerable length of clove and dust. It’s rich, intense and memorable.
The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stuffing and potential here.
Shows impressive richness, size and grace. For all the depth and intensity, this features a supple, caressing element to the tannins, letting the earth, dried herb and dark berry flavors flow easily. The tannins linger in the background and then finish with a burst of licorice, spice, mocha and oak details. Best from 2019 through 2032. 615 cases made.

A finished tank sample, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is made using about 25% whole-cluster fermentation — the first time, David Ramey says, that they’ve experimented with whole cluster. Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, it has a gregarious, youthful nose with tangerine peel, soft baking spices, forest floor and a wicked vein of floral nuance with warm red and black fruits at the core. The palate gives good concentration of spicy fruit, with grainy tannins and juicy acidity, finishing long and spicy. 2,400 cases are expected to be made and released in September 2019.
As to the reds, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley comes from a handful of sites and spent 14 months in just under 40% new French oak. Its translucent ruby color is followed by a complex, earthy effort that offers mulled strawberry and cherry fruit, notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and saddle leather, medium-bodied richness, and a great texture. This Burgundy lover’s Pinot Noir shines for its complexity and elegance more than power and richness. (Jeb Dunnuck)
This wine is sourced from a selection of different vineyards, including Bucher along Westside Road. Earthy funk underlies high-toned red cherry, rhubarb and strawberry, threading the needle between richness and crispness. A salty savory finish tops things off.
Delicate, with finely textured dried cherry and raspberry tart flavors, supported by fresh acidity. Shows cherry confit notes midpalate, revealing plenty of spice and smoke hints on the finish. Drink now through 2022. 2,559 cases made.

The 2017 Claret is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. It opens with classic scents of chocolate-covered cherries, cedar, bay leaves and tobacco with a very classy frame of sweet spices. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied and plushly fruited with a fine grain and great freshness, finishing long. 4,482 cases produced.
A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, and the rest a mix of varieties, the 2017 Claret has a bright, edgy bouquet of blue fruits, graphite, toasted spice, and scorched earth. With lots of minerality, some vanilla oak, firm tannins, and medium to full body, it reminds me of a Cabernet from Ridge’s Monte Bello Vineyard. It shows the firmer, more linear style of the vintage, so give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following 7–8 years or so. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2017 Claret is a supple, fruity wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Ripe red cherry, red plum, mocha and dried flowers give this juicy Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot-based blend a good deal of complexity. Floral overtones linger nicely on the finish.
