Where It's From
District / Sonoma County
View more wines from Sonoma County
Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

2020 / 750 ml.
Lime leaf, crumbled herb and chiseled stone aromas hit the nose in this bottling, a new project for the Daou brothers. The palate is bright in a citrus tonic flavor, with a Key lime pie element that arises as well. (Matt Kettmann)

Don Miguel Vineyard
2020 / 750 ml.
Fragrant and detailed, with honeysuckle, orange blossoms and hints of vanilla bean on a supple, elegant frame. Reveals ripe melon, baked apple and fig paste notes, with very precise acidity weaving in and out. Drink now. 1,931 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
Golden hued, the 2020 Chardonnay La Masia Don Miguel Vineyard is rich with ripe fruit and oak spice, including yellow flowers, vanilla spice, toast, and baked apple. Full-bodied, with ripe notes of cantaloupe, pastry cream, and lemon oil, this decadent, ripe style feels a bit more developed and lacks some freshness, so it’s prime for drinking now. (Audrey Frick)

Wolff Vineyard Old Vines
2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Chardonnay Wolff Vineyard is fabulous, something that is all the more remarkable considering the freakish year. Orange confit, pineapple, butter, apricot, tangerine and spice are all dialed up in this decidedly exotic, lush Chardonnay from Mount Eden. The 2020 is not at all subtle, but it sure is delicious. 2020 / 750 ml.
Wet stone, tropical flowers and white melon aromas make for a compelling nose on this bottling of a widely available, downright cheap Chardonnay. The palate stays clean as well, with gardenia and stone fruit flavors working in tandem. (Matt Kettmann)

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict captures all the magic of this iconic Sta. Rita Hills site. Ample, creamy and inviting, the 2020 is beautifully textured from start to finish. Apricot, lemon confit, white flowers, mint and marzipan build as the 2020 opens with a bit of air. Arnot-Roberts pulls fruit from the old-vine section of S&B, which was planted in 1971 with own-rooted vines.
