Peter Michael Winery 'Belle Cote' Chardonnay 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99981

RP96+96–98 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Feb 2023
I tasted the 2021 Chardonnay Belle Côte as a finished tank sample the day before it was bottled. From vines planted in 1990, it was matured for 12 months in 40% new French oak. It offers lush aromas of baked apples and apricots, jasmine, biscuit, nutmeg and cream with spicy, floral nuances arising as it airs in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and expansive with streaks of flint and focused acidity to balance its generous fruit. Expressive and inviting, it’s a pleasure to drink now, yet the way it transforms in the glass suggests it will also develop positively in the cellar over the next decade or more. 2,159 cases were made, and it will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)
JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
From the oldest Chardonnay vines on the property, planted in 1990, the 2021 Chardonnay Belle-Cote pours a medium yellow and has an expressive perfume of wildflowers, wet stone, and white peach. Full-bodied, this floral profile is just as pronounced and long on the palate, with a soft, silky texture and ripe notes of melon, honeysuckle, and honeyed lemon. Long and attractive, it can be enjoyed 2024–2034. (Audrey Frick)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2023
This has an impressive presence while still showing plenty of finesse to the apricot pastry, vanilla cream and orange blossom flavors, with details of nutmeg, crisp citrus and marzipan on the finish. Drink now. 2,159 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Powerful, with richness to the concentrated salted butterscotch, peach pastry and dried apricot flavors. Delivers details of spices and honeycomb, with elegant, fresh acidity weaving in and out to highlight the flavors. Drink now. 76,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

The 2021 Chardonnay (Carneros) is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper lend vibrancy to this steely, finely-cut Chardonnay from Frank Family. All the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. (Antonio Galloni)

A clean and poised chardonnay with nougat, sliced apple and pear and a hint of vanilla. Medium body. Bright acidity. Fun to drink now.

This is a beautiful wine with juicy fruit. Tile and iron undertones add an iodine note. Medium to full body and round tannins. Fresh and flavorful. Very pretty length and intensity. Hints of spice, stone and walnuts. Elegant and beautiful. Tight and structured. Drink or hold. Better after 2023.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis, from Peter Michael’s parcel in the hills of Eastern Oakville, is one of the successes of this trying vintage. Red cherry jam, game, smoke, licorice, spice and incense all meld together effortlessly. This is an especially refined wine for a sector in Oakville that seems to lean more naturally towards power. The 2017 spent 18 months in Darnajou barrels, 50% new. I would prefer to cellar the 2017 for a few years, but if enjoyed young, several hours of aeration will do wonders.
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
Juicy and winey, with a terrific core of ripe blackberry and warmed cassis flavors, laced with licorice root, sage and loam notes. Drives nicely through the finish, showing a touch of polish along the edges as the fruit ripples along. Best from 2022 through 2037. 1,450 cases made.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Feb 2020
Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc coming from Oakville AVA, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Au Paradis reveals a deep garnet-purple color and charges out of the gate with expressive notes of warm cassis, plum preserves and wild blueberries with hints chocolate mint, candied violets, black loam, truffles and charcuterie. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers bags of juicy fruit with great freshness and solid, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with laudable purity. 1,450 cases were made.

This is very perfumed with blackberry and pine-cone aromas, as well as raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins that are tight-grained. Creamy and beautiful. Currant and graphite flavors come through. Lightly chewy at the end. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Drink after 2025.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
From one of the smallest yields in the history of this Knights Valley vineyard, the 2019 Les Pavots matured in 70% new French oak. It’s a dark, concentrated effort, with straightforward aromas of black cherries, cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate, a full-bodied, plush feel on the palate and a long, velvety finish. A delicious blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, it should possess close to two decades of drinkability.

RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Feb 2023
I tasted the 2021 Chardonnay La Carrière as a finished tank sample the day before it was bottled. It comes from vines planted in 1994 on volcanic soils and was matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak. It opens soft and creamy on the nose, gaining in intensity as it blossoms to scents of matchstick, saline, Meyer lemons and wafts of lemongrass. The medium-bodied palate has a satiny texture and focused acidity to support its expansive, perfumed fruit, and its classy new oak character is already well integrated. I love this juxtaposition of concentrated flavor and shimmery, energetic acidity. 2,128 cases were made. This will be released in February 2023. (Erin Brooks)

Exquisite, with power and delicacy to the butterscotch pudding, marmalade and fresh peach flavors at the core. But this white is just getting started, showing lemon zest, fresh rosemary flowers and candied ginger notes that add complexity and length, plus litsea oil accents, vibrant acidity and a supple texture. Drink now through 2029. 2,128 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
A brilliant straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay La Carriere is fragrant with fresh lime zest, jasmine, and Williams pear. Medium to full-bodied, notes of candied green apple, green melon, and lemon curd are revealed in this fresh, lively white, which has great freshness, notable energy, and vibrant purity. Drink 2023–2032. (Audrey Frick)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice pours a deep ruby and offers loads of spiced aromas of woodsy earth, cinnamon, and red cherry. Medium-bodied, with good concentration and ripe fruit that fills the palate with notes of red plum, baking spices, and pine, it’s a clean red with fine tannins, good richness, and purity, and its finish reveals a floral component of roses, ripe wild raspberry, and fresh herbs. Drink 2025–2037. (Audrey Frick)
RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 16th Feb 2023
I tasted the 2021 Pinot Noir Le Caprice as a finished barrel sample a week before it was racked to tank and bottled. Made from destemmed grapes and matured in 40% to 50% new French oak, it has a medium ruby-purple in color and inviting scents of red cherry, cranberry sauce, cinnamon, rose petal and potpourri, offering new aromatic nuances with each return to the glass. The medium-bodied palate is silky and seamless with concentrated, spicy red fruit and a long, latent finish. It will need another 3–5 years in bottle to continue its development and show at its best. 1,083 cases were made. This will be released in February of 2023. (Erin Brooks)

VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Bright and energetic, with soaring aromatics, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots is utterly captivating from the first taste. A rush of blackberry, crushed rocks, graphite, rose petal, mint, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds in the glass. All the pedigree of Knights Valley is on display. The 2017 is 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. It spent 18 months in Taransaud and Darnajou barrels. The team opted to bulk out 40% of the wine, so production is down sharply. The wine that was bottled, well, it’s pretty special.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th Feb 2020
Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Les Pavots comes from Knights Valley AVA. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with vivacious notes of crushed black berries, Black Forest cake, blueberry compote and blackcurrant cordial with touches of camphor, lavender, tapenade and cigar box plus hints of mocha and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and savory. 2,050 cases were made.

The 2020 Chardonnay Belle Côte, matured for 12 months in about 40% new French oak, explodes with singular aromas of ginger, lemongrass and Meyer lemon with streaks of flint and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is just as intense, offering highly concentrated fruit, seamless acidity, expansive, spicy flavors and a finish that goes on and on. Ultra concentrated and perfumed, the Belle Côte is especially expressive this vintage. 2,782 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
RP95+95–97 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2022
More linear than la Carriere or Mon Plaisir this vintage, the 2020 Chardonnay Belle Cote boasts narcissus-like florals, white peaches, lime zest and toasted almond on the nose, while the palate is medium to full-bodied and lush yet long and focused, with just a hint of mocha on the finish.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2022
