From the Producer

This golden-hued vintage strikes the most beautiful balance between freshness and tropical lushness. Aromas of lemon peel and melon captivate the nose, while silky pear, peach blossom and melon flavors cascade across a palate that is at once creamy and lifted. The finish is lively and bright, with juicy acidity, whispers of lightly toasted oak and a refreshing minerality.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

From a small 8-acre vineyard that was planted in 1997, the 2021 Chardonnay Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard is another juicy, supple, elegant 2021 white from this team. Giving up plenty of honeyed pear and ripe citrus and lemon-like fruit as well as subtle herbal and mineral nuances, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, bright, juicy acidity, and a great finish. As with the other whites in the lineup, the freshness and purity are top-notch. It already offers pleasure and should keep for 5–7 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Rich, ripe and soft, this luxurious wine bathes in butter, vanilla and pear syrup flavors that saturate the palate and linger on the finish. It occupies the plump and creamy end of the Chardonnay spectrum. (Jim Gordon)

The straw-colored 2021 Chardonnay La Storia is a full-bodied white with lightly flinty aromas up front and notes of fresh pineapple, peach, and baking spices. Rounded and silky, with a juicy fruit and floral profile, it has notes of ripe melon and a good clean finish with a hint of lemon curd. It’s an attractive wine to enjoy over the next several years. This is a structured, earthy and herbal red that shows stone-like texture and grip. Sharp, tangy red fruit complements a core of rounded, lengthy tannin, dust and dark cherry, leading to a finishing accent of cedar that lasts for days.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
Juicy, ripe and forward, with a fun burst of plum sauce and blackberry preserve flavors mixed with notes of red licorice and a toasted vanilla. Offers a rounded, polished feel through the finish. Drink now through 2030. 3,100 cases made.

This has very strong blue-fruit character with a softer, smoothly rendered palate texture that offers real drinkability and attractive, appealing style. Fresh and fleshy through the finish. Drink or hold.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch comes from a site in Yountville and is similarly purple-colored, with a deeper bouquet of cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, dark chocolate, violets, and graphite. As with the Hayne Vineyard, it’s pretty, elegant, and silky on the palate, with medium to full body, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It will drink well for 2+ decades. (Jeb Dunnuck)
