From the Producer

This golden-hued vintage strikes the most beautiful balance between freshness and tropical lushness. Aromas of lemon peel and melon captivate the nose, while silky pear, peach blossom and melon flavors cascade across a palate that is at once creamy and lifted. The finish is lively and bright, with juicy acidity, whispers of lightly toasted oak and a refreshing minerality.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2021 Chardonnay Santa Barbara County is the first appellation-wide bottling from Chanin. It offers aromas of lemon cream, saline and crushed shell on the nose, and the light-bodied palate is bright, fresh and silky with youthful lemon and pear flavors complemented by bass tones of beeswax, and it finishes with great length. Powerful, with richness to the concentrated salted butterscotch, peach pastry and dried apricot flavors. Delivers details of spices and honeycomb, with elegant, fresh acidity weaving in and out to highlight the flavors. Drink now. 76,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

The 2021 Chardonnay (Carneros) is soft, open-knit and very easy to like. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper lend vibrancy to this steely, finely-cut Chardonnay from Frank Family. All the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. (Antonio Galloni)

A clean and poised chardonnay with nougat, sliced apple and pear and a hint of vanilla. Medium body. Bright acidity. Fun to drink now.

A strong showing of black cherry and licorice lead the way to a soft, supple midpalate in this wine that’s aged in French oak, half new and half once-used. Secondary notes of nutmeg, clove and coffee permeate through the structure and weight of the palate. Enjoy from 2028–2038.
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, February 2, 2021
High-toned with lots of ripe, rich plums and hints of dates and chocolate. It’s full-bodied and layered with gorgeous fruit and a long, flavorful finish. A little tight now, but will improve by 2023.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2020
Juicy, with plum and blackberry notes that meld nicely with hints of sassafras and bay. Lightly brambly along the edges, with a nice tug of earth through the middle, leaving a loamy echo amidst the fruit and savory notes on the finish. Best from 2021 through 2031. 4,032 cases made.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2020
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon John C. Sullenger Vineyard is produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, delivering vivacious scents of black raspberries, mulberries and warm red and black currants plus hints of spice cake, bouquet garni and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers juicy black fruits with a spicy undercurrent and soft tannins, finishing on a lingering cinnamon stick note.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2020
This comes from the estate vineyard surrounding the Nickel & Nickel winery, on the east side of Highway 29. It has the density and richness of classic Oakville cabernet, with lush black-cherry flavors, lightly amaro-like bitterness and dark-chocolate tannins lending an umami bridge to beef stroganoff.

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/4/2022
I loved the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch. This Yountville beauty has a great nose of pure cassis and blackcurrant fruits as well textbook Cabernet notes of lead pencil shavings, chalky mineral, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and perfectly balanced, it has fine tannins and the class to evolve for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 15th Sep 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch comes from a parcel in the center of the valley, but it’s one that is relatively rocky and well drained, according to winemaker Joe Harden. Apparently, the vineyard is now owned by Thomas Keller. Delicate hints of sage and mint accent black cherries and blueberries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is defined by softly dusty tannins and ample, mouthwatering length. (Joe Czerwinski)
JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, December 5, 2021
Stewed blackcurrants, cassis, smoked meat, toffee and walnuts on the nose. Full-bodied with fine, sleek tannins and fresh acidity. Succulent and polished with a juicy, flavorful finish. Drink from 2023.
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2022
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch offers good upfront intensity, but it is ultimately just a bit lean. There is good energy though. Dark cherry, tobacco, licorice, leather and dried herbs build with a bit of time, and yet the 2019 remains a touch nervous and compact. Perhaps it will flesh out more with some time.

WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2022
With a plushness on the palate, this varietal wine offers spicy undertones of cedar, sage and oak, with woody tannin and thick, concentrated black fruit. Intense throughout, the berry richness is contrasted by flecks of iron and crushed rock. Enjoy 2029–2039.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2022
Very expressive, with a rich, polished beam of cassis, violet, plum sauce and gently singed vanilla cruising through with quiet authority. Shows a solid bolt of graphite on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2035. 1,450 cases made.

An elegant, open-knit version, with bitter plum and cherry notes lined with light bergamot and red tea hints. There’s a dash of cedar through the finish. Drink now through 2030. 2,519 cases made.
