Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

This wine is fresh, bright with aromas of yellow apple, pear, honeysuckle and vanilla cream on the nose. The midpalate has flavors of grilled orange slices, baked pear and green apple, with wildflower honey wafting through the mineral, dry finish. Pair with spicy calamari.

The 2022 Chardonnay Luminus is a rich, dynamic white. Orchard fruit, white flowers, mint and a kiss of French oak are front and center. There’s terrific texture and depth. Lifted floral overtones add character to the finish. (Antonio Galloni)

This wine is rich, opulent with aromas of ripe green apple, peach, mulled spice, toasty vanilla cream and orange zest on the nose. The flavors on the palate are yellow apple, allspice and white grapefruit that transform into orange sherbet, mineral and a long, silky finish. Pair with weekday meals. (Tonya Pitts)

Entirely barrel fermented in French oak, the 2021 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is a bit sunnier, with ripe spiced orange, apricot, and melon aromas. Full-bodied, it lends more depth and a sunny feel on the palate, with notes of orange oil, beeswax, and vanilla. It’s a more assertive style in this lineup, with balanced richness and a good finish. Drink 2023–2028. (Audrey Frick)

A brilliant silver/green-tinged hue, the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County comes from multiple sites in Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Dry Creek, and the Russian River Valley and is fermented both in barrel as well as in stainless steel. Aromatic with a fresh, tropical perfume of guava, melon, chive, and grapefruit, it offers an elegant and delicately rounded feel, with a kiss of candied citrus and its floral perfume lasting on the finish. It’s a very charming wine to enjoy over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

This wine is a beautiful, vibrant gold in the glass, conveying delicate floral aromatics on the nose. On the palate, very ripe pear, marzipan and sweet cinnamon emerge. There’s also a potent, perfumy dried-floral component that some drinkers will love. (Tom Capo)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Chardonnay Kelli Ann Vineyard was barrel fermented and aged 15 months in 35% new French oak. It comes from vines off Eastside Road on the banks of the Russian River, planted in 1989. It opens to scents of yellow apple, salted almonds, crushed stone, lemon peel and meringue with a classy framing of sweet spice. The palate is light to medium-bodied and delicately intense, with appealing citrusy flavor layers and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long on a honeyed note. 1,500 cases produced.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 7/1/2020
This delightfully bright, balanced wine tastes of freshly squeezed Meyer lemon and mango, with a breadth of texture and weight on the palate. Well made, it has ample acidity to keep it moving through a complex corridor of oak and supple tannin.

A youthful ruby with a purple tinge, the 2021 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is ripe with black raspberry liqueur, cola spice, and purple flowers. Full-bodied, with a crunchy, more angular structure, it offers sweet tannins, ripe red berries and wild herbs, a gravelly texture, and a bit of toasted cedar. Drink 2024-2030. (Audrey Frick)
