When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

2023 / 750 ml.
Made by Greg Brewer and already bottled, the 2023 Chardonnay comes from the Mission Mills Vineyard just outside of Los Alamos. Its vivid medium gold hue is followed by a vibrant nose of salted citrus, tangerine, exotic flowers, and subtle spice. Medium-bodied, pure, rounded, and beautifully balanced, it has plenty of power and density, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This impeccably made Chardonnay should be snatched up by readers, as it competes with wines at two to three times the price. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2022 Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) is stellar. Powerful and textured, the 2022 is super-expressive from the very first taste. Even with very short élevage and blocked malolactic fermentation, the 2022 possesses tons of depth. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and tangerine oil are all beautifully amplified. All of this fruit is from Mission Hills in Los Alamos. Greg Brewer did a fabulous job with the 2022. With a production of 17,000 cases and a price of just $25, the Diatom Chardonnay is both delicious and a tremendous value. Bravo. (Antonio Galloni)
This stunning wine leaps out of the glass, with concentrated flavors of white peach, quince and pineapple, plus floral accents of orange blossoms and lemon curd. Finishes with mouthwatering acidity, a note of crunchy sea salt minerality and a whiff of lemon verbena. Drink now. 23,000 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Dark red cherries, spices, licorice and plum notes abound in Kendall Jackson’s 2012 Pinot Noir Grand Reserve. Drink this soft, racy, beautifully textured Pinot over the next few years. This is another terrific showing.
The 2012 Pinot Noir Grand Reserve, a Monterey and Santa Barbara cross-county blend, spent nine months in 92% French oak (40% new). It is a much earthier, foresty style of Pinot Noir displaying a composty, autumnal, vegetative character along with pretty cherry fruit, spices and herbs. Medium-bodied and well-made, it should be drunk over the next several years.
