When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 4th May 2023
Roughly half barrel fermented, the 2021 Chardonnay Carneros offers up hints of pencilly oak on the nose, accenting pear, melon and pineapple notes. It’s medium-bodied, plump and slightly creamy on the palate, then finishes crisp, on a more citrusy note. Enjoy it over the next couple of years. (Joe Czerwinski)
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2023
Well-concentrated and ripe-tasting, this full-bodied wine feels soft and smooth in texture while delivering poached pear and peach syrup flavors. (Jim Gordon)

Rich, ripe and soft, this luxurious wine bathes in butter, vanilla and pear syrup flavors that saturate the palate and linger on the finish. It occupies the plump and creamy end of the Chardonnay spectrum. (Jim Gordon)
JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
The straw-colored 2021 Chardonnay La Storia is a full-bodied white with lightly flinty aromas up front and notes of fresh pineapple, peach, and baking spices. Rounded and silky, with a juicy fruit and floral profile, it has notes of ripe melon and a good clean finish with a hint of lemon curd. It’s an attractive wine to enjoy over the next several years. Cooked apple with lemon rind and bitter orange undertones. Medium to full body. Slightly phenolic in texture. Floral and lilac notes at the end. Firm. Drink now. (James Suckling)
JD9292 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2023
The 2021 Chardonnay Luminus comes from the Oak Knoll region and was barrel-fermented and aged in 10% new barrels. The goal for this cuvée is a more vibrant, fresher style, and they succeed admirably, with lots of green citrus, honeysuckle, and chalky minerality giving way to a medium-bodied, focused Chardonnay. It’s not lean, however, and has beautiful fruit. (Jeb Dunnuck)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023
Aromatic and intense, with preserved lemon, orange blossom, fresh lime and crunchy sea salt flavors, revealing Fuji apple and tangerine notes on the fresh, vibrant finish. Drink now. 990 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

Focused aromas of white flower, cashew cream and coconut flesh doused in lime juice show on the nose of this bottling from the historic estate. Bright acidity and earthy minerality kick off the palate, slicing through the flavors of cut apple and lime. (Matt Kettmann)

Ripe nose, full of spiced lemon, pineapple and a savory, leesy undertone. Bright and full-bodied for a chardonnay, showing some elegant citrus flavors in the mid-palate, with fine lees and a subtle, grippy finish. Drink now. (James Suckling)
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2023
The 2021 Estate Grown Chardonnay Mitsuko’s Vineyard kicks off fermentation in tank before being transferred into barrels for the second half of the primary fermentation (and malolactic fermentation). Featuring scents of tangerine, sweet corn and vanilla (30% new French oak is employed), it’s a bit eccentric but flavorful and reasonably intense. It’s medium to full-bodied, plump and generous on the palate, with an appealing touch of baking spices on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

Even with an appreciable volume (11,300 cases), all of the 2021 Chardonnay Mannequin was barrel fermented and matured, spending eight months in 23% new French oak. Blended primarily from Santa Barbara and Sonoma sources (there is some Napa fruit, as well as 2.6% Viognier), it’s toasty on the nose, boasting notes of roasted cashew, grilled peaches and vanilla. It’s full-bodied, lush and easy to drink, with tropical fruit and pineapple on the finish. Enjoy it on the young side. (Joe Czerwinski)

Boysenberry and açaí berry fruit gives this a slightly exotic profile, but it’s finely stitched with apple wood, sassafras and singed anise notes to keep it honest. The polished finish lets a chaparral note chime through the flashy fruit. This should have fans for sure. Drink now through 2036. 66,186 cases made. (James Molesworth)

Lastly, the 2021 Lion Tamer Red Blend is an eclectic blend of 61% Malbec, 14% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 9% Merlot, and a splash of Petit Verdot. It’s a sweetly fruited, forward, pleasure-bent beauty with lots of blueberry and raspberry fruit, medium to full body, sweet tannins, and some chocolaty, spicy, exotic flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s a big mouthful of ripe, pure fruit and perfect for enjoying over the coming 4–6 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

RP96+96+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
Blended of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon The Lion has a very deep garnet-purple color and nose of baked blueberries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with a wonderfully spicy undercurrent featuring Chinese five spice, black pepper and fenugreek with touches of cigar box and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound at this youthful stage, it has a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and spicy. 158 cases were made. Forget this one in your cellar for 3–4 years and drink it over the next 15+.
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2017
The top of the producer’s pecking order, this estate-grown red employs 17% Malbec, a house specialty, which adds richness and grip to the structure. Leathery tannins, clove and black pepper ride along layers of red cherry and cassis, finishing fully integrated and powerful in weight.

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Sep 2019
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Mount Veeder aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. No 2017 vintage of this wine will be made. Deep garnet-purple colored, it delivers a very serious nose of baked plums, crème de cassis, dried mulberries and dark chocolate with nuances of tapenade, chargrill, licorice and menthol with a waft of tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house with a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness supporting the taut, muscular black fruit, finishing on a provocative mineral note. 3,000 cases produced.
WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2019
Thick, herbal and earthy, this is a fantastic expression of the appellation. Firm tannins show structure and measured richness around thickets of black cherry, dark chocolate and earthy sage, finishing on a hint of black pepper.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 4, 2020
This shows steeped blackberry, plum and black currant fruit set against a backdrop of warm tar, smoldering charcoal and sweet tobacco notes. A tarry edge and dark fruit meld beautifully through the finish due to well-embedded acidity. A textbook mountain Cabernet. Best from 2022 through 2035. 3,405 cases made.

Composed of 50% Malbec, 23% Zinfandel and 11% Petite Sirah with smaller parts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Mourvèdre, the 2015 Proprietary Red The Lion Tamer is scented of warm blackcurrants, preserved plums and dark chocolate with touches of pencil shavings, dried Provence herbs and underbrush. SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2022
Gorgeously lush and seductive up front, showing açaí, blueberry and boysenberry compote flavors that are hefty but glide through, with anise, apple wood and fruitcake details that seemingly sparkle as it all cruises through the finish. Features a perfectly embedded graphite spine underneath it all, which should let this version evolve slowly in the cellar. Delivers a flashy display of fruit carried off with aplomb. Best from 2023 through 2038. 693 cases made. (James Molesworth)
WE9494 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2022
Supple with underlying tension and complexity, this wine, blended with 16% Malbec, is brimming and bright in cassis, red cherry and plum. Dried herb, cedar and a hint of sage accent the edges of the concentrated core of enduring richness.
