This is an approachable, majority stainless-steel fermented white that is well made and aged in French oak, with a richness of vanilla bean, crème brûlée and oak. Serviceable, it is made in a robust style with floral flourishes that appeal. (Virginie Boone)

Napa Valley is California's -- and America's -- most famous and celebrated wine district. Located north of San Francisco, Napa Valley is most famous for its world-class Cabernets and Chardonnays. The region's acclaim officially took off following a 1976 tasting in Paris when renowned judges chose a Napa Chardonnay and Cabernet over top French wines made from the same grapes.
Most wineries in the region produce either a Chardonnay or a Cabernet, and usually it's both. Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel are also grown with success in Napa Valley. You'll likely recognize the names of some of the viticultural areas within Napa Valley, including St. Helena, Stag's Leap and Carneros.

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

2019 / 750 ml.
From a vineyard owned by the Martinelli family and planted to Old Wente cuttings from Hyde Vineyard, this wine opens in a quiet nose of apple blossom and stone. Creamy, with substance and structure, it is floral, earthy and citrusy, with a taste of Key lime.
Robust and juicy, with plenty of spicy nutmeg notes and a touch of roasted salted almond to complement the core of lemony citrus and Fuji apple flavors. Drink now through 2036. 624 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

We have notes of Gavin Chanin’s Los Alamos Vineyard chardonnays from nearly his first vintage, and there are themes, even specific words, that are common through the years — how the wines invariably feel open, transparent, expansive, wide. There is something about this place that Chanin was born to channel, and he has the good sense to stay out of its way. The ’19 is true to its forbears, perhaps displaying a bit more structure, more vertical assembly against which this wine’s cool and gentle flavors — caramel, pear, lees, a spray of coast fog — assemble. Buy a few bottles of this wine to cellar and to contemplate as you uncork them over the course of years.
Boasting a killer bouquet of reductive stone fruits, lemon, chalky minerality, and toast, the 2019 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard is medium-bodied and has flawless balance as well as clean, integrated acidity. Brought up in just 15% new French oak, it’s unfortunate that there are a scant 485 cases produced. It’s beautiful today, yet I see no reason it won’t keep for 7–8 years if stored properly. (Jeb Dunnuck)
The 2019 Chardonnay Los Alamos Vineyard is a brilliant wine. Freshly cut flowers, mint, almond, lemon peel and light tropical notes all grace the Los Alamos Chardonnay. A wine of transparency and nuance, the 2019 is positively stellar. Bright saline notes extend the finish effortlessly. Superb.
Strong aromas of struck stone and iron tailings meet with apple peels, melon and a hint of nut on the complex nose of this bottling. Tart apple flavors run into macadamia nut on the palate, which is framed in a firm tension.

Cabernet Sauvignon
2014 / 750 ml.
Blended of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon The Lion has a very deep garnet-purple color and nose of baked blueberries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with a wonderfully spicy undercurrent featuring Chinese five spice, black pepper and fenugreek with touches of cigar box and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and tightly wound at this youthful stage, it has a rock-solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and spicy. 158 cases were made. Forget this one in your cellar for 3–4 years and drink it over the next 15+.
The top of the producer’s pecking order, this estate-grown red employs 17% Malbec, a house specialty, which adds richness and grip to the structure. Leathery tannins, clove and black pepper ride along layers of red cherry and cassis, finishing fully integrated and powerful in weight.

Composed of 81% Cabernet, 16% Malbec and a dollop a Petit Verdot, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Mt. Veeder has a very deep purple-black color and nose of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and plums with hints of cedar chest, dried Provence herbs, rose petals and menthol with a hint of rare beef. Full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant in the mouth, it has tons of energy framed by grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and earthy.
A powerful, dense wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mount Veeder) packs plenty of mountain structure and complexity to play off the rich, dense fruit. Espresso, mocha, black cherry, new leather and spice add myriad shades of nuance to a wine endowed with real character.
Juicy black cherry and grippy oak are the stars of the show in this delicious red wine, softened by the addition of 16% Malbec. Elongated tannins support the leathery texture as highlights of cedar and sage play on.

Boysenberry and açaí berry fruit gives this a slightly exotic profile, but it’s finely stitched with apple wood, sassafras and singed anise notes to keep it honest. The polished finish lets a chaparral note chime through the flashy fruit. This should have fans for sure. Drink now through 2036. 66,186 cases made. (James Molesworth)
From their Pope Valley vineyard, this wine is rich and relaxed, warm with oak spices and broad in baked cherries and dark plums. Aged in both French and American barrels for a supple, soft effect and lingering finish. (James Suckling)

Napa Valley Red Wine
2021 / 750 ml.
Lastly, the 2021 Lion Tamer Red Blend is an eclectic blend of 61% Malbec, 14% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah, 9% Merlot, and a splash of Petit Verdot. It’s a sweetly fruited, forward, pleasure-bent beauty with lots of blueberry and raspberry fruit, medium to full body, sweet tannins, and some chocolaty, spicy, exotic flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s a big mouthful of ripe, pure fruit and perfect for enjoying over the coming 4–6 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A fruity cabernet with currant, black-cherry and berry aromas and flavors. Medium-to full-bodied with soft tannins and a juicy finish. Yummy now. Drink or hold.
Blended with small amounts of Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec, this likable pour offers perfumed red fruit and bright acidity within a full-bodied, integrated core of smooth texture. A background of herbal notes complements the dense black cherry and blackberry core.
A polished, direct style, with warmed plum and blackberry fruit laced with cocoa and tobacco notes. A rounded edge on the finish makes this accessible now, but there’s enough for brief cellaring. Drink now through 2025. 91,500 cases made.

Cabernet Sauvignon
2013 / 750 ml.
The last bottled wine I tasted is also spectacular, and rivals the finest wines ever made at Hess — the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate The Lion. It is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot and obviously a cuvée meant to be the best Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine they produce. They didn’t make it in 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012, so this is the first vintage in some time. Inky purple in color it offers notes of lead pencil shavings, white flowers, blueberries and blackberries. The Mt. Veeder hallmark of blue fruits and white flowers definitely comes through in this supple, opaque purple wine that is full-bodied, built like a skyscraper and super-impressive. If this is what we can continue to expect from Hess Collection, they are on a quick, express elevator to the top. There are 431 cases of this gorgeous wine.
A new, high-end offering from this producer, this wine is made to celebrate and luxuriate in the appellation, which it does in its ying-yang of dark chocolate and cedar. Bright acidity uplifts a soft, creamy texture and firm, subtle tannin, allowing the blackberry bramble to speak.
Though big and intense, this is also polished, revealing a sense of refinement and elegance. Offers a core of licorice-scented blackberry, wild berry, cedar, herb, mocha and underbrush flavors. Ends with well-integrated tannins. Drink now through 2030. 431 cases made.
