Officially established in 1982, the Finger Lakes region has a storied history of wine production in New York State and is recognized the world over. The deep glacially formed lakes offer sublime growing conditions thanks to the sloping hillsides and moderating effect the lakes have on the temperature of the surrounding area.
The main growing regions are centered around Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake (which each have their own AVAs) but quality wine is being made throughout the region. Riesling is the belle of the ball in the Finger Lakes (oftentimes being compared to the Rieslings of Germany) but success has been had with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and others.
Region / New York
Seeing as our store is located in the midst of New York's wine regions, we have a special affinity for New York wines. And so should you! New York is now producing some of the world's best Rieslings and Pinot Noirs, and there are lots of other terrific wines made from grapes like Catawba, Niagara, Cabernet Franc and others being produced here, as well. Every year, the quality, reputation, and demand for New York wines continue to soar. What are you waiting for? Uncork New York!

An elegant, cool-climate chardonnay with excellent integration of toasty oak with creaminess from lees contact and a hint of minerality. Nearly all the fruit came from the White Springs vineyard. Still yo youthful! This was aged 60% in barrique casks and 40% in 2,000 liter casks of neutral oak with about one-eighth new oak. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Dry Riesling, colloquially known as the “classic” dry Riesling, comes in with only half a gram of residual sugar and 8.34 of total acidity, plus 10.58% alcohol. That’s a pretty crisp wine on paper and in fact. Winemaker Jordan Harris said that beginning with the 2020 vintage, “a lot of our wines have started a little shift stylistically… So, the dry is aimed at being truly dry. Will there be years where the acid level means stopping with a couple grams, maybe, but that hasn’t been the case for a couple years.” In bottle about six weeks when seen, this didn’t seem to show any bottle shock, but it sure was unevolved. That’s not going to be a problem that is fixed in a few more weeks. Rather, I’d say this could use a year or two in the bottle. There are plenty of sharp edges here and there is very little relief from them, as neither the sugar nor the fruit balances the acidity at this juncture. That was true even after I let it air out and warm up a bit. That said, I still rather liked this, and it may well develop favorably. If you open it now (and probably well into the future), it is the type of wine that requires a food pairing. It won’t do well on its own. In terms of aging and evaluation, let’s be a little conservative just now. It has some questions to answer. Put it away until next year, at least. (Mark Squires)

The 2021 Semi-Sweet Riesling comes in with 34 grams of residual sugar, 7.5 of total acidity and 8.3% alcohol. You won’t mistake this for the Semi-Dry, since this comes with a blue-tinted bottle. This has good acidity to go with its sugar, but it is certainly well off dry, if you’re wondering. It’s easily the friendliest of the regular Rieslings from the winery this year (including the Dry and Semi-Dry), showing a touch of sugar around the edges to go with a fresh demeanor. This is a nice performance at this level for this vintage. It might be a step short of distinguished, but in the price category, there is plenty of bang for the buck. It should hold well throughout most of this decade. (Mark Squires)

This fruit-forward red shows ripe tones of black raspberry and cranberry, with hints of cracked pepper hiding beneath. Slightly astringent tannins stick out against the fruit on the palate, with mild acidity lending a bit of balance.

The 2021 Semi-Dry Riesling has 21 grams per liter of residual sugar, 8.1 of total acidity and 10.24% alcohol. A much friendlier wine than the Dry Riesling in this report, this still seems quite dry perceptibly. If you want a dry Riesling, this might be a better choice than the one labeled “Dry Riesling.” This is better balanced with fewer uncertainties but still dry, clean and classic on the finish. This, too, could benefit from a little cellaring, and it might then overachieve for its price category and level. It’s a fine performance for its level, with some upside potential. (Mark Squires)
