This full-bodied and rich-tasting wine blends subtle oak and butter notes with generous almond, poached pear and peach flavors. It shows good complexity and nuance on the palate and finish. (Jim Gordon)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2020 Chardornay Bien Nacido Vineyard is delicate, floral and nicely lifted. Hints of lemon peel, savory herbs and mint are nicely delineated. In this tasting, the Bien Nacido comes across as a bit austere and lacking the mid-palate textural and flavor profile that are typical of this site. The 2020 is an attractive wine, but it feels a bit skeletal today. (Antonio Galloni)

Effortless, with a silky, seamless body supporting airy lemon meringue, ripe pear and juicy Fuji apple notes. Reveals hints of honeycomb and orange blossoms, with appealing, almost chalky earthy minerality adding a nice punctuation point on the graceful finish. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
The 2020 Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1980. It was matured in 35% new French oak for 12 months and finished with an additional six months in stainless steel. The nose is shy to begin, taking time to offer peach, citrus blossom and beeswax perfume. The medium-bodied palate pairs expansive, gently honeyed fruit with focused acidity that drives the layered finish. Intense and bright at this youthful stage, enjoy it over the next 3–5 years. 350 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)

Aromas of dried orange peel, lemon grass and hay. Medium-bodied with lovely complexity. Herbs and dried citrus meld together, with a hint of white tea adding intrigue. Well composed. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
A non-malolactic wine—made in the spirit of the Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that impressed at the Paris tasting in 1976—Grgich’s 2020 Estate Grown Chardonnay features gentle toasty notes, a hint of roasted hazelnut, plus bright pineapple and citrus fruit. It’s medium-bodied, zesty and refreshing, with a long, clean finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2020 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict captures all the magic of this iconic Sta. Rita Hills site. Ample, creamy and inviting, the 2020 is beautifully textured from start to finish. Apricot, lemon confit, white flowers, mint and marzipan build as the 2020 opens with a bit of air. Arnot-Roberts pulls fruit from the old-vine section of S&B, which was planted in 1971 with own-rooted vines.

Wolff Vineyard Old Vines
2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Chardonnay Wolff Vineyard is fabulous, something that is all the more remarkable considering the freakish year. Orange confit, pineapple, butter, apricot, tangerine and spice are all dialed up in this decidedly exotic, lush Chardonnay from Mount Eden. The 2020 is not at all subtle, but it sure is delicious.
