When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Vibrant and effusive, with energetic lime sherbet, lemon oil, citron and tangerine notes at the core. Shows aromatic details of lemon verbena, lemongrass and lemon basil, with a touch of green tea and white pepper on the fresh, juicy frame. Drink now. 3,981 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)

This bracing, tangy, spicy wine boasts aromas of butter and toast, flavors of poached pears, vanilla and wood char, while a tingly, slightly gripping texture adds a crisp finish. Made from cool, coastal vineyards, it needs time to mellow in mouthfeel and gain more subtlety. Best from 2026. (Jim Gordon)

Sourced entirely from Charles Ranch and pouring a pale straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview is fresh and lifted with aromas of salted lime, sea spray, agave, and green pineapple. On the palate, this medium-bodied white is spritely with notes of crunchy fresh fruit and has a silky soft, stony texture to round out its linear drive. It’s fresh with vibrant energy and ripe fruit, white peach, and fresh flowers. Drink it over the next 6–8 years. (Audrey Frick)

Fermented in concrete and then aged in neutral oak, this value-minded white is impressive. Bright and fresh in good acidity, it has light layers of lemon and pineapple that deliver plenty of flavor in an elegant package. (Virginie Boone)

The 2021 Chardonnay Santa Barbara County is the first appellation-wide bottling from Chanin. It offers aromas of lemon cream, saline and crushed shell on the nose, and the light-bodied palate is bright, fresh and silky with youthful lemon and pear flavors complemented by bass tones of beeswax, and it finishes with great length. The 2021 Chardonnay Estate is terrific, with ripe tangerine and citrus notes as well as minty herb, flowers, and a touch of chalky minerality. It’s nicely balanced, has good mid-palate depth, medium body, and a lengthy finish. It would be a great introduction to the quality and style of this notable estate. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Rich and succulent, with fleshy notes of peach preserves, pear and mango. Juicy, firm accents of lemon blossom are kept in balance by savory details of white tea and a toasty, spicy note that lingers on the finish. Drink now. 9,700 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
JD8989 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 7/21/2023
Ripe with tropical perfume, the 2021 Chardonnay Estate pours a youthful yellow/silver hue and displays notes of jasmine, tangerine, and quince. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate, it packs in expansive notes of ripe melon, honeyed citrus, and loads of flowers. It’s a blousy style of white but has a clean finish. Drink it over the next couple of years. (Audrey Frick)

The 2021 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce is a classic Stephen Hansel wine. It offers notable richness but also a great deal of transparency. Hansel blends two variations of Wente Clone Chardonnay (Hyde and Hudson) with some clone 76 for his Cuvée Alyce, a Chardonnay that exudes class. (Antonio Galloni)
