When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Bright acidity washes flavors of crisp apple, creamy lemon, grapefruit zest and wet stone through the mouth into an impressively long finish. This Chardonnay is as much about freshness and energy as it is purity and restraint. The use of French oak offers a touch of spice and texture for another layer of interest through the finish. This is another deft punch from this brand, starting with aromas of chalk, lychee, poached pear and honeysuckle. That chalky tension holds firm through the tropical notes of pineapple and lychee on the palate. (Matt Kettmann)

California Chardonnay
2021 / 750 ml.

Even with an appreciable volume (11,300 cases), all of the 2021 Chardonnay Mannequin was barrel fermented and matured, spending eight months in 23% new French oak. Blended primarily from Santa Barbara and Sonoma sources (there is some Napa fruit, as well as 2.6% Viognier), it’s toasty on the nose, boasting notes of roasted cashew, grilled peaches and vanilla. It’s full-bodied, lush and easy to drink, with tropical fruit and pineapple on the finish. Enjoy it on the young side. (Joe Czerwinski)

The 2021 Chardonnay H. Klopp Vineyard, from vines planted in classic Goldridge soils, is bursting with alluring, layered aromas: quince paste, honey and white peach are complemented by accents of roasted almonds and graham cracker, and the palate matches that intensity with its highly concentrated, honeyed flavors. All that flavor is supported by a spine of vibrant acidity, and a touch of textural grip drives a very long finish. This is so delicious! 300 cases were made. (Erin Brooks)
The 2021 Chardonnay H. Klopp Vineyard is a very pretty, understated wine. Orchard fruit, ginger, white flowers, mint and chamomile are all nicely lifted. The nuanced Chardonnay is quite attractive. This is an especially acid-driven style, and I find it a bit austere today. (Antonio Galloni)

Focused aromas of white flower, cashew cream and coconut flesh doused in lime juice show on the nose of this bottling from the historic estate. Bright acidity and earthy minerality kick off the palate, slicing through the flavors of cut apple and lime. (Matt Kettmann)
