Roughly half barrel fermented, the 2021 Chardonnay Carneros offers up hints of pencilly oak on the nose, accenting pear, melon and pineapple notes. It’s medium-bodied, plump and slightly creamy on the palate, then finishes crisp, on a more citrusy note. Enjoy it over the next couple of years. (Joe Czerwinski)
Well-concentrated and ripe-tasting, this full-bodied wine feels soft and smooth in texture while delivering poached pear and peach syrup flavors. (Jim Gordon)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

The 2021 Chardonnay Santa Barbara County is the first appellation-wide bottling from Chanin. It offers aromas of lemon cream, saline and crushed shell on the nose, and the light-bodied palate is bright, fresh and silky with youthful lemon and pear flavors complemented by bass tones of beeswax, and it finishes with great length. Vibrant and effusive, with energetic lime sherbet, lemon oil, citron and tangerine notes at the core. Shows aromatic details of lemon verbena, lemongrass and lemon basil, with a touch of green tea and white pepper on the fresh, juicy frame. Drink now. 3,981 cases made. (MaryAnn Worobiec)
This bracing, tangy, spicy wine boasts aromas of butter and toast, flavors of poached pears, vanilla and wood char, while a tingly, slightly gripping texture adds a crisp finish. Made from cool, coastal vineyards, it needs time to mellow in mouthfeel and gain more subtlety. Best from 2026. (Jim Gordon)
Sourced entirely from Charles Ranch and pouring a pale straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview is fresh and lifted with aromas of salted lime, sea spray, agave, and green pineapple. On the palate, this medium-bodied white is spritely with notes of crunchy fresh fruit and has a silky soft, stony texture to round out its linear drive. It’s fresh with vibrant energy and ripe fruit, white peach, and fresh flowers. Drink it over the next 6–8 years. (Audrey Frick)

Extremely focused and energetic nose of sliced limes and Meyer lemons with lemongrass. Some stone and hints of flint. Full-bodied with superb density and structure and phenolics that you can feel. It goes on for minutes. Slightly chewy at the end. From Wente clones planted in 1974. Better in three or four years. (James Suckling)
The 2021 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is a very pretty, understated wine. Crushed rocks, flowers, mint and white pepper give the Ritchie gorgeous aromatic presence. This is the most ethereal, delicate Chardonnay in the range. I would prefer to see a bit more flesh in the mid-palate. (Antonio Galloni)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgous. Bright and vibrant, the 2019 offers a compelling mix of inky red fruit, blood orange and exotic spice, all in a style that marries richness with energy. In that sense, it is a super-classic 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet. (Antonio Galloni)

Primarily from the family’s Saint Helena estate vineyard, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc offers up some pungent hints of boxwood to go with more tropical notions of guava, fig and grapefruit. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, streamlined and clean, with a crisp, mouthwatering finish and hints of green apple. (Joe Czerwinski)
