Catena Alta Chardonnay 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97168

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The textbook barrel-fermented 2019 Catena Alta Chardonnay was produced in 500-liter barrels with wild yeasts, and the élevage was in those same barrels with lees and lasted for 14 months. It has an expressive and characterful nose that combines notes of dry herbs, white flowers and fruit. It’s elegant with good integration of the oak and has great freshness and very good acidity. 90,000 bottles were filled in May 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Where It's From

Region / Mendoza

View more wines from Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's biggest wine region, and with a footprint that spans a diverse geography, it's able to produce a wide array of wines. Chief amongst them are Argentina's ever-popular Malbecs, but you'll also find world-class Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and more produced here. The geography is diverse, but tends to be mountainous, and the higher elevations play a sizable role in grape growing, providing cooler temperatures at night.

Country / Argentina

View more wines from Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.

RP9999 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
The amazing 2019 White Stones Chardonnay comes from a select group of 27 rows planted on lot I of the Adriana Vineyard, and the composition of those rows is soil with white oval stones covered by gravel. The Adriana Vineyard is planted at an altitude of almost 1,500 meters above sea level, in the district of Gualtallary in Tupungato. The stony soil prevents deep root growth, providing optimum drainage. This soil, which is very poor in organic matter, contributes to the vines’ permanent stress conditions. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.

A very fresh, bright white with sliced apple, pear and light cream. Full-bodied with a very pretty texture. Mineral, chalk and lightly salty mineral undertones. Intense finish. Really takes off. Drink now or hold.

The 2019 Chardonnay White Stones Adrianna Vineyard is from the eponymous vineyard in Tupungato, Uco Valley, and was aged for up to 16 months in used French barrels. Bright yellow in the glass. The nose offers hazelnuts, herbs and a whiff of oak alongside hints of linden blossom and acacia. Intense and concentrated in the mouth, this has a skeletal structure and a compact, saline, tangy palate before powerful aromas of fruit and oak gather at the back of the throat to deliver an elongated finish helped along by the acidity.

Juicy and inviting, with heavy citrus nuances to the vibrant black cherry and berry flavors, revealing a trace of red licorice underneath and a light toasty brambly edge to the finish around fine tannins. Drink now through 2028. 7,000 cases made, 5,000 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Nov 2022
The perfumed and floral 2020 Catena Alta Malbec is serious and keeps the balance and poise in this warm and challenging year of the pandemic. It’s ripe without excess at 13.8% alcohol and has mellow acidity, coming through as serious and balanced in the palate, with abundant, fine-grained tannins and a tasty and long finish. It’s a serious Malbec that overdelivers for the conditions of the year. 165,600 bottles produced. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
Gorgeous and elegantly layered, with orange peel, hibiscus and hints of river mint as the entry to red currant and wild strawberry flavors, which are enlivened by a crunchy base of mineral acidity that allows the core flavors to spread out and linger around suave tannins. Drink now through 2032. 13,800 cases made, 5,500 cases imported. (Aaron Romano)

This wine unleashes a barrage of flavors—huckleberry, wild herbs and currants—that lose steam as the tannins take over, lasting on those sticky malbec tannins. It’d be fun to play with pairing ideas, so open it at the beginning of a dinner party and try it alongside everything from cheeses and olives to the main roast.

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2016
There is one white in the appellation range, the 2015 Appellation Tupungato Chardonnay, which is subtly balsamic and spicy from limestone-rich soils in Tupungato in the Valle de Uco, from two vineyards, in Villa Bastías and La Esmeralda. There are pungent flavors, very good intensity and balance and the chalky sensation is nicely coated by juicy fruit. One for the table. 15,000 bottles produced. The first vintage was 2012.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2016
Bright gold-tinged yellow. Much deeper, riper and richer than the basic 2014 Mendoza Chardonnay, offering sweet stone fruit and apple flavors lifted by saline minerality. This dense Chardonnay shows glyceral warmth but finishes with noteworthy lift.

Bright yellow-green. Precise aromas of white peach, citrus fruits and flowers. Rich, suave and smooth, offering noteworthy purity and breadth to its white fruit and mineral flavors. Plusher and rounder than the 2016 but maintains a light touch and finishes with excellent subtle persistence. This is easier to taste today than the 2016.

A pretty mineral nose with a creamy layer to the roasted pineapples, lemon and marzipan. Fresh and really textured on the palate with a medium to full body. It has a lightly phenolic, viscous texture and a bright acidity. Very good value. Drink now. (Zekun Shuai)
