Benjamin Leroux Puligny-Montrachet 2018 / 750 ml.

Item#: 95061

VN89+89–91 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Village has primal grapefruit and lemongrass bouquet that needs a little more mineral expression. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A very textural Puligny with a crisp, fresh yet generous finish. Leroux’s decision to pick this first among all his vineyards pays dividends.

Where It's From

District / Cote de Beaune

View more wines from Cote de Beaune

Named after the city of Beaune, Cote de Beaune is home to some of the world's greatest Pinot Noirs (with Pinot Noir accounting for most of the district's production). The district makes up the Southern half of Burgundy's Cote d'Or. Top wines from here are classified as Grand Cru, while the next best group fall under the Premier Cru classification.

Region / Burgundy

View more wines from Burgundy

In eastern France lies the region of Burgundy, one of the legendary wine regions of the world. Burgundy, home to some of the most expensive wines in the world, is famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With very few exceptions, red Burgundy is made from 100% Pinot Noir. And the reigning white of Burgundy, Chardonnay, can vary incredibly in style depending on where it was produced within the region.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

A fine follow-up to the terrific 2017 — which continues to show brilliantly from my cellar — Niellon’s 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean offers up aromas of white currants, citrus oil and pear mingled with notions of toasted bread and nutmeg. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with racy acids, fine depth and concentration. This is well worth seeking out.

Aromas of spiced pear, white flowers and honeycomb preface the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles, a medium to full-bodied, bright and lively wine that’s one of the more introverted in the range, revealing promising depth at the core and concluding with a chalky finish.

The 2018 Meursault Village offers grapefruit, blood orange and light candle wax aromas on the nose that needs a little coaxing from the glass. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry. This has very fine acidity with impressive tension and salinity on the finish. This Meursault from Fichet comes recommended.

The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots Dessus opens in the glass with aromas of pear, fresh peach, orange rind and honey. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and textural, with lively acids and chalky structuring dry extract, marking a step up in concentration and amplitude after the lieux-dits that preceded it.
VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Meursault Poruzot-Dessus 1er Cru has an expressive, walnut and hazelnut scented bouquet that shows much more ambition than Jobard’s Village Crus. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, touches of quince and liquorice, good weight on the finish with impressive persistence. Excellent, although I find the price here rather “punchy”.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village opens in the glass with notes of wild berries, woodsmoke, plums and spices. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, built around powdery tannins and lively acids. Leroux produced fully 32 barrels of this cuvée this year.
VN88+88–90 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village has a perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petal scents infusing the red currant and strawberry scents, the whole-bunch addition lending a subtle pepperiness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and quite strict and linear in style. There’s a little toughness on the finish that will need some bottle age to soften. A serious Vosne Village.

VN90+90–92 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2017
Less exuberant on the nose than the Blagny La Pièce Sous Le Bois, perhaps tightened by the frost influence, hinting at orange juice, menthol, spices and minerals. Then fat and sweet in the mid-palate, showing more spices and herbs than fruit today. Turns tight, dry and seriously saline on the back end, chewy but not heavy. This very promising wine will require a couple years of bottle aging to absorb its dusty edge.
RP88+88–90 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots was affected by frost, two-thirds of the fruit biting the dust. As such, it feels a little static on the nose, not quite conveying the energy of the La Pièce Sous Le Bois for example. The palate is actually better, with a cheeky touch of licorices on the entry, slightly minty and quite exotic and concentrated toward its outgoing finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is mostly from Les Seuvrées, aged half in 600-liter and half in 225-liter barrels, and has a fragrant bouquet of blackberry, briar and light chalky aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and quite saline in the mouth, with plenty of energy on the refined finish, which really benefits from the stem addition. This comes highly recommended given its prospective price tag.
