Syrah is the principal grape of the northern Rhône wines, found in the sturdy offerings of Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Some believe that the grape may have first appeared in the city of Shiraz (in the southeast of present day Iran), but whatever its origins, it is clear that this grape was already established in the Rhône Valley by Roman times.

Like Cabernet, Syrah produces a tannic, deeply colored wine with robust flavors of black berry, smoke, pepper and tar. Today, Australia has taken over as the most visible producer of this grape, which they call Shiraz. Shiraz is Australia's most widely-planted red grape, and Australian Shiraz provides one of the weightiest mouthfuls of any red wine! The most acclaimed Australian wine region, Barossa Valley, is the birthplace of the legendary Penfolds Grange. Rich and extraordinary, this is the most collectible Australian wine and one of the most famous wines anywhere made from Syrah.

Outside of France and Australia, Syrah wines are also being produced in California, Washington, Chile, and South Africa.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#82685

    RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2014
The 2012 Family Red Blend, which had just been bottled, has a warm and inviting bouquet of red plums, squashed ripe strawberries and faint touches of fennel. It is well defined and really starts to blossom with aeration. The palate is focused and more tightly wound than other vintages that I have tasted. There is a little more backbone here, more linear than I expected. Dusky red plum and cranberry, salted licorices, fennel and thyme all come together nicely, although I suspect that it will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. Another success for Adi Badenhorst, albeit in a more restrained style.

Bright red-ruby. Deep aromas of cherry, redcurrant, smoked meat and leather, lifted by a pungent cranberry note. Rich and fine-grained, with harmonious acidity and powerful minerality giving a light touch and terrific precision to the middle palate. In a very savory style and quite reserved today. Finishes hugely tannic, broad, classically dry and long, with enticing red fruit notes and terrific mineral lift. A very subtle, complex blend in a restrained style.

The only 2013 I was able to taste from this estate, the 2013 Syrah Patrina offers full-bodied richness and depth, lots of dark fruits, cassis, licorice and graphite, perfect ripeness and a polished, elegant personality. Shining for its purity, it’s ready to go and will shine on release.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#83277

    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2017
The approachable nose of this wine shows baked blackberry pie in vanilla crust, with touches of dried purple flowers. The palate is similarly crowd-pleasing, with dark berry and baking spice flavors given intriguing depth through hints of game and rosemary.
    VN8989 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2017
The 2015 Syrah Tous les Jours is one of the very best values readers will find in California Syrah. Inky and plush on the palate, with soft contours and striking depth, the 2015 will offer exceptional drinking for another handful of years, perhaps more. It is an absolutely delicious wine in every way.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Sep 2017
The 2015 Syrah Tous les Jours has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and slightly reduced/rubbery nose to begin, giving way to notes of black and red cherries, black plums and mulberries, plus touches of tar and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, with a nice chewy texture and plenty of earthy black fruit in the mouth, it has a pleasantly savory, if relatively uncomplicated, character.

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#77104

    RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Oct 2013
The 2010 Variation One is another animal altogether. A unique blend of 67% Syrah and 33% Merlot, it exhibits a healthy blue/purple color along with notes of spring flowers, charcuterie, camphor, black currants and a vivid meatiness. If tasted blind, it would not be easy to guess that two-thirds of this rich, textured, full blend is Syrah. Drink this beauty now or cellar it for 10–15 years.
    ST9292 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - May/Jun 2013
Good deep, bright ruby-red. Musky, very ripe aromas of black raspberry, spicecake, menthol and meat; just this side of roasted. Large-scaled, plush and rich, with the wild meaty quality carrying through in the mouth.  Impressively big, thick wine, but can’t match the 88 Keys for lift. Finishes with ripe, building tannins and excellent persistence. (There is no H Block in 2010, as the cabernet franc was hit by branch necrosis as a result of the severe heat spike in late August.)

    Arnot-Roberts Syrah Clary Ranch

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#88017

    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018
The 2016 Syrah Clary Ranch is dense, powerful and meaty, but very much in the Arnot-Roberts style built on restraint. Beams of tannin enshroud a core of inky blue/purplish fruit. There is so much potential here, but readers will have to be patient to allow that to fully emerge. Rose petal, lavender, mint and blood orange add brightness.
