Shop for Barolo and other Nebbiolo Wines

Rarely seen outside its native home in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes its name from the word "nebbia" (fog), prevalent in the area during harvest time. Top-end Nebbiolo hails from vineyards within Barolo and Barbaresco. Nebbiolo wines are generally long-lived, frequently drinking well for ten years or more. At the value end, many excellent bottles are produced from younger vines of these top vineyards, as well as from lesser-known areas in Piedmont.

Famed for their complex aromas featuring roses, violets, earth, tar, currants and dried fruits, Nebbiolo wines are sophisticated and incredibly food-friendly. Traditional pairings include roasted meats, mushrooms, veal and lamb -- basically anything bold and rich enough to combat the high levels of tannin and acidity that these wines (especially when young) tend to possess.

    2012 / 750 ml. | Item#83737

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2016
Sweet strawberry, cherry and currant fruit weaves throughout this elegant, intense Barbaresco. The structure is assertive, yet this stays fresh and vibrant on the long finish. Floral and leafy underbrush notes add depth. Best from 2018 through 2030. 1,700 cases made.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2015
This opens with a subtle, refined fragrance of perfumed berry, rose, violet and a whiff of sweet baking spice. On the palate, notes of roasted herb, tobacco and white pepper add depth to the core of ripe dark cherry and crushed raspberry. Bracing but refined tannins provide the framework and need time to unwind.

Arpepe Rocca de Piro Grumello Riserva

    2010 / 750 ml. | Item#83506

    VN9191 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2016
The 2010 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Rocca del Piro is an excellent choice for drinking in the near and medium-term, as it has a little more mid-palate fleshiness than some of the other wines in the range. At the same time, the 2010 is also less aromatically expressive, while the acidity feels softer and more integrated with the fruit. Sweet red cherry, cherry pit, smoke, dried herbs, tobacco and anise are some of the many notes that meld into the pliant finish. Within the context of traditionally made Valtellina Nebbiolo, the 2010 Rocca del Piro is soft and open-knit in style, both of which add to its considerable appeal. The 2010 is 100% Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) that spent 8 days on the skins followed by two years in cask and cement.

Licorice, cherry and tar notes mark this intense, chewy red, packed with sweet fruit midpalate that offsets the dense, dusty tannins. Shows fine integration and length, with the aftertaste echoing licorice, cherry, tar and mineral details. Best from 2019 through 2035. 200 cases imported.

A red with lots of ripe fruit such as plum, strawberry and leather both on the nose and palate. Full body, velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold.
    WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2016
This opens with aromas of grilled porcini, menthol and a hint of Asian spice while the straightforward palate offers ripe raspberry, dark cherry and cake spice. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide support.

    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 31, 2014
The chewy texture gives definition to the cherry, plum, licorice and tar flavors. The tannins are surprisingly civilized, making this Barolo relatively open and fluid for the vintage. Tightens up on the finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. 2,200 cases made.

Pretty 2011 Barolo with cocoa, plum and fresh lilac aromas and flavors. Full body, firm and chewy tannins. Long, flavorful finish. Better in 2017 but so beautiful now.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2016
Sweet fruit flavors of cherry, strawberry and currant show ripeness, while the vibrant structure drives this red to a lingering conclusion, with menthol and tobacco notes playing supporting roles. Balanced overall. Best from 2018 through 2030. 3,000 cases made.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Jun 2017
The 2011 Barolo is a ripe and fruit-forward expression with dark blackberry, plum and black currant. The wine also offers generous layers of spice, tar and licorice that give the bouquet a solid and centered personality. The wine’s flavor profile is also driven by the warm vintage with more density and a more succulent texture. Drink this well performing Barolo within the next ten years.
    VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2016
Borgogno’s 2011 Barolo is a solid entry-level offering. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, crushed flowers and anise are all nicely delineated in the glass, but overall the 2011 lacks freshness and verve, while the heat of the vintage is felt in the slightly wilted, forward flavors. I suspect the 2011 might have turned out better had it been bottled earlier. I would prefer to drink the 2011 over the next handful of years at most.

    Boroli Barolo

    2007 / 750 ml. | Item#68496

    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2011
The 2007 Barolo is a pretty, seamless wine that captures the personality of the year in its ripe, juicy cherries, spices and crushed flowers. Tobacco, leather and licorice develop in the glass, adding further complexity and nuance. This doesn’t look to be a long-term ager, but as long as readers drink their bottles within the next few years that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2015.

    RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Jun 2016
Bruno Rocca does a fabulous job with his base Barbaresco. The 2013 Barbaresco is an elegant and streamlined wine with delicate nuances of dark fruit and wild berry backed by dried violets and white pepper. The approach is elegant, fine and silky. I highly recommend this wine for near and medium-term drinking.
