Grenache (or Garnacha in Spain) is one of the world’s most widely planted red grape varieties, yet the name is only faintly familiar to the majority of wine drinkers. It is the dominant grape in the famed spicy wines of France’s southern Rhône, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan filling in the blend. Grenache is much cherished, especially in the handcrafted beauties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it achieves its greatest heights. In one of its more affordable incarnations, red Côtes-du-Rhône, Grenache is the quintessential bistro wine.

Grenache thrives in a hot, dry Mediterranean type climate, and Grenache wines are fruity and soft on the palate, almost liqueur-like in texture, with low tannins and acidity. Grenache benefits greatly from blending with a sturdy grape like Syrah or Tempranillo, both of which add tannin and acidity to the soft, fleshy grape. In Australia, these Grenache blends are labeled simply “GSM” (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre).

Bright violet color. Assertively perfumed blueberry and cherry compote scents are enlivened by suggestions of cracked pepper and smoky minerals. Zesty, focused and pure, offering gently sweet dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that deepen on the back half. Closes silky and long, with slow-building tannins adding shape and grip. This outstanding value was aged completely in stainless steel tanks.

2011 was not an easy act to follow as it produced what probably was the best Dofí to date, yet the 2013 Finca Dofí is as good or even better! The single-vineyard 2013 Finca Dofí, made since 2011 with Garnacha and perhaps 5% Cariñena (previously made with Cabernet Sauvignon), was fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barriques for 16 months after malolactic. They have achieved a level of sophistication in the élevage of this wine because it is completely different from the wines of, say, 2005 (or 1995!) that were hard and full of tannins. This 2013 is nothing like that. Of course, there are tannins, but the texture is completely different, more akin to a Barolo with earthiness that is coated by ripe fruit to create a singular, unmistakable Priorat. Again, the best Dofí to date. 18,000 bottles produced.

A blend of 43% Grenache, 41% Mourvédre and 16% Syrah from two vineyard sites, one warmer than the other, this plummy red is bright on the palate. Smoky and not overly oaked, it contributes gamy twinges of black currant and cardamom to the long finish.
    SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2015
Offers lovely aromas of ripe raspberry and rose petal, with well-structured flavors of smoky plum, sage and white pepper. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Drink now through 2020. 413 cases made.
    RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2014
The 2012 Turbine Proprietary Red is a blend of 45% Grenache, 41% Mourvèdre and 14% Syrah (similar to a Châteauneuf du Pape from Southern France). Displaying a Mediterranean personality, it is filled with notions of lavender, Provençal herbs, red and black cherries, spice box and pepper. Although not terribly complex, it is medium-bodied, savory and round. It is a good California version of a solidly made, fleshy Côtes du Rhône. Enjoy it over the next 5–6 years.

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Jun 2014
Solomon’s custom cuvee, the 2013 Cotes du Rhone Andezon, was aged totally in concrete vats. It reveals a dense ruby/purple color as well as lots of smoky, frying lard-like notes intermixed with notions of blackberries and cassis. Solomon calls it his “southern Cornas-based” wine. That’s not hyperbole. This medium-bodied effort has been helped by the addition of 10% Grenache, which provides additional flesh. It is a killer value to drink over the next 1–2 years.
    SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2014
Ripe and fleshy in feel, this offers good weight to the plum and blackberry fruit, with a fruitcake-accented finish. Lacks range, but remains tasty enough. Drink now. 6,000 cases imported.

    2009 / 750 ml. | Item#63283

    RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Oct 2010
Slightly richer with sweeter fruit and additional ripeness as well as higher alcohol is the Andre Brunel 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cuvee Sabrine. This Grenache-dominated offering possesses a dark ruby/purple-tinged color in addition to lots of lavender, black currant and cherry notes intermixed with notions of forest floor and tobacco leaf. Drink this medium to full-bodied 2009 over the next 2–3 years.
    SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2011
Quite ripe, delivering dark plum, anise and crushed blackberry fruit notes laced with a graphite spine. A nice grippy edge marks the finish. Drink now.
    WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2012
Dark and intense, with notes of roasted meat, plum and black olive that give way to an espresso note and chalky tannins on the finish. Pretty stern stuff, which just means you’ll want to give it another year or two before drinking it over the next 5–6 years.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#70682

    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Sep 2017
A blend of 43% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre and 8% Counoise, the 2015 Cuvée le Bec has a medium garnet-purple color and is scented of cherry pie, raspberry preserves and spice cake with hints of potpourri, baking spices and black pepper. Full-bodied and decadently fruited in the mouth, the spicy red berry preserves flavors are well-framed by rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and peppery.
    VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2017
The 2015 Cuvée Le Bec, Steve Beckmen’s entry-level red, is quite tasty. In this vintage, Grenache set was more generous than the Syrah, where yields were decimated. The ripeness of the year comes through nicely in the intense dark cherry fruit, tobacco and licorice flavors.
