Ployez-Jacquemart Extra Quality Brut | Ludes NV / 750 ml.

Item#: 80728

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
A rich, toasty Champagne, backed by vibrant acidity and showing lovely balance. The finely textured mousse carries a range of cherry, candied ginger, toasted brioche, chalk and blood orange granita flavors. Disgorged October 2017. Drink now through 2021. 2,833 cases imported.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2018
A blend of equal parts pinot meunier and chardonnay, with 20 percent pinot noir, this plays meunier’s rich and heady orange-blossom and strawberry notes off the crushed limestone severity of Côte des Blancs chardonnay. And yet the two merge harmoniously into a platinum-clear Champagne, hinting at fresh pear skin layered over meatier fruit. It’s a great buy at $38.

Where It's From

Region / Champagne

View more wines from Champagne

Bring on the bubbly! Perhaps no other wine region in the world has the name recognition of Champagne, to the point where people often mistakenly use the word "Champagne" to describe any sparkling wine. Yet only wines produced within the region can legally be called "Champagne," and to this day it produces some of the finest sparkling wines known to earth.

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Based on the 2017 vintage, this blend includes 30 percent from a perpetual reserve established in 2005. It’s focused on David Pehu’s parcels in Verzenay, Verzy and Sillery, weighted toward pinot noir (70 percent), and it is red fruit thats pours out of the glass. Powerfully structured as a young wine, with a hint of vanilla bean (20 percent of the base wines were vinified in oak), this is more accessible a day after the cork is popped: The mineral acidity turns frisky, the layered intensity of cèpes and chalk mellows toward generosity.

Packs a fragrant skein of violet, star anise and graphite that winds through macerated cherry and strawberry fruit, raw almond and crystallized honey. Finely meshed and satiny in texture, this is softly juicy and fresh throughout. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged January 2022. Drink now. 75 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Nov 2020
The NV Brut Face Nord is a gorgeous, expressive wine. For the Face Nord David Pehu blends 70% Pinot and 30% Chardonnay from Verzey and Verzy, both of which yield nervy, racy wines. The inclusion of 30% perpetual reserve back to 2005 helps fill out the layers while adding notable complexity. Cherry, Mirabelle plum, spice and exotic white flowers give the Face Nord striking aromatic complexity and a touch of exoticism that are so alluring. Disgorged: November 1, 2019.

David Pehu’s NV Brut Face Nord is surprisingly open for a Champagne made from vineyards in Verzenay and Verzy, where the wines tend to be more steely and taut. Spice, dried flowers and red Pinot fruit build in a soft, caressing Champagne that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Time in the glass brings out attractive freshness, lift and energy. This is a terrific introduction to David Pehu’s range. Even with the blocked malolactic fermentation, this is a pretty supple and inviting Champagne. The interplay of fruit richness and vibrancy is compelling. Disgorged: March 2018.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
Disgorged in November 2019, the latest release of Pehu-Simonet’s NV Brut Grand Cru Face Nord is showing nicely, offering up aromas of white flowers and walnuts mingled with hints of orange oil and crisp yellow apple. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and incisive, with racy acids and chalky grip, it will unwind further with a little time on cork.

An elegant version, fine and creamy in texture and backed by lively, orange peel acidity. A streak of smoke-tinged minerality underscores flavors of almond madeleine, poached pear, anise and preserved lemon. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Drink now. (Alison Napjus)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Bright and balanced, featuring a fine, lively bead, mouthwatering acidity and a lightly toasty profile of poached pear and black currant flavors, with rich hints of lemon curd and pastry cream. Drink now through 2020.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2012
Tart red-fruit scents give this a vinous profile, fragrant with cranberry, root vegetables and ginger. It finishes clean, with cool limestone minerality. Cellar this for a year to let the flavors develop further.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2018
Well balanced, this Champagne, even with its enormous production, remains a benchmark and is always enjoyable. In this bottling, ripe white fruit is cut with citrus, with an edge of toastiness that gives complexity. Drink now.
RP8888 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
Based on the challenging 2017 vintage, the current release of Moët & Chandon’s NV Brut Imperial was disgorged with seven grams dosage (representing a reduction of around 50% in the last 20 years) and contains an unusually high proportion of reserve wines. Offering up aromas of pear, peach and citrus oil mingled with hints of fresh bread and white flowers, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy, with racy acids and an enveloping core of fruit, complemented by a pinpoint mousse and concluding with a nicely defined finish. Impressively seamless, it’s a fine rendition of one of Champagne’s largest bottlings. (William Kelley)

Vivid orange-pink. An expressive, spice-accented bouquet evokes fresh raspberry, orange pith, white flowers and ginger, with a hint of rhubarb adding an earthy flourish. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering intense red fruit and bitter citrus flavors underscored by chalky mineral and white pepper notes. Rich yet lively rosé with excellent closing thrust and floral persistence.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2021
Baked cherry and strawberry fruit flavors are ripe and juicy in this bright rosé, underscored by minerally smoke and chalk accents. Hints of candied orange peel, dried thyme and ground ginger play on the fruit range and ride the fine, lively mousse and lingering finish. Drink now through 2024. 9,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Firm and finely knit, this offers richness in a sleek frame, with crushed raspberry, blood orange peel, smoke and toasted almond notes set on the satiny mousse. The finish echoes subtle saffron and spice accents. Drink now through 2022. 9,600 cases imported.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2019
The latest iteration of Laurent-Perrier’s NV Brut Cuvée Rosé is showing brilliantly, bursting from the glass with notes of smoky red berry fruit, apples, blood orange, pomegranate and warm biscuits. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a delicate mousse, good depth at the core and ripe acids, concluding with a sapid, gently phenolic finish. This is a sophisticated, gastronomic rosé that would work well at table.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2004
Starts off toasty and citrusy, then seems to add weight and size in the glass, adding layers of cherry-berry fruit and a hint of dark chocolate. It ends up being a big, broad shouldered wine you could pair with main-course meats.
WS8787 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2006
Soft red fruit flavors of strawberry and red currant infuse this rich wine, fatty as the crab and watermelon salad with which you might serve it.

Extra Brut Champagne

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
A one-off release to celebrate Ployez-Jacquemart’s 90th anniversary, the NV Extra-Brut Cuvée Granite was disgorged in June 2019 with just under five grams per liter dosage. It’s based on the 2013 vintage, which accounts for some 40% of the blend; next comes the 2000 vintage, contributing another 20%, with the balance made up of reserve wines from vintages 2012, 2011, 2004, 1999, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1988, 1983, 1982 and 1976. It’s showing beautifully, offering up a delicate but complex bouquet wafting from the glass with dried white flowers, citrus oil, freshly baked bread, dried fruit, beeswax, toasted almonds, nutmeg and macadamia nut. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and fine-boned, it’s satiny and precise, with a racy spine of acidity and a pearly mousse, concluding with an intensely sapid finish. This is not a powerful, dramatic Champagne, but it’s strikingly complex and exquisitely refined.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2020
Enticing accents of anise, graphite and lime blossom form an aromatic thread that winds through flavors of nectarine, passion fruit, toasted hazelnut and ginger biscuit. This harmonious Champagne shows a pleasing, subtle plushness, while a spine of vivid acidity imparts drive through to the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2027. 416 cases made, 75 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Rich and toasty on the nose, with hints of grilled macadamia nut and brioche underscoring a vibrant mix of passion fruit coulis, blood orange peel, ripe apricot and chalk accents. Finely detailed and mouthwatering, with terrific balance and appeal, recommending it today or for cellaring in the short term. Drink now through 2028. 2,000 cases made, 250 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - May 2022
The 2010 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is a powerful, deep wine. Lemon confit, brioche, green apple and tropical accents all give the 2010 its up-front, effusive personality. All things considered, the Blanc de Blancs is a terrific effort in a very challenging year. I would prefer to drink it over the next five years or so. It would be a shame to miss it at this stage of openness. Disgorged: April, 2021. (Antonio Galloni)
