Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.
Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.
Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Thick tannins lead to a savory, stemmy edginess of varietal intensity in this medium-bodied wine, showing dense layers of black cherry, strawberry and tea. Medium bodied, it settles on the midpalate to offer silky texture and a length of cardamom. (Virginie Boone)
Fleshy and rich-tasting, with fresh acidity and tannins supporting the dried red cherry and raspberry flavors. Minerally in the midpalate, with leafy and forest floor notes on the savory finish. Drink now through 2024. 5,000 cases made. (Kim Marcus)

The 2018 Pinot Noir Ferrari Vineyard is gorgeous. Beautifully perfumed, bright and airy, the 2018 is all class. In the glass, it is silky, perfumed and wonderfully light on its feet, with distinctive notes of crushed flowers and red fruit that open up on a translucent frame.

A layered and fine-grained pinot with strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors. Flint and some cranberry and watermelon, too. Pure. Medium to full body, bright acidity and light asphalt to the strawberry and raspberry undertones. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
Clean lines of plump black raspberry, pastry crust and tarragon make for a delicious nose on this estate bottling. Snappy raspberry flavors kick off the sip, where lilac, wild mint and dried herbs prove both fresh and delicate. (Matt Kettmann)

Crisp and lively, with a hint of sweet apple and citrus fruit, complemented by notes of toasty yeast and spice. Drink now. 350,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)
Not really dry, with honey, lemondrop and yeasty, pastry flavors. A little aggressive in the bubbles, but a nice wine for the price, if you like your bubbles on the sweet side.
Only $14.39 each when you buy a solid or mixed case
Elegant and plush, this wine is both light and rich at the same time, as it combines a fine mousse of bubbles with good fruit and spice flavors and a creamy texture. Everything is well-blended and harmonious as well as concentrated enough to have a long and lightly ripe finish.
This wine has a pale orange color, apricot aromas, and jazzy peach and citrus flavors that are lively and fresh. It’s nearly dry (1.5% dosage), and done in a sophisticated style, with fine-textured bubbles and a clean finish.
Boldly perfumed aromas of raspberry and spicy nuts lead to easygoing flavors of pear, pineapple and anise. Drink now. 15,000 cases made.
