Where It's From

Appellation / Russian River Valley

Some text about the Russian River Valley.

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido has a bigger core of dark fruit as well as lots of briny minerality, peppery herbs, and forest floor aromatics. Fermented with 35% stems and aged in just 30% new French oak, it just about screams Bien Nacido and is a great example of this vineyard. With plenty of structure, good acidity, and a great finish, it’s going to hit prime time with 3–4 years of bottle age and evolve for over a decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Aug 2020
The 2018 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard opens with a burst of sweet red cherry fruit. Mountain flower, sweet spice, star anise and cinnamon add striking layers as the 2018 opens up in the glass. More than anything else, the Bien Nacido is a supreme example of Gavin Chanin at his best.
WS9393 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 10/20
This tiny-production pinot is briary and pretty, with aromas of smoke, sea wrack and wild strawberry. The fruit elements€ — strawberry and raspberry — are concentrated and framed in fine tannins; for game.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Ferrari Vineyard is gorgeous. Beautifully perfumed, bright and airy, the 2018 is all class. In the glass, it is silky, perfumed and wonderfully light on its feet, with distinctive notes of crushed flowers and red fruit that open up on a translucent frame.

A layered and fine-grained pinot with strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors. Flint and some cranberry and watermelon, too. Pure. Medium to full body, bright acidity and light asphalt to the strawberry and raspberry undertones. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020
Clean lines of plump black raspberry, pastry crust and tarragon make for a delicious nose on this estate bottling. Snappy raspberry flavors kick off the sip, where lilac, wild mint and dried herbs prove both fresh and delicate. (Matt Kettmann)

JD9494 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 8/2/2022
The 2018 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is spicy and lifted with cinnamon and dried roses, fresh with wild raspberry fruit and blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied and softly textured, characterized by elegance and finesse. Drink over the next 10 or so years. (Audrey Frick)
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The 2018 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley has a medium ruby color and aromas of cranberries, pomegranate and burnt orange peel with wafts of woodsmoke and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, soft and silty, it has a concentrated core of fragrant red fruit and a long finish layered with spicy accents. This 2018 vintage offers exceptional quality at an appellation level. 2,585 cases produced. (Erin Brooks)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2021
Well-framed, with rich savoriness to the dried cherry and berry flavors. The juicy finish shows mineral and cooking spice notes that linger with forest floor accents. Drink now. 2,585 cases made. (Kim Marcus)

This could be considered a liquid dessert, with a rich gold color, abundant aromas of baked apple and pear tart, and tasty vanilla and marzipan flavors. But with 1% dosage it’s not overly sweet, just very lush in texture, concentrated in flavor and long on the finish.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2012
A bold California style, offering big aromas of toasty oak and tropical fruit, with easygoing flavors of lemon and apple that show lots of spice. Drink now.
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2012
This is Korbel’s Chardonnay-based sparkling wine, and it showcases the house style of clean acidity, slight sweetness and scouring bubbles. The Chardonnay shines through in its typical notes of lime and kiwi fruit.

This has a pale salmon color and aromas like those of Pinot Noir, including the walk-in-the-forest smell. Crisp cherry flavors lead to an intriguing mushroom note on the finish. Nearly dry, the texture is plush and soothing, while the finish is soft and lingering.

Tight and subdued up front, with the tartness of barely ripe strawberries, this finishes on a more gentle note, the pinot noir in the blend coming through as a leafy element that adds complexity. It’s a refreshing rosé at an attractive price.
