Some text about the Russian River Valley.

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

View more wines from California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

View more wines from United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Jenkins is a Charlie Chenoweth-farmed site, an 18-acre vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills. Spicy acidity cradles considerable weight and breadth, accented in rose petals, cardamom and an elusive partnership of raspberry and strawberry. It’s entirely exotic and delicious, both concentrated and lush.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 27th Apr 2016
More is produced of the 2014 Pinot Noir Jenkins Ranch (1,342 cases), which comes from an 18-acre vineyard west of the small village of Sebastopol. This is classic Goldridge gravelly, loamy soil in the vineyard, planted with Dijon clones 667 and 777. This wine tends to be a relatively rich, intense, more broodingly backward, fuller-bodied and extracted style of Pinot Noir. It has a dark ruby/plum color, a big sweet kiss of forest floor, black raspberries and black cherries, spices, and hints of cocoa and oak (about 60% new French oak is used). This is full-bodied with light tannin and should improve for 3–4 years and drink well for at least another decade.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
Tense and gutsy, with a strong personality built around tar- and earth-laced smokiness, tilting toward a savory dryness that becomes the dominant feature. Drink now. 1,342 cases made.

RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2014 Pinot Noir Estate offers earth and dried herb notes to begin, giving way to a core of red and black cherries and mulberries, plus suggestions of lavender and garrigue. Full-bodied and richly fruited in the mouth, it has a great backbone of grainy tannins and refreshing acid supporting the generous red and black berry flavors, finishing long and earthy.
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2017
Tightly wound, focused on an intense core of loamy earth, dusty cedary oak and dried berry flavors, fanning out to anise and nutmeg notes. Ends with a lingering, layered finish. Drink now through 2023. 1,276 cases made.

The 2014 Pinot Noir Rita’s Crown is made from clones 115 and, to a lesser extent, 667. She only makes four barrels, but it is a gorgeous Pinot Noir with notes of forest floor, spring flowers, sweet black cherry and black raspberry fruit with loamy soil undertones. The wine is full-bodied and opulent with well-integrated acidity, wood and tannin. This beauty is reminiscent of a Grand Cru from the Côte de Nuit, and should drink well for another 10 years.

Elegant and plush, this wine is both light and rich at the same time, as it combines a fine mousse of bubbles with good fruit and spice flavors and a creamy texture. Everything is well-blended and harmonious as well as concentrated enough to have a long and lightly ripe finish.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 3/1/2015
This wine has a pale orange color, apricot aromas, and jazzy peach and citrus flavors that are lively and fresh. It’s nearly dry (1.5% dosage), and done in a sophisticated style, with fine-textured bubbles and a clean finish.

Not really dry, with honey, lemondrop and yeasty, pastry flavors. A little aggressive in the bubbles, but a nice wine for the price, if you like your bubbles on the sweet side.
