RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2019
A very creditable contribution to what has become an unfashionable genre is Piper-Heidsieck’s NV Demi-Sec Cuvée Sublime, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of honeyed peaches, fresh pastry, nectarine and caramelized citrus. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with good depth at the core, racy acids and a fine mousse, concluding with a precise finish that avoids any suggestion of cloying sweetness despite its off-dry style. Expect it to sing with additional bottle age. (William Kelley)
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2003
A dessert wine with sweet vanilla flavors, wrapped around nutty, oily flavors. Fruit is not the object here; it’s more decadent, with unctuous, sweet and lingering vanilla and Bourbon-barrel accents.
SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Dec 15, 2014
Toasted marshmallow and coconut accents impart rich and smoky character to this finely balanced demi-sec, with flavors of pear tart and lemon parfait. Fine and creamy in texture, showing mouthwatering, citrusy acidity throughout. Drink now through 2019.

WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2010
A luscious, creamy chardonnay Champagne, this starts off with smoke and almond notes before rounding a corner toward ripe peach and lemon zest flavors. The earthy, pithy fruit character powers on through the finish, ready to take on Dungeness crab.
WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2008
The current release of Carte Blanche is a blend of 2005 and 2004, half and half. The two vintages seem to augment each other in a fragrant, fresh chardonnay. It has pretty floral scents from beginning to end, the dosage making the lemon blossom fruit seem more generous and mouthwatering. A hint of fennel in the end suggests a bridge to a crabmeat and endive salad.
RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Dec 2008
Smoke, graphite, roasted nuts and flowers flow from the NV Brut Carte Blanche from Jean Milan. The wine shows lovely complexity in the tertiary aromas and flavors that have developed in bottle, with superb clarity and a rewarding, generous personality. The January 2007 disgorgement is 2003 and 2004 Ojer juice, with 10 grams of dosage. Anticipated maturity: 2008–2011.
WS9191 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2007
A discreet Champagne, this has delicate lemon-lime and ginger scents over a background of sweet cream. There’s mouthwatering briskness to counteract the sweetness, leaving a sense of complexity and finesse.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2010
Firm acidity provides good intensity and structure, with an excellent frame for the core of spiced pear, acacia blossom, white peach and lemon curd flavors. A bright, fresh wine, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2012.

Laurent-Perrier Harmony

Demi-Sec Champagne
NV / 750 ml.

WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
A heady style of Champagne, this uses sweetness to bring up the fruit flavors, so it tastes like an off-dry riesling on limestone. The scents bring ginger and cider apple, while the finish is richer, with flavors of peaches and cream. It ends with enough acidity to match a fruit and cheese plate.
SP8888 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2017
Lightly sweet and smoky, with tangy acidity enlivening flavors of white peach puree, pink grapefruit granita and pineapple pâte de fruit. Drink now. 500 cases imported.

SP8989 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 15, 2012
Creamy, with honeyed flavors of passion fruit, guava and spice that show a hint of candle wax. There’s good intensity to the acidity in this exuberant rosé, and it just balances the tropical overtones, with an off-dry, moderate finish. Drink now.
WE8888 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2009
A good benchmark for a sweeter Champagne. In fact, not extravagantly sweet, because the fruit remains fresh, giving pear and apricot flavors, and a pure line in fresh acidity.
WS8888 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2009
This rosé’s sweet strawberry flavors balance a kick of spice and rich undertones of nuts. The acidity is ample enough to support the waxy texture and sweet fruit. Serve with a tart aux fraise or strawberry shortcake.
ST8787 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2009
Yellow-gold with a faint peach skin tinge. Peach, nectarine and spun sugar on the nose. Lush, creamy flavors of sweet pit fruits and melon are deepened by notes of honey and nougat. A touch of orange peel lifts this sappy, off-dry wine, which finishes on a slightly syrupy note. This is easier to drink and less cloying than many examples of sweet Champagne.

SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Mouthwatering acidity drives this sleek rosé Champagne, with juicy star fruit and raspberry flavors riding the lively mousse, accented by hints of pastry, orange peel, smoke and dried herb. Drink now.
VN9090 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2015
Dark, vivid pink. Ripe red berries, rose oil and tangerine on the nose, plus a subtle note of toasty lees. Bitter cherry and berry skin flavors give way to softer raspberry in the middle, with a tangy blood orange nuance adding cut and lift. Packs a punch but shows very good clarity and delineation, finishing round, smooth and quite long.
ST8888 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Nov/Dec 2006
Pale pink. Delicate, racy aromas of flowers and spicy red berries. Focused, even tight, with tart red fruit flavors enlivened by tangy acidity. This is one of the driest versions of this wine I can recall. Finishes brisk and clean, with a lingering impression of white peach.
WE8787 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2004
Rather fruity, with scents of cherries and peaches that come together in a round, easy-to-drink style. A little simple, perhaps, but this is a clean, fresh sparkler that won’t disappoint.

Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Rosé

Extra Brut
2013 / 750 ml.

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 18, 2022
Lots of strawberry, cherry and some rose petal on the nose and palate. It’s full, but not heavy. Very vinous and delicious. Lovely length, too. Fruity and vivid at the end. This is really excellent with real drinkability and intensity. Yet, it remains elegant. 35% chardonnay and 21% pinot meunier, the rest pinot noir. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2021
Like a dancer, this graceful rosé is lithe and limber yet powered by a sculpted frame, in this case, well-honed acidity and a minerally underpinning. That frame and the satiny mousse support a delicate range of wild strawberry, peach skin and smoked almond flavors with accents of oyster shell, lemon thyme and Mandarin orange peel. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Disgorged September 2019. Drink now through 2031. (Alison Napjus)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2021
Disgorged in September 2019 with five grams per liter dosage, Moët’s 2013 Extra Brut Grand Vintage Rosé offers up notes of red berries, mandarin orange, cherries and hazelnuts, complemented by subtle hints of spice. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and seamless, it’s a sapid, elegantly vinous wine that contains an unusually high proportion of Chardonnay (35%) by the standards of this bottling.

JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 31, 2023
This has aromas of grapefruit, pomegranates, and biscuits. It’s honeyed and sleek with a medium body and supple bubbles. Soft and creamy finish. Majority pinot noir, with chardonnay and meunier. Around 40% reserve wines. 10g/l dosage. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
A well-cut and lacy Champagne in an elegant, aperitif style, with hints of chalk and graphite underscoring the lively Honeycrisp apple, cherry and lemon curd flavors. Offers a sleek, minerally finish. Drink now through 2021.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2001
Red fruit character comes forward in the aroma and initial flavors, enriching the taste and filling out the smoky complexity. There’s a sweetness to that fruit balanced by a chalkiness, completely Champagne. Yellow Label is refined, super non-vintage Brut.
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2006
A full-bodied Champagne, this has been enriched by reserve wines to add depth and smoky lees intensity to its brisk, youthful elements. It’s a satisfying Brut to serve with poached prawns.
WE9090 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2013
One of the most familiar of Champagnes, the Yellow Label is finely made — a fruity while structured wine. It has both fresh and fragrant fruit as well as richness, a soft, creamy texture and bright acidity. There is no sense in bottle aging here — drink this wine because of its crispness.

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A harmonious Champagne, with well-knit, mouthwatering acidity, offering hints of bread dough and spun honey that enrich flavors of black cherry, salted almond and preserved lemon. Not a powerhouse, but this shows good focus while remaining fine and creamy in texture. The minerally finish shows hints of smoke and oyster shell. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Drink now. (Alison Napjus)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2022
An elegant version, fine and creamy in texture and backed by lively, orange peel acidity. A streak of smoke-tinged minerality underscores flavors of almond madeleine, poached pear, anise and preserved lemon. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Drink now. (Alison Napjus)
JS9191 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, July 31, 2023
This is showing aromas of apricots, grapefruit, pears and short crust. Some walnuts, too. Medium-bodied, with soft bubbles and tasty nut and pie crust notes at the end. Blend of pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay. 24 months on the lees. Tasted from a magnum bottle. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Bright and balanced, featuring a fine, lively bead, mouthwatering acidity and a lightly toasty profile of poached pear and black currant flavors, with rich hints of lemon curd and pastry cream. Drink now through 2020. (Alison Napjus)
WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2012
Tart red-fruit scents give this a vinous profile, fragrant with cranberry, root vegetables and ginger. It finishes clean, with cool limestone minerality. Cellar this for a year to let the flavors develop further.

SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2023
A graceful rosé Champagne, with an enticing mix of mineral, ripe fruit and floral aromatics wafting from the glass, while detailed notes of baked white cherry and yellow peach, chopped almond, fleur de sel, grated ginger, orchard blossoms and chalk ride the fine, raw silklike texture on the palate. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2026. 550 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2019
This vibrant rosé is tightly knit and racy, with a floral overtone and flavors of peach skin, white cherry, whole-grain toast and chalky mineral showing finely honed precision as they ride the creamy, detailed mousse. Disgorged May 2018. Drink now through 2024. 600 cases imported.
JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, September 2, 2019
A bright nose of strawberry and pink-grapefruit aromas with hints of blood oranges and berries, as well as almond biscuits. The palate has a super vibrant, fleshy ball of fresh red-fruit flavor and delivers a refreshing, minerally finish. Drink now.
RP91+91+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Apr 2020
Based on the 2014 vintage, the new release of Gosset’s NV Brut Grand Rosé is still quite tightly wound after its recent disgorgement in November 2019, unwinding in the glass with aromas of orange rind, crisp orchard fruit and warm biscuits. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it’s bright and chalky, with racy acids and notable phenolic structure, complemented by a pinpoint mousse. It will really begin to show all its cards after a few years on cork.
WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2017
This is a soft Champagne — more like a wine with bubbles than a crisp apéritif. With its relatively high dosage and ripe red fruit, it’s rich up front, cleaning up with acidity on the finish. Keep for a few more months and drink from 2018.

Learn More About Champagne and Sparkling Wine

Champagne needs no introduction. It's the most famous wine in the world, renowned for its association with luxury, elegance, and indulgence. But Champagne is just one of many sparkling wines, each offering a unique drinking experience. Sparkling wines are enjoyed worldwide at celebrations and special occasions or simply as a delightful drink to sip and savor.

What is sparkling wine?

Sparkling wine is a broad category that encompasses any wine containing carbon dioxide, resulting in bubbles and fizz. Several methods are used to create sparkling wine, including the traditional method (used for Champagne) and the tank method (used for Prosecco).

Is Prosecco Champagne?

No, Prosecco is not Champagne. While both are sparkling wines, Champagne refers to sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of northeast France using the traditional method and grape varieties that include Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Champagne is known for its complexity, rich flavors, and delicate bubbles. It often exhibits notes of citrus, toast, and brioche.

In contrast, Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine made from the Glera grape using the tank method. Prosecco is lighter, fruitier, and less complex than Champagne. It offers flavors of green apple, pear, and honeysuckle with a crisp, refreshing finish.

Learn more about the differences between Champagne and Prosecco.

What are the different types of sparkling wine?

There are many types of sparkling wine beyond Champagne and Prosecco produced around the world, each with unique characteristics:

  • Crémant from France outside of Champagne is made using the traditional method in various regions throughout France, such as Burgundy, Alsace, and the Loire Valley.
  • Franciacorta is Italy's answer to Champagne. It is made using the traditional method and often features a complex blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc grapes. It is known for its rich texture, fine bubbles, and citrus, nuts, and brioche flavors.
  • Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, sweet wine from the Piedmont region of Italy. It is known for its low alcohol content, pronounced floral and fruity aromas, and flavors of peach, apricot, and honey.
  • Cava is produced in Spain using the traditional method. It is known for its bright acidity, mineral notes, and citrus, apple, and almond flavors.

Are there red sparkling wines?

Yes, there are red sparkling wines, although they are less common than white or rosé varieties. Some examples include:

What are the most popular Champagnes?

Some of the most well-known and popular Champagne brands include:

sparkling wine glasses and bottle

What is Brut Champagne?

Brut describes the sweetness level of Champagne and other sparkling wines. Brut Champagnes are dry, with little residual sugar (less than 12 grams per liter). Other sweetness levels include Extra Brut (0-6 g/L), Extra Dry (12-17 g/L), Sec (17-32 g/L), Demi-Sec (32-50 g/L), and Doux (50+ g/L).

How many glasses are in a Champagne bottle?

A standard 750ml bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine typically holds about 5-6 glasses, depending on the size of the pour. Smaller bottles, such as splits or half-bottles, are also available.

How to serve Champagne and sparkling wine?

To best enjoy Champagne and sparkling wine, follow these serving tips:

  • Chill the bottle to around 45-50°F (7-10°C) before serving.
  • Use tall, fluted glasses to help preserve the bubbles and aromas.
  • To minimize foaming, pour the wine gently down the side of the glass.
  • Pair with appropriate foods like light appetizers, seafood, or creamy cheeses.
