The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is powerful and dense with a real sense of classicism that runs through it. Gravel, licorice, black cherry, cloves and leather all race out of the glass in a positively stunning, inviting Cabernet that hits so many high notes. There is something truly magical about the 2018. Given its quality and price, the Reserve is unquestionably the wine in this range readers should focus on first.

  2. Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#94006

    WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2019
Cameron Parry found his cabernet vines ripened their fruit in 2016 at Brix levels that were lower than usual, sustaining acidity in the grapes. They produced a young and luscious Oakville cabernet, the wine integrating oak and fruit tannins in a way that supercharges its flavors. Rather than weighing the wine down, the structure empowers it, presenting plummy blue fruit, scents of cassis and fruity-umami notes of mushrooms that last, gracious, gentle and refined.
    WE9393 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 9/1/2020
Blended with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, this Cabernet opens with earthy aromas of tar, sage and cedar. It expands on the palate to show an elegant structure of finessed, supple tannins alongside layers of clove and cinnamon atop ripe red and black berries.
    SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2019
A hint of singed savory leads off, turning quickly to a core of raspberry and mulberry fruit, lined with alluring tea, sanguine and iron notes. Offers fine-grained grip and should unwind nicely in the cellar. Drink now through 2030. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 27,000 cases made.
    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 19, 2018

Composed o Zinfandel with Syrah, Petite Sirah and Grenache, the 2018 Red Blend 8 Years in the Desert was aged for eight months in American oak barrels (37% new). Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes roaring out of the glass with notions of baked black cherries, raspberry preserves, blueberry tart and potpourri plus hints of garrigue, tobacco leaf and cinnamon stick. 5. Vik Milla Cala

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93135

    JS9292 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, April 5, 2019
This is a fresh and pretty red with blackberry and fresh-herb character. Medium to full body, very polished and round tannins and a long, delicious finish. The second wine of Vik. Drink or hold.
    RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Feb 2020
The entry-level wine here is the 2016 Milla Cala, a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Carmenere, 11% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Syrah, percentages that change with the vintage. 2016 was a cold and rainy year that resulted in a wine with 13.8% alcohol. The grapes were harvested at night and had a five-day cold soak before fermenting with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic was in barrel, and the élevage lasted 20 months. I was surprised because the initial sensation was of a Syrah, and the wine only has a very small percentage of the grape; the smoky and meaty notes must come from other grapes, not from the Syrah. As the wine sat in the glass and got warmer, it turned spicier. It’s juicy and has the oak nicely folded into the fruit. To me, it has the lightness and the expression of Cachapoal, in a style that’s easy to drink and quite versatile for the table. 96,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2018.
    WE9191 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2020
Berry, raisin and vanilla aromas open this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. On the palate, this is thick and dense, with grabby tannins. Herbal berry and cassis flavors finish with notes of green herbs common to many 2016 Chilean reds. Drink through 2025.

  6. Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne

    NV / 750 ml. | Item#40614

    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2018
Fresh, with focus and intensity, this nonetheless elegant Champagne is finely knit and minerally, offering flavors of crunchy white peach, toast and lemon curd, accented by aromatic hints of cherry blossom, fresh tarragon and spice that linger on the creamy finish. Drink now through 2022.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 6/1/2017
Crisp with a delicious line of acidity and ripe with apple and lemon flavors, this wine balances freshness with hints of maturity from aging in Ruinart’s subterranean cellars. It’s both taut with the tension of cool-climate Chardonnay and showing signs of toastiness.
    WS9292 pts. - Wine & Spirits - December 1, 2013
If chardonnay could be a red wine, it might have the red fruit flavors of this blanc de blancs. Perhaps it’s the floral aspects that turn its chamomile and yellow flower notes toward violets, or the deep earth tones adding color to the flavor. The fruit is persistent, sunny in the middle, then shaded by an almost tannic character to the lees that places the wine with food, particularly roast veal.
    RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2011
This is a fabulous version of Ruinart’s NV Brut Blanc de Blancs. The wine seems fresher, more vibrant and less obviously sweet than in the past, all of which makes this a far more interesting wine. The trademark profile of lemon, jasmine and green apples is very much in the forefront while the wine’s textural finesse and length are both first-class. This release of the NV Brut makes a great introduction to the wines of Ruinart, Champagne’s oldest house. This is Lot LAGJSAF. Anticipated maturity: 2011–2014.

  7. Stags’ Leap Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

    2017 / 750 ml. | Item#94134

    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, September 8, 2020
This shows lots of beautiful fruit with blackcurrants and boysenberries and there are also fine tannins that give it form and tension. Medium to full body. Lovely, fine tannins. Pretty intensity of fruit at the finish. Drink or hold.
    WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 10/1/2020
With small amounts of Merlot and mixed reds, this wine is thick in tannin and bright in red fruit, with complementary characteristics of graphite, clove and cedar. An elegant midpalate of balanced weight lens to a soft, graceful finish.
    WS9090 pts. - Wine & Spirits - 06/20
Fresh, red-fruited and clean, this wine’s juicy cherry flavors carry straight past the espresso-like tannins. It’s bright, with an undertone of smoke, easy to enjoy alongside pepper-crusted duck.
    JD8787 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2020
Moving to the reds, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has a relatively firm, backward style to go with some black cherry and currant fruits, medium-bodied depth and richness, and notes of dried herbs, espresso, and earth.

    VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next few years. As always, Vineyard 29 does a terrific job making Cabernet Sauvignon at an affordable price. Sweet tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice and dried flowers grace this expressive, open-knit Cabernet. I would prefer to drink it on the early side.

  11. Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#91613

    RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Oct 2018
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3.5% Merlot, 1.5% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep purple-black, it sings of warm blackberries, cassis and wild blueberries with hints of violets, dark chocolate, cigar box and menthol. Full-bodied and laden with black and blue fruit, it has a firm structure of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long. 6,441 cases produced.
    JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - January 31, 2019
Lastly, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is another winner that more than overdelivers. While from mountain fruit, this 2016 shows a more rounded, supple, even sexy style to go with beautiful Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, lavender, jammy blackberry, and earthy/herbal characteristics. With ultra-fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and plenty of mid-palate depth, drink this perfectly balanced Mt. Veeder Cabernet any time over the coming two decades or more.
    SP9494 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2019
This shows a vivid boysenberry and blackberry fruit profile, laced with licorice, roasted apple wood and violet notes, all backed by a solidly grippy structure and a late zing of minerality. Best from 2021 through 2038. 6,441 cases made.
    VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Dec 2018
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mount Veeder) is incredibly primary at this stage. Crème de cassis, plum, spice, bittersweet chocolate, menthol, licorice and leather all run through this plush yet structured, inviting Cabernet Sauvignon.
    JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Friday, May 3, 2019
Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants follow through to a full body and chewy tannins. So much character and intensity. Muscular and gorgeous. Needs two to three years to soften.

  12. Château Franc Mayne Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#83233

    RP93+93–95 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 1st Apr 2016
The 2015 Franc-Mayne has a refined and detailed bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis and a touch of cedar emerging from the glass. This is a classy bouquet in the making. The palate is fresh and vibrant with succulent red berry fruit overlaying a fine lattice of tannin. Precise, focused and elegant without compromising the fruit, this is perhaps the best wine that I have tasted from this estate. Bravo!
    JS92+92–93 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Tuesday, March 29, 2016
Lots of blackberry, blueberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Full and super silky. Pretty freshness and length.
    SP90+90–93 pts. - Wine Spectator - Web only – 2016
A bright, racy style, with a little blood orange tang amid the plum and raspberry fruit. Sweet spice and roasted apple wood notes fill in gently, letting the fruit keep the upper hand.

  13. Château Sociando-Mallet

    2016 / 750 ml. | Item#93009

    JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, February 3, 2019
Dark-berry and currant aromas with hints of spice. Medium body, firm and chewy tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Shows focus and seriousness for the appellation, as is usual from this producer. Better after 2022.
    RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Apr 2017
The 2016 Sociando-Mallet has a refulgent purple/black color. It has a very intense and rich, you might say “ambitious” bouquet with layers of small black cherries, blueberry and a touch of sloes, less tertiary than previous vintages and certainly more opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin that almost disguise the firm structure underneath. I admire the completeness of this Sociando-Mallet, the neatly embroidered new oak and the freshness on the finish. The 2015 Sociando-Mallet did not fire on all cylinders last year, but this 2016 is totally convincing. It comes highly recommended as one of the best wines produced at this estate in the northern Médoc. This is an outstanding wine from Mon. Gartreau.

  14. San Leonardo

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#94506

    RP97+97+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 18th Feb 2021
The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I’d still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution.
    VN9595 pts. - Vinous - Jul 2020
The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar.

    2015 / 750 ml. | Item#92715

    JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, November 7, 2019
There’s a beautiful interplay between bright, primary florals, such as rose petals and tulips and dust, hay bale and dried raspberries. The palate suggests a ripe, powerful persona with chewy, juicy tannins and a fine line of pretty acidity. Best ever. Drink from 2022.
    SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jun 30, 2020
Bright cherry and berry flavors are allied to a firm backbone in this elegant red. Floral, earth and tobacco accents add detail. Ends on a savory, salty note. Best from 2022 through 2038. 3,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.
    VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a mix of ripe strawberry and plum, giving way to notes of brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and worn leather, lifted by dusty red floral tones. On the palate, I find silky textures, showcasing ripe red and blue berry fruits, with sweet spices and slow mounting tannin, as pretty inner florals develop. The finish is long, showing the wine’s youthful, clenching wood tannins, yet also kept fresh through brisk acids, as notes of dried red berries and spice slowly fade.
