Tardieu-Laurent Tavel Vieilles Vignes 2023 / 750 ml.

Item#: 97695

JD9090 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/20/2024
A textbook Tavel, the 2023 Tavel Vieilles Vignes has a deep amber/ruby hue as well as a ripe, powerful, yet still lively and fresh nose of mulled strawberries, flowers, and a kiss of herbes de Provence. Medium-bodied on the palate, it brings ample richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, a good spine of acidity, and a certain saltiness on the finish. It’s beautifully done and geared for the dinner table. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Expressive nose of dark berries, roasted meat, smoke, and dried leaves with baking spices and cold fire-pit undertones. It’s full-bodied with finely grained tannins. Textured with a suave character. Elegant Hermitage here with controlled power at all stages. Focused and concentrated yet it has this brightness of fruit at the center with succulent cherries and wild currants providing freshness and verve. Superb. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Forward and heady, with nice range to the sappy cherry and raspberry puree flavors, which are infused with red tea, chalky mineral, cinnamon and clove notes. Builds in power toward the finish, with crushed iron and a beam of acidity bringing freshness. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made, 250 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The 2021 Cairanne Vieilles Vignes shows the fresher, more medium-bodied style of the vintage and has pretty floral, violet, and peppery notes, soft tannins, and an up-front, charming style that will unquestionably offer pleasure in its youth. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Ripe apricots, white flowers, and crushed stone emerge from the 2021 Condrieu, a medium-bodied, elegant Condrieu with good acidity, plenty of fruit, and outstanding length. From a cooler, more challenging vintage, it still brings plenty of richness and is an outstanding 2021 to drink over the coming 4–6 years of so. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Fleshy and lush, with green pear, quince and lychee wrapped around a core of salty mineral. Elegant floral notes highlight the broad yet focused palate, which is offset by refreshing quinine bitterness. Drink now through 2030. 250 cases made, 25 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Classic notes of quince, crushed stone, honeysuckle, toasted bread, marzipan, and white flowers emerge from the 2019 Hermitage Blanc, a rich, full-bodied white with a dense mid-palate, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is head-turning stuff that has some up-front approachability, yet its tight, backward, concentrated core of fruit suggests that 2–3 years of bottle age are warranted, and it’s going to keep for 30 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

A rich and showy wine, with singed brioche and salted butter notes leading off, followed by creamed yellow apple, mirabelle plum, melon and mango notes all mixed together. The finish features a buttery hint, with an echo of macadamia nut. One for the hedonist crowd. Marsanne and Roussanne. Drink now through 2024. 400 cases made, 5 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

The 2022 Luberon Les Becs Fins Rosé is terrific, with a pure, medium-bodied, textured, yet vibrant style as well as classic notes of watermelon, strawberries, and subtle floral nuances. It’s balanced and will shine on the dinner table as well as on its own. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Spéciale is a true “wow” wine if there ever was one. I believe all from La Crau and mostly Grenache, it has incredible purity in its blue fruits, peppery herbs, violets, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. Deep, full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, with ripe tannins and a great mid-palate, this absolutely brilliant 2020 needs just 2–3 years of bottle age and I suspect will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Bravo! (Jeb Dunnuck)

Enticing, with a mix of boysenberry and mulberry compote flavors cruising through, this is scored with a prominent graphite note and backed by mesquite, sweet tobacco and violet accents on the finish. Grippy and well-structured too, with a late tug of warm earth. Grenache and Mourvedre. Best from 2024 through 2040. 500 cases made, 50 cases imported. (James Molesworth)

Another killer wine, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes reveals a dense purple color to go with loads of red and blue fruits, bacon fat, cured meat, and spring flowers. Offering classic Saint-Joseph minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, and plenty of both acidity and tannins, it’s going to shine for 15 years or more. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2020 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes has a kiss of background oak as well as more exotic, lifted notes of black and blue fruits, incense, and orange blossom. It’s medium to full-bodied, has a wonderful core of fruit, and just a forward, mouth-filling style perfect for enjoying over the coming 7–8 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
