Bedrock The Bedrock Heritage | Bedrock Vineyard 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 89262

SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Mar 31, 2019
Brooding but not a bruiser. Finesse combines with power, offering fervent blackberry, fruitcake spice, ground pepper and orange zest accents that build intensity toward big but polished tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Mataro, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2026. 750 cases made.
VN9494 pts. - Vinous - May 2019
The 2017 The Bedrock Heritage Wine is powerful, dense and explosive, as wines from this site usually are. Even so, there is a newfound element of finesse at Bedrock that is quite evident in wines like Bedrock’s own Heritage Red Wine, which was once much more concentrated and pushed. Sadly, yields are down 30% in 2017.
RP92+92+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Bedrock Heritage comes from a vineyard planted in 1888 to a field blend of 27 varieties. It has a medium ruby-purple color and gives up aromas of tar, tilled soil, dried tea leaves, white peach and red and black berries with blue fruit preserves plus pepper and floral tinges. The palate is medium to full-bodied and dense with earth-tinged fruits. It has a chewy frame and juicy freshness to lift that density, finishing very long. This is still tightly wound and could use another couple years in bottle.

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

A heady and satisfying zin, this takes ripe cherry flavors toward forest-berry and spruce scents, before tannins shade the fruit in notes of leather and wood. It’s floral and formidably rich, needing another year or two of bottle age, or several hours in a decanter before dinner with roast lamb.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored and blended with 5% Petite Sirah, the 2017 Zinfandel offers up intense baked raspberries, blackberry preserves and kirsch scents with hints of baking spices, dusty soil, dried herbs and potpourri. Full-bodied with a firm, chewy texture and refreshing acidity, it has plenty of spicy red and black preserves with an earthy finish. (Lisa Perrotti-Brown)

A California zin with pretty ripe-raspberry and vanilla character. Medium body with soft tannins and a fruity finish. Nicely done. Drink now.
WE8989 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 5/1/2019
This is a firm-textured and nicely balanced wine that keeps the grape variety’s exuberant fruit flavors slightly in check. Moderately ripe raspberry flavors mingle with light tannins and good acidity for a palate-pleasing, easy-food-pairing profile.

A briar patch of a wine, with zesty wild berry, underbrush and licorice flavors that finish with medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030. 4,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

The 2020 Zinfandel Old Vine is a forward, boisterous wine that will drink well right out of the gate. In this vintage, the Old Vine is especially perfumed, a reflection of the sites used in this year’s blend. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, spice, licorice and tobacco are nicely pushed forward. The Old Vine is built on a core from Bedrock, plus dollops from Esola, Schmiedt Road and Nervo Ranch. It’s about 85% Zinfandel and 15% mixed blacks. Drink it over the next handful of years. The 2020 Zinfandel Monte Rosso Vineyard is a standout. Readers who want to understand why Monte Rosso is such a special site will find that here. Soaring aromatics, strikingly pure fruit and refined tannins are all signatures of a special place and a special wine. Red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lifted floral overtones grace this racy, flamboyant Zinfandel-based wine. Dollops of Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir and Tempranillo round out the field blend.

Bedrock’s Syrah (California) is once again a terrific value in 2018. Dark fruit, chocolate, spice and leather flavors are pushed forward in this bold, punchy wine. Vineyard sources include Hudson, Griffin’s Lair, Alder Springs, Weill, Shake Ridge, Bedrock, Walker Vine Hill and more. A touch of Viognier and some whole cluster inclusion add character.

The 2020 Evangelho Heritage Wine is rich, boisterous and super-expressive. Succulent black cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are front and center. There’s real weight and density here, yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2020 is dense and full of character. This year’s blend is mostly Zinfandel and Mataro.

The 2019 Zinfandel Esola is all perfumed red berry fruit. Gracious and translucent in feel, the 2019 is a sensual, open-knit wine that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2019 is deceptive in its light-weight feel, but it has terrific brightness and more than enough pedigree to age nicely for a number of years. Exotic spice and floral notes recall young Nebbiolo.

The 2018 Lorenzo’s Heritage Wine emerges from a block in Teldeschi, one of the most highly regarded sites in Dry Creek and Sonoma more broadly. Inky dark fruit, rose petal, mint and lavender are given an extra kick of energy by veins of bright acidity. Sumptuous and vibrant. the Lorenzo’s is positively stunning from the very first taste.

The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.

Just bottled six weeks ago, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo is a tremendous wine from this site. Waves of dark fruit, gravel, spice, tobacco and dried herbs are all dialed up because of tiny yields that year. Sumptuous and massive, the 2021 is an infant. I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle for another decade, and ever that may not be enough to soften the huge, imposing tannins. I hope to have a chance to taste it again in the future. It’s a super-classic Sonoma Valley wine. (Antonio Galloni)
