Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 87005
Spry and briary, this Zinfandel is fun to drink, with lively black cherry, licorice and dried sage flavors, which take on richness and cracked pepper accents toward zesty tannins. Drink now through 2031. 4,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)
Most of the fruit for the 2021 Zinfandel Old Vine comes from Sonoma. Ripe ruby hued, the wine is fresh with ripe berries and white pepper spice, as well as roses. Medium-bodied, with good structure, fresh acidity, and fine tannins, it has a fully dry style. It is an outstanding value and would also be an outstanding wine to pour by the glass. Drink it over the next few years. (Audrey Frick)

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

2021 / 750 ml.
Refined and deeply structured, with potent wild berry, roasted sage and white pepper flavors that build richness and tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2031. 2,425 cases made. (Tim Fish)
Deep ruby, the 2021 Zinfandel Turley Estate opens with rubbery notes that give way to cassis, dried plums and toasted coconut. The full-bodied palate is much more generous than the nose. Super concentrated and ripe, it has a supple mouthfeel and some overt coconut flavors. It seems to unwind as it airs, so give it some time in a decanter, and serve it with grilled meats or ribeye. Immediate aromas of this wine suggest berries right off the bush—raspberry, boysenberry, cranberry. The palate offers a fine-grained, sandy tannic texture and an energetic acidity that elevates those fresh fruit components. Find additional flavors of fresh fennel and tarragon, gently toasted wood, cacao and a hint of roasted coffee bean. It’s fresh, vibrant, fun and enjoyable. (Stacy Briscoe)

Benito Dusi Ranch
2021 / 750 ml.
The 2021 Zinfandel Paso Robles is all varietal and comes from the Benito Dusi Ranch in Paso Robles. It’s more medium-bodied and elegant, with classic Zinfandel notes of red and black plums, peppery herbs, cigar smoke, and sweet spices. I love its forward, seamless texture, and it has soft tannins as well as flawless balance. It’s another gorgeous 2021 from this team with so much to love. Enjoy bottles over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)
Captures the best of Paso Robles Zinfandel, deeply structured and appealingly briary, with notes of bright cherry, brown baking spices and orange peel that finish with fleshy tannins. Drink now through 2032. 4,800 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Dark plums, crushed dark berries, cocoa beans, dried orange and moist bark. Medium-bodied, spiced and racy with sleek tannins and vivid acidity. Flavorful and silky. Drink now. (James Suckling)
Sourced primarily from Oak Knoll, the 2021 Zinfandel Black Chicken delivers briar-laced bramble-berry fruit, plus a decent dose of vanilla (maturation was in 25% new French oak). Full-bodied, it’s creamy, ripe and lush, with a slightly herbal tang on the lingering finish. It’s a balanced, seductive Zin, not over the top while still expressing intense varietal character. (Joe Czerwinski)
A briar patch in a glass, this zesty red shows spirited blackberry, grilled anise and green peppercorn flavors as it builds richness toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2032. 7,185 cases made. (Tim Fish)

Bedrock Vineyard
2017 / 750 ml.
Brooding but not a bruiser. Finesse combines with power, offering fervent blackberry, fruitcake spice, ground pepper and orange zest accents that build intensity toward big but polished tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Mataro, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2026. 750 cases made. (Tim Fish)
The 2017 The Bedrock Heritage Wine is powerful, dense and explosive, as wines from this site usually are. Even so, there is a newfound element of finesse at Bedrock that is quite evident in wines like Bedrock’s own Heritage Red Wine, which was once much more concentrated and pushed. Sadly, yields are down 30% in 2017.
The 2017 Bedrock Heritage comes from a vineyard planted in 1888 to a field blend of 27 varieties. It has a medium ruby-purple color and gives up aromas of tar, tilled soil, dried tea leaves, white peach and red and black berries with blue fruit preserves plus pepper and floral tinges. The palate is medium to full-bodied and dense with earth-tinged fruits. It has a chewy frame and juicy freshness to lift that density, finishing very long. This is still tightly wound and could use another couple years in bottle.

Brooding and deeply structured, this retains a sense of focus and vibrancy, with flavors of wild berries, clove, savory anise and green peppercorn that build tension and zestiness toward medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan and Mataro. Best from 2025 through 2034. 1,000 cases made. (Tim Fish)

2019 / 750 ml.
The 2019 Zinfandel Esola is all perfumed red berry fruit. Gracious and translucent in feel, the 2019 is a sensual, open-knit wine that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2019 is deceptive in its light-weight feel, but it has terrific brightness and more than enough pedigree to age nicely for a number of years. Exotic spice and floral notes recall young Nebbiolo.

Bright purple. Highly expressive aromas of dark berry liqueur, licorice, smoky minerals and violet; this smells like Hermitage. Lush, deep and surprisingly animated, offering intense blackberry and cassis flavors with a sexy floral pastille nuance. Finishes sweet, sappy and long, with building tannins and lingering spiciness and minerality. Wow!
Rich and rustic, with explosive fruit built around the blackberry, wild berry, plum and cherry flavors. The tannins grip and hold, but subtle berry notes seep through and become more beguiling. Best from 2015 through 2028. 300 cases made.
From a well-known Carneros vineyard, the 2012 Syrah Hudson used 60% stems and was aged in 40% new French oak. The blocks of vines used for this cuvee were planted by John Kongsgaard, who also fashions sensational wines from this source. I liked the fact that Morgan Peterson did not have a clue as to what the total alcohol was. This floral, meaty Syrah is reminiscent of a French Cote Rotie. Full-bodied and ripe with plenty of juicy blackberry fruit, this winner should drink nicely for a decade.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo is a brooding, inward wine. Readers will have to be very patient, as this mountain Cabernet is in no mood to show its cards. A whole range of leather, smoke, tobacco and spice lend gorgeous aromatic complexity, but the Montecillo needs time. The only question is how much. A dollop of whole clusters adds further layers of dimension.

The 2019 Heritage Wine Pagani Ranch shows why this site is very obviously a California version of a grand cru. No matter the vintage, the personality of the vineyard comes through with tremendous eloquence. Bright red berry fruit, blood orange, rose petal, mint and cinnamon build in a creamy, stunningly beautiful wine that satisfies all the senses. Most observers place Pagani Ranch among the top three or four sites in Sonoma Valley, but it might very well be higher than that. The 2019 is stunning, that’s all there is to it. As always, the field blend is Zinfandel based, with bits of interplanted Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Lenoir and Petit Bouschet.
Bold and structured, yet refined, with deep blackberry and raspberry flavors that are laced with tar, smoked sage and cracked pepper. Finishes with broad-shouldered tannins. Zinfandel with Petit Sirah, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Lenoir and Petit Bouschet. Drink now through 2030. 250 cases made.

2020 / 750 ml.
The 2020 Old Hill Heritage Wine shows why this site is considered one of the very best in all of Sonoma. The pedigree is evident. A wine of volume, textural depth and intensity, the 2020 is a showstopper. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice lend tons of complexity to this statuesque Zinfandel-based field blend. All the elements come together so beautifully. It’s hard to fully capture the Old Hill with words, as it really transcends descriptors. But when you taste it, you know. You know you are tasting a wine from a very special place.

Just bottled six weeks ago, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo is a tremendous wine from this site. Waves of dark fruit, gravel, spice, tobacco and dried herbs are all dialed up because of tiny yields that year. Sumptuous and massive, the 2021 is an infant. I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle for another decade, and ever that may not be enough to soften the huge, imposing tannins. I hope to have a chance to taste it again in the future. It’s a super-classic Sonoma Valley wine. (Antonio Galloni)

Bedrock’s Syrah (California) is once again a terrific value in 2018. Dark fruit, chocolate, spice and leather flavors are pushed forward in this bold, punchy wine. Vineyard sources include Hudson, Griffin’s Lair, Alder Springs, Weill, Shake Ridge, Bedrock, Walker Vine Hill and more. A touch of Viognier and some whole cluster inclusion add character.
