Remelluri Reserva | Cellar Release 2008 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98189

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2012
Ruby-red. Redcurrant, cherry, rose pastille and spicecake on the highly perfumed nose and in the mouth. Silky, sweet and penetrating, with slow-building tannins and excellent finishing cut and length. A very successful wine for this difficult vintage, and it’s built to reward at least another ten years of aging. (Josh Raynolds)
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Aug 2012
Before broaching present releases, The 2008 Reserva will be the final vintage blended from grapes sourced outside Remelluri’s boundaries. Perhaps my score is parsimonious, but intuition tells me that great Reservas in the mold of the 1976 lie in the years ahead. It has a well-defined nose of blackberry leaf, mint, bay leaf and balsamic that would benefit from a little more tension. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely, smoke and dried herb-tinged finish with a dash of black pepper. This is quite a “serious” Rioja that needs a little more joie-de-vivre. Drink 2014–2024. (Neal Martin)

Where It's From

Appellation / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

One of Spain's most famous wine regions, Rioja lies in north central Spain near the border with France along the Rio Oja River. In fact, many French winemakers moved to this mountainous region from Bordeaux in the 19th century to escape the blight of Phylloxera, which was prevalent at that time. Red wines are typically blends, most commonly using Tempranillo and Grenache (Garnacha) grapes. White wines here are made from Viura grapes.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

The estate red 2015 Reserva was produced with Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano from their 86 hectares of vineyards. It’s from an early harvest after a warm and dry year that achieved perfect ripeness with some rain at the end of the cycle. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats and matured in barrel for 21 months. It combines youth with development, power with elegance and comes through as clean and defined, with a medium to full-bodied palate, focused flavors and a dry but lively finish. 259,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in April and May 2018. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Ripe and beautiful with ripe berries, hazelnuts and spice. Some crushed stone, too. Full-bodied, yet tight and focused. Generous and racy. Goes on for minutes. Drink or hold.

Lots of ripeness with blackberry, fresh-mushroom, bark and moss undertones. Full-bodied with powerful tannins, yet they have a pretty fruit coating and end with complexity and candidness. Old-vine character. Drink after 2023.

It’s interesting to compare the 2016 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra with the wine from the same year but from the external suppliers from Labastida, as the two wines are produced in the same way after a natural fermentation in small vats and oak casks and matured in a combination of barriques of different origins and aged for 13 months. The grapes from San Vicente usually achieve more ripeness, which is the case in this 2016. It’s a little less precise and focused than the Labastida, especially on the nose. There is a little more rusticity on the palate, with some dusty tannins. Again, I think it represents the character of the village. 43,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in April and May 2018.

The DNA of Remelluri is here. Wild mountain herb character, structured and firm, these tannins are succulent and deeply expressive. Powerful and assertive red plums, wild cherries and roasting herbs with the oak sitting well. Power and balance. Try from 2021.

A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, the 2012 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva represents what they are aiming for with this wine, a classical expression of the place, the quintessence of the vineyards. The select their oldest vineyards and age the wine for a long time, coming back to those early years of a modern Rioja that has now turned into a classic. It has some dusty tannins, with good grip and length. It was bottled in 24,238 bottles after an élevage of 26 months. It has been in bottle since May 2015.
