Ribera del Duero is one of Spain's most celebrated wine regions, producing high-end Tempranillos and more. Located along the Duero river (which turns into the Douro river when it flows into Portugal), the region gained acclaim for its powerful Tempranillos (called Tinto Fino), which are typically dark and tannic.

Country / Spain

View more wines from Spain

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

Ines Vizcarra 2014 / 750 ml.

2014 / 750 ml.

Item #: 91834

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
This year I preferred the 2014 Inés, which has a very pleasant nutty twist (is it the Merlot?) and a voluptuous and full body with melted tannins and some oak-related flavors from the élevage that should be rendered invisible with a little more time in bottle. A great Ribera. Bravo! 2,000 bottles were filled in the summer of 2016.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jan 31, 2019
Smoke and loamy earth details and gamy flavors give this firm red an austere character, but there’s a core of black cherry, licorice and mint that evolves into floral and spice notes on the finish. Solid and balanced. Drink now through 2026. 83 cases made, 30 cases imported. (Thomas Matthews)

Vizcarra Senda del oro 2017 / 750 ml.

2017 / 750 ml.

Item #: 89588

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Aug 2018
While I was in Ribera del Duero, the young 2017 Senda Del Oro was one of the few wines I tasted from that low-yielding year. After terrible frosts, the remaining grapes produced a juicy and concentrated red that is full of licorice and blackberries and has a round, lush palate. Very pleasant, among the best in its class. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2018.
SP8787 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 28, 2019
Cherry and grapey flavors mingle with notes of chocolate and graphite in this fresh red. Light tannins and juicy acidity support the round texture. Generous. Drink now through 2025. 1,500 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Thomas Matthews)

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
Sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, as the Ribera del Duero appellation does not allow varietal Garnacha bottlings, the 2017 Garnacha comes from a vineyard planted from a massal selection of the vineyard they use for Celia. In the warm and unusual 2017, this has a deep color and a Mediterranean nose of aromatic herbs and esparto grass, with ripe black fruit—closer to a Priorat than something from Gredos. It also has a lactic note and an earthy touch. It matured in used 400-liter barrels, 50% French, 50% American, for 14 months. 1,900 bottles and 100 magnums were filled in May 2019.

Celia Vizcarra 2015 / 750 ml.

2015 / 750 ml.

Item #: 91868

RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
2015 is a powerful vintage, and Juan Carlos Vizcarra saw it coming and did good work (low fermentation temperatures, some full clusters, shorter macerations…), and it shows in the top-end bottlings that I tasted from that year. The 2015 Celia, a micro-vinification in open 400-liter oak barrels, is ripe and powerful, reflecting the character of the year, but it retained good freshness, which makes it balanced. It comes through as classically proportioned, with concentration and depth, abundant, fine-grained and chalky tannins and a harmonious, clean and long finish. It’s approachable now (better with powerful food) but should develop nicely in bottle. 2,000 bottles were filled in July 2017. The wine still feels very young, so I guess it’s going to age at a slow pace. The two top wines are named after Vizcarra’s daughters, so for him, it might be difficult to say which one he likes best, but Celia would be my choice.

Alion 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 1388

JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Sunday, November 20, 2022
Ripe, tarry plums and black cherries with violets, rocks, coffee and graphite. Refined notes of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder, too. Full-bodied and juicy with an iron fist of tannins, yet at the same time so velvety and polished. Very long, focused finish, showing lots of finesse and layers. Drinkable now, but better after 2025. (James Suckling)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2021
The 2019 Alión was cropped from a drier vintage compared with the average, and the wines from that year tend to be powerful, concentrated and with structure. They shortened the maceration by 11 days and used concrete for part of the élevage, trying to reduce the impact from the oak in the wine. They define 2019 as a powerful, concentrated and juicy vintage, sensual and unctuous. The wine is ripe at 15% alcohol and has mellow acidity (4.4 grams) and a pH of 3.88, reflecting the warm and dry year that delivered powerful and concentrated wines, similar to the wines from 2015. It’s quite fruit-driven, ripe and juicy, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins despite the limited pumping over they did to avoid extracting too much, and the maceration was also shortened. 256,526 bottles, 7,005 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in June 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023
While tightly meshed and structured by firm, chalky tannins, this red has a plush, polished frame matched to a pretty range of boysenberry coulis, violet, mocha and Earl Grey flavors. Reveals hints of tar and black licorice that linger on the juicy finish. Drink now through 2029. 21,377 cases made, 1,360 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
The red blend 2019 Cyclo was produced with Tempranillo and some 10% between Garnacha, Cariñena, Viura and Albillo. It fermented with full clusters in concrete and indigenous yeasts, foot trodden, and it matured in oak barrels. It’s quite ripe and heady at 15% alcohol with generous oak, spice and smoke and quite a lot of tannin. It’s still tannic. Give it some more time. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Los Cantos de Torremilanos 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 93501

RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Jan 2023
2019 was warm and dry, and the wines are powerful and quite tannic, as I see in the 2019 Los Cantos de Torremilanos, which coupled with a longer élevage (15 months in barrel) resulted in a tougher wine. It has concentration from low yields and keeps the freshness but with a dry finish and not enough fat. This is 100% Tempranillo; it was not a year for Merlot, which in other vintages represents a small percentage of this wine. This was bottled in January 2021, also because there was no availability of bottles… (Luis Gutiérrez)
