Where It's From

Region / Ribera del Duero

View more wines from Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is one of Spain's most celebrated wine regions, producing high-end Tempranillos and more. Located along the Duero river (which turns into the Douro river when it flows into Portugal), the region gained acclaim for its powerful Tempranillos (called Tinto Fino), which are typically dark and tannic.

Country / Spain

View more wines from Spain

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

Hints of tarry smoke and tobacco offer a subtle, savory underpinning for the focused notes of black cherry and mulberry fruit on display in this lively, medium- to full-bodied red. Lightly chewy, with spice box and vanilla accents on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 10,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

The juicy, velvety and aromatic red 2020 Pícaro del Águila Tinto is fine-boned and quite faithfully represents what they want to express with this cuvée; it’s very tasty and has some chalkiness (perhaps through less ripeness than in years like 2018) with 14% alcohol and mellow acidity. The nose reveals some Côte-Rôtie-like notes of smoked meat and violets. 2020 delivered a good crop of healthy grapes that produced the finest wine to date for this bottling. This is superb, elegant and powerful, with everything in place (seems to be the signature of 2020) and perfectly integrated oak. 71,382 bottles and 1,979 magnums produced. It was bottled in September 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)

The 2020 Cyclo feels quite different from the 2019 I tasted next to it. It comes from three plots of old vines that have a majority of Tempranillo and some 10% other traditional varieties that are intermixed in the field in the old vineyards. This is perfumed, expressive, floral and extroverted, with much better integrated oak and a velvety and juicy mouthfeel. I don’t know what happened between 2019 and this 2020, but this has a very different profile—a lot more elegant, complex and balanced. It’s slightly lower in alcohol, 14.5%, and is ripe without excess. 10,000 bottles were filled in October 2022. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Fine oak spices and cocoa powder to the ripe cherries, cassis, black cherries and warm stones. Full-bodied and polished on the palate with tightly wound tannins that seep through the compact fruit. Good balance between tight structure and fruit density. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better from 2024. (Zekun Shuai)

Long and creamy, this elegant red is structured by supple tannins and juicy acidity, a fine frame for the appealing range of baked black cherry, fig cake, mocha and sage. Fresh, spiced finish. Drink now through 2028. 7,083 cases made, 2,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
