Where It's From

Appellation / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

One of Spain's most famous wine regions, Rioja lies in north central Spain near the border with France along the Rio Oja River. In fact, many French winemakers moved to this mountainous region from Bordeaux in the 19th century to escape the blight of Phylloxera, which was prevalent at that time. Red wines are typically blends, most commonly using Tempranillo and Grenache (Garnacha) grapes. White wines here are made from Viura grapes.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/31/2022
Aromas of blackberry and butterscotch set the scene for flavors of black cherry, dark plums, toffee and violet that are dropped into plush tannins. This wine slowly winds down into a bright, fruit-filled finish. (Mike Desimone)

A delicious, early drinking crianza with berry and citrus aromas and flavors. Light to medium body, creamy tannins and a fresh finish. Vegan. Drink now.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The juicy and primary red 2019 Cune Crianza shows ripeness, at only 13.5% alcohol (they aim for 13%), but also has freshness. The oak is very subtle and integrated into the fruit that is at the front of the nose and palate. It has a touch of rusticity, an earthy touch on the palate. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo from Rioja Alta that fermented in 20,000-liter stainless steel vats and matured in used (mostly) American oak barrels for one year. They produce three million bottles of this and bottle it throughout the year. This is the wine that sets the bar in the red portfolio. Very good. (Luis Gutiérrez)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
I was surprised by the freshness of the 2019 Anza, a red produced with grapes from vineyards close to the Sierra Cantabria Mountains. The wine does have a lot of freshness, with a pH of 3.4 and moderate alcohol (13.5%) from grapes he harvested quite early and from a cool part of Rioja Alavesa even if the vintage was very dry and warm. The old vines always have a field blend with a majority of Tempranillo but also white Viura and Malvasía or reds Graciano and Garnacha; it fermented destemmed and with a gentle extraction in oak and stainless steel vats and matured in 500-liter oak barrel for 10 months, as he doesn’t want any oak aromas in his wines. It’s aromatic, balanced, fresh and elegant and super drinkable but not banal or lacking complexity. It’s serious and elegant, truly delicious and with a velvety palate. 11,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The young red 2019 Viñas de Gaín was produced with Tempranillo grapes from different vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude, and it fermented in oak and stainless steel vats followed by malolactic in barrel and an élevage in barrel for nine months. They aimed for a fresh, fruit-driven and juicy red that comes from a low-yielding year, so the wine is concentrated but keeps the approachable style. It has nice balance. In warmer and riper years, they do shorter macerations at lower temperature and a short élevage to keep the aromatic and fruit-driven character, avoiding heavy wines. This is always a very good value within the Artadi range. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

This dark-garnet-colored wine offers a bouquet of dark plum, cassis and baking spice. Flavors of blackberry pie, vanilla and anise dissolve into a spice-laden finish. (Mike Desimone)

A fresh, rather zesty red with berry and orange-peel aromas and flavors. Hints of chocolate. Medium body. Nice tannins. Tangy acidity. Tempranillo. Drink now. (James Suckling)
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Aug 31, 2022
An elegant red, featuring orange peel acidity that acts as a lightly juicy frame for the silky weave of macerated cherry flavors, with a spiced thread of anise and milled white pepper and notes of cured tobacco. Shows light, fine tannins and a touch of loamy earth on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 100,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)
