Item#: 99910

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Monday, November 2, 2020
A firm, tannic red with blackberry and walnut character on both the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a long, flavorful finish. Needs bottle age to soften. Try after 2022. (James Suckling)
VN9393 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2021
Saturated garnet. Ripe cherry, red currant and pungent flowers on the expansive nose, along with vanilla and tobacco nuances that build in the glass. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering oak-spiced red and dark berry and fruitcake flavors and a hint of candied flowers. Slowly building tannins frame the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and repeating cherry and vanilla notes.
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - May 31, 2022
A fresh and elegant red, which deftly knits sinewy tannins with roasted black plum, graphite and black cherry flavors and savory accents of beef bouillon, smoke and tobacco. Lingering and chewy finish. Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha. Drink now through 2027. 12,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Where It's From

Appellation / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

One of Spain's most famous wine regions, Rioja lies in north central Spain near the border with France along the Rio Oja River. In fact, many French winemakers moved to this mountainous region from Bordeaux in the 19th century to escape the blight of Phylloxera, which was prevalent at that time. Red wines are typically blends, most commonly using Tempranillo and Grenache (Garnacha) grapes. White wines here are made from Viura grapes.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

This is a beautiful play between fresh blackberries, violets and lavender and dried meat, vanilla and spices. Iodine, licorice and tar all in there, too. Full body, muscular yet grainy tannins and layer after layer of plush fruit, wrapped up neatly in tangy acidity. Drink in 2022.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The red 2017 Horizonte de Exopto is a traditional blend of Tempranillo with 10% each Garnacha and Graciano, but now not all of grapes come from the village of Ábalos — since 2016, they have added two plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured 50/50 in 600-liter demi-muids and 225-liter barriques for one year. The wine is surprisingly fresh, expressive and aromatic and has a touch of black pepper, perhaps because there are more grapes from higher-altitude vineyards that didn’t suffer the frost, and the result might be fresher than some wines from 2016 or 2015. The move to bigger barrels and less oak seems to have paid back with much better integration of the wood and additional nuance. A great effort for the vintage and a bit of a surprise — lighter and less concentrated but more drinkable. 9,000 bottles were filled in November 2018.

Smoky and toasty notes frame plum, forest floor and cola flavors in this firm red. Firm tannins and balsamic acidity give this a slightly austere character, but the fruit and spice elements linger. Drink now through 2027. 30,000 cases made, 600 cases imported. (Thomas Matthews)

Fine roasted spices and a hint of vanilla and tobacco leaf to the bright cherries and plums. Medium-bodied and firm on the palate with some grainy tannins and a medium-long finish. Some more wood tannins here that will need some time to integrate. Tempranillo and graciano. Vegan. Drink in 2025. (Zekun Shuai)
