Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 99081

SP9292 pts. - Wine Spectator - Jul 31, 2023
Well-balanced and fresh, this medium-bodied version is tightly meshed at first, though opening nicely in the glass to display flavors of ripe cherry and red currant, mocha, iron and spiced orange peel. The lively finish is firmed by fine, taut tannins. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030. 20,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

Aromas of spiced cherries, blueberries, orange peel, savory plums and some chocolate and vanilla. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins. Caressing texture with a fresh core of dark fruit on the center-palate, before a long, juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Where It's From

Appellation / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

One of Spain's most famous wine regions, Rioja lies in north central Spain near the border with France along the Rio Oja River. In fact, many French winemakers moved to this mountainous region from Bordeaux in the 19th century to escape the blight of Phylloxera, which was prevalent at that time. Red wines are typically blends, most commonly using Tempranillo and Grenache (Garnacha) grapes. White wines here are made from Viura grapes.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

I like the medium-velvety tannins with firmness, brightness and freshness. Full-bodied, racy and energetic. Elegance with structure. 85% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% mazuelo. Needs four to five years in the bottle, but already impressive to taste.
SP9090 pts. - Wine Spectator - Sep 30, 2022
A fresh red, with tobacco and smoke notes that are fragrant and savory as they waft through plumped cherry and milled pepper. Chalky tannins are a firm structural core, but this is well-integrated throughout. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2029. 4,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

A red with lovely sweet-berry, crushed-stone and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a creamy, polished finish. Drink or hold.

This wine’s bright raspberry notes and tangy tangerine acidity combine in a lean, gamey red with a hint of honeyed sweetness. Pour it with pimentón-spiced pork rillettes.

A perfumed nose of dark cherry, plum, coconut, cedar and dried thyme. Full-bodied with chewy tannins. Rich and structured with a chalky texture and a firm, delicious finish. Better from 2022.

Lively and harmonious on the palate, this medium- to full-bodied version offers an appealing range of pureed black cherry and cassis, minerally iron and smoke, mocha and licorice notes. Silky in texture, with fine-grained tannins emerging on the lingering finish. Shows good focus throughout, yet is very accessible. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030. 15,000 cases made, 3,700 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
I love the classical nose of spice, berries and herbs of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza, a textbook ultra-classical Rioja that matured in used American oak barrels for 24 months, during which time it was racked by gravity every six months. These wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and a soft vinification without much extraction of long macerations. It’s expressive, polished and very pleasant, really what I expect in this style, with some developed notes and a gentle mouthfeel. 100,000 bottles produced. Very good introduction to a classical Crianza at a very attractive price. It was bottled in April 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
