Artadi Vinas de Gain 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 98217

RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The young red 2019 Viñas de Gaín was produced with Tempranillo grapes from different vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude, and it fermented in oak and stainless steel vats followed by malolactic in barrel and an élevage in barrel for nine months. They aimed for a fresh, fruit-driven and juicy red that comes from a low-yielding year, so the wine is concentrated but keeps the approachable style. It has nice balance. In warmer and riper years, they do shorter macerations at lower temperature and a short élevage to keep the aromatic and fruit-driven character, avoiding heavy wines. This is always a very good value within the Artadi range. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

Appellation / Rioja

View more wines from Rioja

One of Spain's most famous wine regions, Rioja lies in north central Spain near the border with France along the Rio Oja River. In fact, many French winemakers moved to this mountainous region from Bordeaux in the 19th century to escape the blight of Phylloxera, which was prevalent at that time. Red wines are typically blends, most commonly using Tempranillo and Grenache (Garnacha) grapes. White wines here are made from Viura grapes.

The picturesque countryside of Spain is littered with vineyards large and small, and offers up some of the best value available on the wine market today. You can consistently fine critically-acclaimed Spanish wines selling for less than their counterparts from other wine-producing countries. The Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions are most famous, and there's nowhere else in the world where you'll find as many world-class Tempranillos.

An easy but quite well-balanced Rioja Crianza, delivered in a medium body with some chalky tannins and fresh acidity. Cheerful cherry and plum flavors with a touch of juicy blue fruit. Just a hint of cream in the finish. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. (James Suckling)

This wine offers aromas of purple plum and black-olive paste. Soft in the mouth, it has feathery tannins and flavors of pomegranate, cranberry, clove, orange zest and hints of oregano. (Mike Desimone)

RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
I was surprised by the freshness of the 2019 Anza, a red produced with grapes from vineyards close to the Sierra Cantabria Mountains. The wine does have a lot of freshness, with a pH of 3.4 and moderate alcohol (13.5%) from grapes he harvested quite early and from a cool part of Rioja Alavesa even if the vintage was very dry and warm. The old vines always have a field blend with a majority of Tempranillo but also white Viura and Malvasía or reds Graciano and Garnacha; it fermented destemmed and with a gentle extraction in oak and stainless steel vats and matured in 500-liter oak barrel for 10 months, as he doesn’t want any oak aromas in his wines. It’s aromatic, balanced, fresh and elegant and super drinkable but not banal or lacking complexity. It’s serious and elegant, truly delicious and with a velvety palate. 11,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020. (Luis Gutiérrez)

A plush red in a modern style, with dense tannins and lively acidity creating a sinewy frame. An expressive range of boysenberry coulis and black licorice flavors transition to deep notes of ground coffee, tarry smoke and dark chocolate that linger on the sculpted finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Best from 2024 through 2037. 2,935 cases made, 295 cases imported. (Alison Napjus)

This dark-garnet-colored wine offers a bouquet of dark plum, cassis and baking spice. Flavors of blackberry pie, vanilla and anise dissolve into a spice-laden finish. (Mike Desimone)

Artadi San Lazaro 2019 / 750 ml.

2019 / 750 ml.

Item #: 98148

RP9797 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 14th Jul 2022
The bottled 2019 San Lázaro delivered what the sample promised back in January. It comes from one of my favorite vineyards, a 1.62-hectare plot in Laguardia just below Bodegas Palacio that was planted in 1956 on limestone and sand soils that produce elegant wines. In the past, the vineyard contributed to the Pagos Viejos blend that has been bottled separately since 2016 and has quickly taken a leading position in the Artadi hierarchy. The wine is complex and nuanced, serious and insinuating, with fine aromas of herbs and flowers and a lively and balanced palate with ultra fine, abundant and chalky tannins. Superb! 2,000 bottles were filled in June 2021. (Luis Gutiérrez)
