Tua Rita Syrah | Rosso Toscana 2007 / 750 ml.

Item#: 77732

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2010
The estate’s 2007 Syrah explodes from the glass with cracked black pepper, cured meats, blueberry jam and sweet spices. This is a remarkably muscular, full-throttle Syrah that offers exceptional balance and tons of complexity. Mineral-infused black fruit, graphite and crushed rocks are some of the nuances that inform the long, refreshing finish. In 2007, the Syrah is Tua Rita’s flagship wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2027.
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 31, 2009
Displays loads of flowers, with licorice and mint combining with crushed dark fruits. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and vanilla, blueberry, licorice and coconut flavors on the finish. Long and very polished. Best after 2011. 290 cases made.
ST9393 pts. - Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar - Sep/Oct 2010
Deep inky ruby. Complex nose melds the olive aromas of Crozes-Hermitage with the black pepper of Cote-Rotie, plus the superripe, almost roasted red fruits typical of the Suvereto area. Less powerful in the mouth than the nose suggests, with flavors of candied red fruits, dried herbs and bacon. Finishes broad and creamy, with ultra-smooth tannins and a saline nuance. Probably the best syrah ever made at Tua Rita.

Region / Tuscany

View more wines from Tuscany

There are few regions as picturesque as Italy's Tuscany. And there are few regions that produce finer wines, either. Tuscany is home to legendary wine regions Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, among others, where the red wine grape Sangiovese is king. It's also home to "Super Tuscans," a category of Tuscan wines that don't officially fall within the Italian wine classification system.

Italy is famous for its powerful, sleek, and elegant reds wines from ancient growing areas with legendary names such as Chianti, Barolo, Barbaresco, Montepulciano. Italian white wines are also gaining popularity: Orvieto, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon are excellent examples of Italian white wines.

Wines of Italy are complex and flavorful, much like the culture that is their source and the cuisine that is their match.

Very spicy and peppery with blue-granite aromas plus hints of grilled and smoked meat. Cloves and nutmeg. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a super spicy finish that almost burns with so much character yet turns fine and focused at the end. A beauty.

Sourced from the granitic western portion of the appellation, the 2016 Hermitage La Chapelle features mouthwatering aromas of black olives and charred beef. It’s full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, incredibly lush without being overtly fruity. In fact, it’s largely savory, with elegant shadings of leather and spice on the long, silky finish. Yet despite being delicious now, this still has the granite backbone to age through 2040.

Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, exotic spices, cured tobacco, olive and potpourri are given vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Fresh and expansive in the mouth, displaying deeply concentrated boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors, along with suggestions of candied violet, star anise and bitter chocolate. The floral and mineral notes return on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and a sweet touch of candied licorice.

Reminding me of the 2009 La Chapelle (which is a personal favorite), the brilliant 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle knocks it out of the park with its massive, opulent personality. Notes of smoked black fruits, scorched earth, burning embers, and graphite as well as subtle background meatiness flow to a monster of a Hermitage that has full-bodied richness, incredible depth of fruit, and an overwhelming, sexy style that’s already impossible to resist. Do your best to hide bottles for 4–5 years, but it’s going to evolve for 40 years or more. There are roughly 2,000 cases of this elixir, and every Syrah lover out there should have a bottle (or more) in their cellar. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
The 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle comes from the firm’s vineyards on the western half of the Hermitage slope, primarily Le Méal, but with substantial contributions from Les Rocoules and Les Bessards. Classic notes of cassis, black olives, mocha and roasted meat are joined by hints of baking spices in a wine that’s full-bodied, deep, dense and rich, with a velvety texture and a lingering finish. It’s lower in alcohol than the 2018, less voluptuous and maybe just a step behind that monumental wine, but it’s still a serious collectible with three decades of evolution ahead of it.

The icon is in dangerously seductive form. Such pristine dark cherries, blackberries and dark plums, dark chocolate, finely crushed spices and plenty of crushed dark stones on offer. The palate is very intense, very slick and fine tannins deliver an almost playfully soft impression. The oak is super integrated. Like La Maison Bleue, this approachability is an aberration, as it has immense power, concentration and length with such regal and alluring swagger at the finish. But there is so much more to come. Try from 2024, better after 2030.
RP97+97–99 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2018
In need of serious air to open up, the 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle became more and more impressive the longer I kept it in the glass. At first it seemed a bit simple, if admirably plummy and rich, but by the time ten minutes had elapsed, it was showing off elegant notes of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis, while remaining full-bodied, rich and concentrated. It’s velvety and long on the finish, but something left me wanting a bit more. It’s surely a great La Chapelle, but will it reach that elusive triple-digit score?

Brilliant magenta. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, incense and potpourri, while olive and exotic spice nuances build in the glass. Displays intense, alluringly sweet black/blue fruit, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that show sharp delineation and are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Closes extremely long and precise, displaying a smoky, intensifying mineral quality and youthfully gripping tannins that build steadily.

Horsepower Syrah High Contrast Vineyard

2016 / 750 ml.

Item #: 92513

JD100100 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - April 11, 2019
From a vineyard planted in 2013, the 2016 Syrah High Contrast saw loads of stems and mostly neutral barrels. This thrilling wine has a Chave Hermitage-like purity and class as well as gorgeous notes of cassis, black raspberries, smoked earth, and graphite. It’s deep, pure and layered, incredibly layered, pure, and long, with a finish that won’t quit. This isn’t for those looking for an inky, massive wine, but it’s pure class, complete, amazingly long, and elegant. Give bottles a few years in the cellar and it’s going to shine for 15–20 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Dec 2019
The 2016 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard initially wafts from the glass with a rocky dustiness, then reveals an elegant black and red-fruited core of aromas, oozing with seductively bright and focused black raspberry notes, followed by red and purple flowers, a line of stemminess and dried herbs de Provence on the lifted and aromatically complex nose. Medium-bodied on the palate, the wine is ethereal at first, then compounds in the mouth with a mineral tension, the fruit turning a touch tarter across the mid-palate, showing incredible precision and balance. The wine continues to evolve with a fantastic expression and long, drawn-out finish for this young vineyard that was just planted in 2013. Only 335 cases were produced. If you can afford it and you can find it, buy it!

Fresh dark red. Complex scents of dark raspberry, boysenberry, musky herbs, dark chocolate, brown sugar and flinty minerality. Quite dense, thick and deep, particularly for very young vines, conveying a strong saline character to its flavors of black raspberry, cherry liqueur and minerals. This large-scaled, mouthfilling wine finishes ripely tannic and long, with a late note of chocolate-covered cherry. Ultimately a bit salty for my taste (the pH is a very high 4.1) but there’s plenty of fruit too. Incidentally, Christophe Baron bought a total of 18 acres with his general manager Trevor Dorland. While all of the acreage technically lies within The Rocks, only half of it features the round stones typical of this district, according to Dorland.

Tua Rita Redigaffi 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

The aromas of violets, roses and lavender are captivating. Turns to spices and hazelnuts. So complex. This full-bodied wine grows and grows on the palate, yet it remains agile and fresh. Plenty of energy in the palate. More powerful than the perfect 2015. We will see which is better in the end. Great wine. Try in 2022.
RP9898 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Mar 2019
Wow. This is a beautiful year for Tua Rita’s legendary Merlot. The grapes were harvested early, between September 4th and the 6th, and spent 21 months in barrique. This wine is a perennial overachiever, and the 2016 Redigaffi is no exception. It has a remarkable persistence to the bouquet, along with tonic crispness and a velvety mouthfeel. It’s a complete and beautifully structured expression, most notable for its freshness and softness. This Redigaffi is still a bit closed, which leads me to think it is going to be a stunner when you finally retrieve it from your cellar in 5–10 years from now.
VN9797 pts. - Vinous - Mar 2019
The 2016 Redigaffi is another absolutely compelling wine in this range. Explosive and opulent, the 2016 manages to be both spectacularly rich and yet also retain tremendous freshness. Blueberry jam, lavender, crushed rocks and sweet oak all build as this sumptuous yet structured Merlot shows off its considerable personality. In 2016, Redigaffi is energetic, persistent and also very classy. Drink it over the next decade or so.
