Saint Cosme Cote-Rotie 2016 / 750 ml.

Item#: 89424

JS9494 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 29, 2018
Stony aromas with sweet spices in abundance, ahead of ripe plums and raspberries. The palate has silky tannins and a very suave, fleshy array of ripe, red plums and nectarines. Long and delicious. Drink or hold.
RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Dec 2018
A blend of Syrah from the lieux-dits of le Plomb, Besset, la Viallière and Neve, Saint Cosme’s 2016 Cote Rotie was fermented using whole clusters and aged in (mostly) used barrels. It’s a sexy, supple Côte Rôtie, with notes of hickory smoke, wood ash and bacon balanced by lush dark-fruit flavors. Slurp it down it over the next 7–8 years while waiting for some of the more tannic examples of the appellation to mature.
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 30, 2018
Dark plum and blackberry fruit takes on a lightly mulled edge while anise, roasted apple wood and racy bay leaf notes fill in the background, adding cut and drive. Youthfully vibrant and balanced for the cellar. Best from 2020 through 2035. 600 cases made, 230 cases imported.
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - Jun 2018
Bright purple. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes candied dark berries, olive, smoked meat and incense, and floral and mineral notes build steadily. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering sappy boysenberry, cherry and violet pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Impressively blends concentration and energy and finishes with impressive, gently tannic persistence.

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

Very spicy and peppery with blue-granite aromas plus hints of grilled and smoked meat. Cloves and nutmeg. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a super spicy finish that almost burns with so much character yet turns fine and focused at the end. A beauty.
RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2018
Sourced from the granitic western portion of the appellation, the 2016 Hermitage La Chapelle features mouthwatering aromas of black olives and charred beef. It’s full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, incredibly lush without being overtly fruity. In fact, it’s largely savory, with elegant shadings of leather and spice on the long, silky finish. Yet despite being delicious now, this still has the granite backbone to age through 2040.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Sep 2019
Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, exotic spices, cured tobacco, olive and potpourri are given vivacity by a smoky mineral nuance. Fresh and expansive in the mouth, displaying deeply concentrated boysenberry and cherry liqueur flavors, along with suggestions of candied violet, star anise and bitter chocolate. The floral and mineral notes return on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which features harmonious tannins and a sweet touch of candied licorice.

Dark fruit here. Attractive blackberry and mocha aromas and a gray, stony mineral thread. Smooth and elegant palate with creamy, rich, berry flavors and a smoky finish. Drink now.

Aged only in concrete, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage la Petite Ruche is a supple, creamy-textured offering that should be consumed over the next 4–5 years for its blueberry and blackberry fruit. Hints of tar and black olive add some savory complexity to this medium to full-bodied wine.

Xavier Vacqueyras 2016 / 750 ml.

2016 / 750 ml.

VN9292 pts. - Vinous - Feb 2020
Deep vivid ruby. Pungent, spice- and mineral-accented red and blue fruit preserve and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of white pepper and garrigue. Silky, penetrating and energetic on the palate, showing impressive depth as well as delineation to the raspberry liqueur, cherry and lavender pastille flavors. Finishes very long and spicy, with harmonious tannins coming in late.
RP9090 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2017
The full-bodied, creamy-textured 2016 Vacqueyras is another solid effort from Xavier Vignon. There’s some peppery spice, ample dark berry fruit, then a nicely dry, savory finish. It should drink well for at least 5 years.

Looking much better than the sample I reviewed last year, the 2016 Cornas Vieilles Fontaines has come into its own. It’s still cedary but also mammothly concentrated in blackberry and plum fruit, all underscored by notes of crushed granite. Full-bodied and muscular, it’s elegant at the same time, with mouthwatering, juicy fruit and softly dusty tannins on the long finish.

Gramercy Cellars John Lewis Syrah

2015 / 750 ml.

JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, May 16, 2018
This has impressive complexity and delivers a soulful interpretation of syrah, offering hard brown spices, peppery notes, red and black fruits and a whole world of aromatic interest. The palate has slippery, sexy tannins in velvety mode carrying graphite and cherry-stone flavors in a seductively layered mode. Drink or hold.

All Les Collines Vineyard from blocks 36 and 46 with 100% whole cluster, the aromas stop you in your tracks, with notes of freshly chopped parsley, cured meat, potpourri, olive, violet and crushed rock. The palate is full of light tart herb and smoked-meat flavors backed by hefty tannins that need a good bit of time to resolve. It brings a sense of freshness and vibrancy, needing significant time in the cellar to be fully appreciated. Best from 2026–2031.
VN92+92+ pts. - Vinous - Oct 2017
Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of black raspberry, blueberry and olive tapenade reminded me of a darker Côte-Rôtie. Then surprisingly tight in the middle but with a faint sweetness to its ripe purple fruit flavors. This is considerably more closed today than the Deuce but may well ultimately surpass that wine.

Blended, but still aging in barrel, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape will likely be bottled in March 2019. Brandied cherries and dried spices mark the nose of this full-bodied, plush wine. It’s slightly warm, and certainly rich, but it remains fresh and long on the finish. It should be a beauty.
JS93+93–94 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, August 29, 2018
Bold and succulent. Ripe, black-fruit aromas with a swathe of spicy-oak and earthy nuances, too. There’s a wealth of plush, brambly, dark-plum and berry flavors in a web of fresh, bright tannins. Barrel sample
SP9393 pts. - Wine Spectator - Nov 15, 2019
Features a core of steeped red and black currant and raspberry fruit, inlaid with singed cedar, mesquite and chestnut accents. Shows a grippy edge on the finish, with strong mineral and tobacco components lingering. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Best from 2021 through 2035. 1,000 cases made, 640 cases imported.
