Pax Sonoma-Hillsides Syrah 2017 / 750 ml.

Item#: 89014

So, let’s get one thing out of the way. The 2017 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is not the 2016. That is not a bad thing, as the 2017 has plenty to offer, and won’t be the subject of rabid speculation. In the glass, the 2017 is richer, sweeter and more immediate than the much darker and more brooding 2016, with a distinct red fruit character. Best of all, it will drink well upon release. All things considered, Pax Mahle turned out a brilliant Syrah in 2017 and my guess is that less extreme vintages will provide an opportunity for him to match the 2016 – which, in my view, remains his best wine ever. Vineyard sites are Walker Vine Hill, Nellessen Vineyard, Castelli-Knight Ranch and Griffin’s Lair.
JD90+90? pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 13, 2018
Reminding me of a san soufre Saint Joseph, the 2017 Syrah Sonoma-Hillsides is all Syrah that was sourced from the Castelli-Knight, Griffins Lair, Walker Viney Hill, and Nellessen Vineyards, saw no destemming, and spent a short ten months in concrete tanks before bottling. This juicy, lively effort offers lots of blue fruits, violets, leafy green herbs, and some leesy notes in a medium to full-bodied, rounded, charming effort that has good acidity. It’s forward and ready to go, and given the wild, slightly natural vibe, I suspect best enjoyed over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Where It's From

District / Sonoma County

View more wines from Sonoma County

Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco is one of California's most famous wine districts. While sometimes overshadowed by the reputation of its rival and neighbor, Napa Valley, Sonoma County has a longer history of viticulture and is twice the size of the former.

Thanks in part to a strong diversity of climates within Sonoma County, the district is home to outstanding examples from a whole host of grapes. Sonoma County Pinot Noirs are considered some of the finest in the state, and the Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels are remarkable. Chardonnays come in a variety of styles thanks to the varying temperatures in Sonoma County, and Cabernets and Merlots also thrive here.

Some of the more celebrated viticultural areas in Sonoma County include Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Carneros (parts of which fall within Napa Valley).

Region / California

When it comes to US wine production, California is King. California wines account for almost 90% of all wines produced in the United States each year, and is home to the most celebrated vineyards and producers in the country. California is probably best known for its world-famous Cabernets and Chardonnays, many of which hail from its two most-acclaimed AVAs, Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Other prominent grapes used in California wines include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel (which California made popular).

Country / United States

The United States now ranks fourth in the world in wine production behind, France, Italy, and Spain. While about 90% of that wine is produced in California, other states like Oregon, New York, and Washington are establishing themselves as prime spots for wine production, as well. Just about any variety of wine can be found in production somewhere in the United States.

Lastly, and all destemmed aged 18 months in roughly 70% new French oak, the 2017 Syrah IX Estate needs to be tasted to be believed. It’s hard to understand how this incredible wine was produced in a vintage like 2017. Revealing a deep purple color as well as a monster bouquet of blackberries, orange blossom, smoked meat, bacon fat, and spring flower, it’s deep, full-bodied, and beautifully pure on the palate, with silky tannins and a singular, exotic character. It’s not easy to find, but unquestionably worth the effort! (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP98+98+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st Oct 2019
Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 IX Syrah Estate opens with the most beautiful nose of crushed black berries, boysenberries, mulberries, chocolate-covered cherries, star anise and red roses with touches of garrigue, mandarin peel and fragrant earth. Medium-bodied, the palate is very firm and elegant with approachably ripe, rounded tannins and layer upon layer of perfumed flavors. It has a long pepper and spice-laced finish. Very impressive!
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Jan 2020
The 2017 Syrah IX Estate is rich and ample on the palate, with tremendous aromatic and flavor intensity. Savory herb, iron, mint, licorice, blood orange and exotic spice infuse the 2017 with tons of character as well as nuance. Inky and sumptuous, with plenty of structural depth, the 2017 hits all the right notes. Like all of the 2017s here, the Syrah needs cellaring. It is such a gorgeous wine.

What a wonderful red with blackberry, clove, dried-meat and tea aromas. Full-bodied, really fine and polished. It caresses your palate. Chocolate, tiramisu and hints of sandalwood. Intensely flavorful. Super syrah. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Red Blend is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, mostly from mountain sites in Napa Valley and about 11% from Knights Valley in Sonoma. Bold and punchy, the 2017 offers an intriguing combination of inky dark fruit and structure. More than that, though, the 2017 offers tons of pure drinking pleasure at a mid-tier price. (Antonio Galloni)
JD9191 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 5/21/2020
The 2017 Bootleg Red Wine checks in as 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that’s mostly from Howell Mountain, yet includes fruit from Spring Mountain, Knights Valley, and Diamond Mountain. Plenty of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, cedary herbs, and a touch of chocolate all emerge from the glass of this plump, rounded, undeniably delicious 2017 that does everything right. Enjoy it over the coming 4–6 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

The 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard is deep, fleshy and super-expressive. Even so, the tannins are just as formidable. Time in the glass lets the dark red fruit slowly open up, while veins of salinity take on greater presence. More than anything else, I admire the marriage of sheer textural intensity and richness with the mineral-driven cut that is such a Duvarita signature. The 2018 is positively stellar.
RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 30th Oct 2020
The 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard has an opaque ruby-purple color and singular aromas of boysenberry and Morello cherry fruit with nuances of violet, lilac, licorice and exotic spices. The palate is full-bodied with concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit, grainy and fresh with a very long, very layered finish. 165 cases were made.
JD93+93+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - August 4, 2020
Also beautiful, the 2017 Syrah Duvarita Vineyard comes from a site just outside the western border of the Sta. Rita Hills. There are 165 cases made and it has pure red, blue, and black fruits, lots of peppery herbs and meaty notes, medium-bodied richness, and a rounded, layered texture. It reminds me of a top Saint-Joseph. Drink it over the coming decade. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Opaque ruby. An assertively scented, complex bouquet features mineral-accented boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice and smoky mineral aromas that expand with air. Stains the palate with sweet, dense black and blue fruit, spicecake and candied violet flavors that show a surprisingly graceful touch thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. Velvety, slow-mounting tannins shape a broad, smoke-laced finish that hangs on with superb, floral-driven persistence.
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
Brooding, concentrated and tannic, the 2015 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Roure will need some time to come out of its granite shell. Crushed stone and dark cherries and cassis emerge only reticently on the nose. For easier near-term drinking, grab some of the Thalabert; for serious longevity in the cellar, the Domaine de Roure will be hard to beat.
JS9393 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Thursday, September 7, 2017
This is all about the granite slopes of Le Blanc up behind Gervas. It has a wild cherry and raspberry nose with dark plums, too, as well as attractive pepper and exotic spices. The palate has a powerful cage of tannins holding dark plum fruits bright and long. This is great Crozes and needs time. Best from 2020 and for a decade at least.

Bright violet. Powerful black and blue fruit preserve, spicecake and incense aromas are lifted and sharpened by a strong, smoky mineral nuance. Stains the palate with concentrated, smoke-tinged boysenberry, cherry liqueur and five-spice flavors that become more energetic with air. Shows suave, seamless texture and finishes extremely long and sappy; chewy tannins build slowly and frame the intense dark fruit.
RP9292 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2017
The 2015 Saint Joseph Domaine de la Croix des Vignes is more tannic than the 2016 but not better. Dry cedary notes frame cherry fruit in the medium to full-bodied wine that will require a couple of years in the cellar to show its best.

The 2018 The Vicar is a beautiful, joyous wine. Punchy and bold in the glass, the Vicar offers tons of immediacy. Juicy red/purplish berry fruit, spice, mocha and lavender are front and center. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain vibrant. In 2018, the Vicar is a real standout.

VN8888 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2018
The 2015 The Hermit (Syrah) tastes very ripe and sweet, which is probably a reflection of an early-ripening vintage with very low yields, as the wine was aged in neutral oak. There is plenty of depth to the inky blue/purplish fruit, but most of the wine’s appeal is upfront, as the intensity tails off on the mid-palate and finish. The 2015 was done with 100% whole clusters. Fruit sources are Castelli-Knight Ranch, Griffin’s Lair, Walker Vine Hill Syrah and Alder Springs Syrah.
