Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Maison Bleue 2019 / 750 ml.

Item#: 96839

RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 13th May 2021
Even richer, darker and more powerful than the 2018 version, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue offers up some lifted, minty notes to accent its potent cassis fruit. Dark, dense, and Port-like without being overly heavy or dense, this full-bodied effort is long, intense and concentrated, with softly dusty tannins on the finish.
JD94+94–96 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
Beautiful cassis, truffle, damp earth, and ground pepper emerge from the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue. Coming from the eastern portion of Hermitage Hill, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a rounded, opulent texture, building tannins, and a great finish. It’s certainly in the same league (and style) as the 2018, and while it’s going to drink nicely at a young age, my money is on it evolving gracefully for 20–25 years. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Plenty of cloves and dried flowers with dark fruit, such as raspberries and blackberries. Some black truffle, too. Full-bodied with baked chocolate-pie and dark-fruit flavors. Full and warm at the end. Big, juicy wine. Give it a few years to come together. Drink from 2023.

Where It's From

Region / Rhone

View more wines from Rhone

Located along the path of the Rhone River, the Rhone wine region in southeastern France is beautiful and very productive. It's typically divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone and Southern Rhone, and the wines produced in these sub-regions are very different from one another.

The southern Rhone is warm and dry, and produces robust, full-flavored red wines, oftentimes blends with Grenache used as the primary grape. Chateauneuf-du-Pape is without question the most celebrated town for wine production in the Southern Rhone region.

Meanwhile, the Northern Rhone features a cooler climate and steep-sloped vineyards. Syrah is the dominant red grape, and the wines are typically tannic, deeply colored, and highly acidic wines (which leads them to get better with age).

Country / France

View more wines from France

The French did not invent winemaking. They simply perfected it. For centuries, France has been producing wines that inspire poetry, awe, and wonder; wines that blur the lines between nature, craftsmanship, cuisine and art. These are the wines that inspired cultures around the globe to follow in France’s footsteps, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Grenache, Merlot, Semillon and more.

Yet as often as they are emulated, the magic of their terroirs can never be duplicated. You may taste Cabernet from around the world, but perhaps none as elegant and regal as Bordeaux. You may try Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from various climates, but none with the earth-bound soul and ethereal reach of Burgundy.

This combines the elegance and finesse for which the appellation is famous with tremendous power. In spite of this the tannins are very fine, the generous oak already beautifully woven into the plush tapestry of flavors. Stunning length and complexity at the finish. From seven plots that are neighbours to La Mouline and La Landonne on the Cote-Rotie. A cuvee of 93% syrah and 7% viognier. Matured in 100% new oak barrels for 38 months. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott)
SP9595 pts. - Wine Spectator - Feb 29, 2024
Fresh and stewed plum flavors have a caressing feel, with bitter chocolate and singed lard chiming in. Orange peel acidity nicely props up the round, weighty palate, while bitter cherry, roasted apple wood and mesquite smoke stretch out on the firm, iron-edged finish. This should have a long life ahead in the cellar. Drink now through 2032. 2,000 cases made, 240 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

The 2019 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is a super example of this cuvée, which blends fruit from seven different lieux-dits (three on the Cote Blonde and four on the Cote Brune). Smoky, herbal and complex, with a solid foundation of blueberry and raspberry fruit, it’s full-bodied and concentrated yet silky, elegant and long on the finish. (Joe Czerwinski)

From the southern part of the appellation and brought up all in used oak, the 2019 Saint Joseph is another ripe, sunny, textured beauty. Red and black fruits, ground pepper, and spice as well as medium-bodied richness and sweet tannins all make for a terrific Saint-Joseph. It will keep for a decade as well. (Jeb Dunnuck)
WE9292 pts. - Wine Enthusiast - 12/1/2023
Fresh aromas of concentrated red fruit framed by licorice and blackberries, followed by a brambly layer fill the glass. Brooding dark fruit generously coats the palate, balanced by its refreshing cut of acidity. Approachable now, but best to cellar well through 2028+ before revisiting. (Anna-Christina Cabrales)

JD9595 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 2/16/2022
The old vine cuvée, the 2019 Saint Joseph Les Grisières sees a slightly longer élevage in barrel. It’s up with the finest wines I’ve tasted from Perret and has classic Saint Joseph earthy, mineral-laced dark fruits as well as ground pepper, leather, and some meatiness. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with gorgeous tannins, it too is ideal for drinking over the coming 10–12 years and will certainly evolve for longer. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP9494 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 20th Jan 2022
Even more concentrated than the 2018 version, Perret’s 2019 Saint Joseph les Grisieres boasts smoky, spicy aromas set against a backdrop of black cherries and black olives to create a complex, savory whole. Full-bodied and plush in feel, with a long, velvety finish and ample richness, it’s nearly approachable now and should still be going strong in 2030.
VN93+93–95 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Ripe, intensely perfumed dark fruit, licorice, olive paste and cracked pepper aromas, along with an exotic pit fruit note that emerges slowly. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering alluringly sweet red and blue fruit, candied violet and spicecake flavors braced by an undercurrent of smoky minerality. Closes extremely long and precise, with repeating floral and mineral qualities and talc-y, slowly mounting tannins. This is shaping up to be a really outstanding wine and one that I’d love to see poured alongside some upper-tier Côte-Rôties.

An assertively perfumed bouquet displays an array of ripe red and blue fruit preserve, floral and spice qualities, along with suggestions of licorice, smoky bacon fat and mineral notes. Effortlessly marries depth and energy and offers sweet cherry, crème de mûre and candied violet flavors sharpened by building mineral and spice flourishes. Shows noteworthy clarity and mineral cut on a long, penetrating finish that echoes the floral and mineral notes with real authority.

This is really packed tight, with a rock-solid core of red and black currant, plum and bitter cherry compote notes, bristling with a singed iron spine and additional pepper and lilac notes along the edges. Coming from a cooler, granite terroir just above Tournon, the 2019 Saint Joseph Vignes De L’Hospice is a serious, age-worthy beauty, and I always find a certain Hermitage-like character in wines from this vineyard. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it has masses of tannins as well as remarkable purity, and ample fruit and concentration. The aromatics lean toward the blue end of the spectrum, but it’s a mineral-laced, peppery, beautiful Saint Joseph in the making. A solid 4–6 years, if not more, of bottle age are recommended. (Jeb Dunnuck)
RP93+93–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 10th Feb 2022
Perennially among the best bottlings from the appellation, the 2019 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice looks set to rival the tremendous effort bottled in 2015. Enticing scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis appear on the nose (it ages in 100% new oak), and while this full-bodied wine packs plenty of power, it also shows characteristic granite-derived restraint, delivering a tense balance between ripeness and structure. It should be a beauty, but give it time, as the tannins are prominent at this early stage of its evolution.

Gently steeped cherry and plum notes form the core in this red, while light floral, white pepper and red licorice accents fill in along the edges. A long, subtle sanguine thread stitches up the savory finish. Best from 2023 through 2033. 1,500 cases made. (James Molesworth)
VN92+92–94 pts. - Vinous - May 2020
Primary black/blue fruit, violet, allspice and olive qualities on the highly perfumed nose, where a smoky mineral nuance adds energetic lift. Sweet, deep-pitched blueberry, cherry and fruitcake flavors spread out steadily in the mouth, picking up spiciness and a touch of licorice on the back half. Finishes with sharp clarity and silky tannins that provide closing shape and grip.

Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow!
JD96+96–98+ pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - 11/19/2020
Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it’s not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making. (Jeb Dunnuck)
JS9595 pts. - JamesSuckling.com - Wednesday, June 2, 2021
A big, rich wine with intense fruit, showing blackberry, black olive and black truffle character. Full-bodied and layered with chewy tannins that are soft and juicy. It’s a little warm on the finish. Yet, the decadence is so attractive and the phenolics keep it in line. This is very solid. Try after 2024.

A modern-styled, powerful red that seduces with rich blackberry ganache, heady cassis and vanilla paste flavors underscored by tobacco and charred cedar. RP9595 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 29th Dec 2013
More dense, concentrated and structured, the knockout 2011 Hermitage La Chapelle, which comes mostly from the warmer, Le Meal lieu-dit, is up with the top 7-8 wines in the vintage. Offering up layers of black raspberry, powdered rock, chocolate, roasted meats and graphite, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, solid mid-palate depth and masses of fine tannin that are sweet and polished. Reasonably approachable given the wealth of fruit and texture, it should nevertheless be given a handful of years in the cellar. It should have 20+ years of total longevity.
WS9494 pts. - Wine & Spirits - February 1, 2014
Now this is Hermitage. From old vines planted in some of Hermitage’s most exalted parcels (Les Bessards, Les Greffieux, Le Méal and Les Rocoules), it’s chewy and ferrous, the gritty tannins holding an animal grip and the bacon-fat scent to go with them. It’s as if fruit is beside the point, a mere vehicle for more important things, like talking about where this comes from. Monumental and real.

RP98+98–100 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 19th Dec 2019
Jaboulet’s 2018 Hermitage La Chapelle features scents of crushed stone, violets and cassis. It’s a classic trio, backed by a wine that’s full-bodied, rich and powerful yet also airy, somehow carrying intense plum and black olive flavors without any sense of heaviness or excess weight. Then the wine finishes long and softly dusty, with tannins that accentuate its savory character, picking up delicious hints of licorice at the very end. The proportion of new oak has been trimmed back to a very reasonable 20% and is hardly noticeable in the wine.
JD97+97–99 pts. - Jeb Dunnuck - December 12, 2019
A deep, powerful, primordial wine (which is exactly what you’d expect for a great vintage of this cuvée), the inky hued 2018 Hermitage La Chapelle offers tons of crème de cassis as well as a liquid rock-like minerality, peppery herbs, burning embers, and graphite aromas and flavors. The palate mirrors the intensity of the bouquet and is full-bodied, concentrated, and tight, yet still packs a huge amount of baby fat. The 2018 is a beautifully pure, balanced, massively endowed La Chapelle that will need a decade of cellaring and keep for 3–4 decades with no problems. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Seems a little shy at the moment, but you can tell that this has serious poise and pedigree with subtle clove, crushed-brick, iron, black-cherry and plum-skin character. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and reserved with super refined tannins that are so fine-textured, yet intense. Give this three or four years to show its true self. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2023.
VN9696 pts. - Vinous - Apr 2020
Opaque ruby. Displays powerful, highly perfumed aromas of black/blue fruit preserves, licorice, cola, baking spices and potpourri, along with an exotic suggestion of incense. Utterly stains the palate with intense blackberry, cherry, cassis, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that deliver a suave blend of weight and energy. Youthfully solid tannins add shape and grip to an extremely long, mineral- and floral-accented finish that shows outstanding clarity and dark fruit thrust.

Bright violet. Powerful black and blue fruit preserve, spicecake and incense aromas are lifted and sharpened by a strong, smoky mineral nuance. Shows suave, seamless texture and finishes extremely long and sappy; chewy tannins build slowly and frame the intense dark fruit.

The 2,000-case 2018 Hermitage Maison Bleue comes from the eastern side of the appellation and is a much more fleshy, opulent wine compared to the more mineral-laced La Chapelle. Jammy blackberry and cassis fruit, notes of ground herbs, graphite, and violets, full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration, and a great finish all make for a compelling Hermitage. It’s going to benefit from 4–5 years of bottle age. (Jeb Dunnuck)

Inky violet color. Deeply pitched cherry, blueberry, licorice and candied violet aromas are complemented by hints of baking spices, incense and smoky minerals. Succulent and penetrating on the palate, offering deeply concentrated black/blue fruit, spice and floral pastille flavors that become more energetic as the wine slowly stretches out. Weighty and broad yet lively as well, finishing with sharp delineation, mounting tannins and outstanding, floral- and mineral-driven persistence.
